Sarah Arnold (nee Atkins)

George William ARNOLD,1,2,3 son of Johann Josef ARNOLD (Jnr) (1826-1893) and Eva Sussanah SCHUPPEL (1831-1918), was born on 17 January 1867 at "Back Creek" in Bombala, NSW.1,4 He was baptised at St Matthias Anglican Church, Parish of Maneroo in Bombala.1 In 1889 he was a labourer in Bombala.5 He was a hotel worker at the Royal Hotel in Pambula, NSW. He worked there with his sister Mary.6 He married Sarah ATKINS on 16 October 1889 at the residence of James Atkins in Maharatta, NSW.1,7,8

between 1890 and 1939 they lived in Pericoe, NSW. They lived a large part of their married life there only ceasing to do so after the 'Black Friday' bushfires. It is known that they lived in a dirt floor house in Pericoe. Prior to coming there, they were at Rocky Hall, Pambula and Towamba.

Between 1895 and 1905 George was a hotellier at the Towamba Hotel in Towamba, NSW. His mother and he ran the hotel for the Martin family. They came to this employment after losing their Big Jack hotel in Rocky Hall when fire destroyed the building. Eva left in 1903 and went to Pericoe but returned again in 1904. Through a series of misfortunes he was compelled to give up the business. According to a newspaper report of the day, he was banqueted and presented with a purse of sovereigns.5,9 Between 1905 and 1939 he was a dairy farmer in Pericoe. working for the Alexander family. Whether he worked for them in this whole period is not known. In 1910 he was awarded the tender to remove the night soil from the cesspits at Towamba School.5

Between 1912 and 1923 his interests included involvement with Pericoe School. In 1912 along with eight other parents, he wrote to the department requesting the removal of the teacher from Pericoe School; during the second week in March 1913, Pericoe School closed due to a whooping cough epidemic. George and John Douch signed the declaration sent to the Department that the closure of the school was warranted; in 1917 he co-signed a petition requesting the Department supply some means of warming Pericoe School; in 1919 the Department approved the removal of the Lett's Creek School building to Pericoe School. George was one of eight parents who offered the Department their services to do the removal free of charge; George co-signed a request submitted to the Department in 1921 requesting a full-time teacher in Pericoe and in 1923 Pericoe School re-opened after being closed for awhile. Records associated with this indicate that George was living one mile from the school.5

Because of the devastation caused by the 'Black Friday' bushfires, they left in 1939 and went to live with other family members at Dapto NSW. Lola Workman, aged four, was present when their house was burnt down and in an interview said "Friday 13, January 1939 was the day more than 1000 homes were lost and seventy people (Sydney Moring Herald) lost their lives in the Victorian bushfires. The SMH screamed 'Black Friday' and the temperatures were recorded at record heats of 116 degrees Fahrenheit. (46.66 degrees Celsius) ......... After a short time in Dapto, George, Joe Arnold and some of the neighbours built a temporary residence again at Pericoe. George never recovered from the loss of his home and life in Pericoe and died a short time later.5

George died (aged 73) on 22 September 1940 in Carlingford, NSW.1,4,11 He was buried in September 1940 in the Field of Mars cemetery in Ryde, NSW.1

George would carry the Pericoe footballers to Towamba in his wagonette (was this what he used to carry the night soil?). Late at night on their way home, they would all jump down and run up the hills then climb aboard and ride down to the foot of the next hill.5
