Ellen Agnes Grady

Thomas Patrick MCNAMARA,1 son of Michael MCNAMARA (1831?-1919) and Mary COMMINS (1837?-1913), was born on 24 June 1872 in Burra, NSW.2,3,4,5 His relationship to Ellen is Maternal Grandfather.

before 1900 Thomas owned property . It was a 40 acre block which he selected. A hut or slab house existed on this block which was east of the later Yarraden homestead and about half way to the top of the range. Whether this was occupied as a permanent residence or only used occasionally to fulfil the residential requirements of the Amended Free Selection Act is unknown.6 In 1900 (estimated) he was a grazier . He took up land with his brother William east of Walkers Flat to the top of the Flagstaff Range. They bought the Kangaroo Ground from the executors of the Dwyer estate along with their purchase of "Hilltop". About 1914 they sold Walkers Flat and the Kangaroo Ground to John McKenzie Davidson.7,8

Thomas married Ellen Agnes GRADY on 14 October 1903 in Tharwa, NSW.9,10,11

As indicated by the birth districts of their children, between 1903 and 1914 they lived at "Hilltop", "The Burra" which was sixteen miles out Queanbeyan in Burra. The property was by nature undulating, seasonably reliable and with ample annual supply of water. A limestone creek ran through the property. They sold "Hilltop" in 1914 to John Kelly and moved to "Cartney" or "Cartref" in The Pilliga where they lived for about four years. Their wheat growing operation on a property of about 2500 acres was successful in the first year but the following three were unsuccessful due to drought and they were eventually forced to leave. In about 1919, they left The Pilliga for Cowra where they had a child, Clarence born in 1917. They then moved on to Orange, NSW at Spring St. which is where they were living when their sons Thomas (1919), Timothy (1922) and daughter Johanna, known as Nelly (1926) were born. They later moved to 49 Shadforth St Lakemba, NSW. They were known to be there by 4 November 1933. They both lived there until their deaths.6,12,13 From 1921 to 1926 he was a stock and station agent in Cowra, NSW. It was his own business and probably was reasonably successful. He continued as a stock and station agent after moving to Orange presumably again in his own business.14,15,16 On 4 November 1933 he was a retired farmer .17 his interests included music. He played the accordian (often referred to by the family as the squeezebox).12

Thomas died (aged 73) on 3 July 1945 at the BDM District in Granville, NSW. He died in a hospital, possibly Auburn Hospital.18,19,20 He was buried in 1945 in Rookwood cemetery in Lidcombe, NSW.15
