James HOLDEN (1845?-1905)

James HOLDEN1 was born in 1845 (approx.) in Ballingarry, Tipperary.1,2,3 James' parents were Thomas HOLDEN and Mary RUSSELL.3,4 James was a farm labourer . He arrived in the Burra district in 1866 and was an employee of Burra Station.5,6

James married Bridget MCNAMARA in 1865 in Queanbeyan, NSW.7

before 1876 they lived at the Lawler residence in Woden, NSW (now ACT). All references to James Holden describe him as a farmer of Burra. It is presumed (although not certain) that these were references to the Lawler house.8

in 1876 he owned property which was a 50-acre lot in Mount Stromlo, ACT. James and Bridget selected it on conditional purchase. Additionally during the 1870s they selected a series of neighbouring lots to the north and east of this land along the creek line including the land selected by Michael McNamara. This led them to having a holding of some six hundred acres. They resided in the area long enough for the creek upon which the home was situated to be named Holden's Creek.5,9

James and Bridget had 5 children :

- Elizabeth HOLDEN (b. c.1866)

- Catherine HOLDEN (b. c.1868)

- William HOLDEN (b. c.1870)

- Patrick HOLDEN (b. c.1872)

- Margaret Ann HOLDEN (b. c.1875).1,5,10

James died (aged 60) on 9 December 1905 in Granville, NSW.11

Bridget MCNAMARA1,12 was the daughter of Bartholomew MCNAMARA (1791?-1856) and Bridget LENEHAN (1788-1873).
