Rosina Caroline POLDEN1 was born in December 1832 in London, Middlesex (pre-1888). She had a twin brother Charles.2 Rosina's parents were Joseph POLDEN (b. England; d. 1870 Mudgee NSW [4624/1870]; baker) and Eliza POLLEY (b. England; d. either 1861 or 1875 Mudgee NSW). They were married on 15 June 1828 in St. Dunstan-in-the-West, London. When Joseph was convicted for receiving stolen money in 1834, the family was living in two rooms at 2 Duke Street, Blackfriars. (Source : Trial data). He was transported on the "Bengal Merchant" in 1835 and received his Certificate of Freedom in 1841. He then received back his money from his Convict Bank Warrant which he presumably used to bring his family out to Australia. They are later recorded as living at 498 Kent Street Sydney (Source : Electoral Roll 1842 - 1843; Phillip Ward).3,4,5 Rosina was baptised on 30 December 1832 at Christ Church in Surrey, England. Charles was also baptised with her.6 She married Samuel HILL in 1850 at the Presbyterian church in Parramatta, NSW.7

on 23 December 1855 they lived at Church St in Parramatta. Some time after that they moved to Mudgee, NSW.8,9

Samuel and Rosina had 6 children :

- Samuel John (b. 23 Dec 1855; V1855 5011 42B / 1855 Unknown); Member of the NSW Permanent Artillery. Served in the Boer War

- George Henry C. (b. 1859; 9924 / 1859 Mudgee NSW)

- Alfred P. (b.1862; 10353 / 1862 Mudgee NSW)

- Unknown Male (deceased by 1864; Possibly not registered)

- Martha Amelia (b. 21 Sep 1864; 1864 / 3218 Fortitude Valley Qld; d.1953)

- Charles W. (b.1867; 13867 / 1867 Parramatta NSW).8,10,11,12,13

Rosina died (aged 85) in 1917 at the BDM District in Petersham, NSW.14

 

Samuel HILL was the son of Samuel HILL (1801?-1888) and Martha HANNAGAN (1807?-1891).

Text From Source: 'Yes Martha Amelia and Alf are children of Sam and Rosina. Martha was my Great Grandmother ("Nan Cole") and I knew her quite well. Lived in Petersham and was always elegantly dressed in black and very thin. She was born in 1864 and died in 1953. Born in Fortitude Valley Qland 21 Sept 1864 when Sam is 33 years and a baker. Rosina also 33. The only numbers on the cert are 1 864 in the left hand corner and F 1572 on the right. It also records that there were two sons living George Henry 5 yrs and Alfred 2 years. In addition 1 son deceased"
