Samuel HILL, son of Samuel HILL (1801?-1888) and Martha HANNAGAN (1807?-1891), was born in 1831 in a place still to be found. (Possibly Parramatta NSW).1 He was a baker .2,3 He married Rosina Caroline POLDEN in 1850 at the Presbyterian church in Parramatta, NSW.4

on 23 December 1855 they lived at Church St in Parramatta. Some time after that they moved to Mudgee, NSW.2,5

Samuel and Rosina had 6 children :

- Samuel John (b. 23 Dec 1855; V1855 5011 42B / 1855 Unknown); Member of the NSW Permanent Artillery. Served in the Boer War

- George Henry C. (b. 1859; 9924 / 1859 Mudgee NSW)

- Alfred P. (b.1862; 10353 / 1862 Mudgee NSW)

- Unknown Male (deceased by 1864; Possibly not registered)

- Martha Amelia (b. 21 Sep 1864; 1864 / 3218 Fortitude Valley Qld; d.1953)

- Charles W. (b.1867; 13867 / 1867 Parramatta NSW).5,6,7,8,9

Samuel died (aged 36) on 6 July 1867 at the BDM District in Coonabarabran, NSW. The cause was injuries sustained by falling from a horse. He was reputed to be taking part in a "gentleman's race".1,10,11 He was buried in 1867 in Mudgee, NSW. The headstone is now in Mudgee Memorial Park.12,13

 

In March 1886, a Samuel Hill licensee of the Vauxhall Hotel in Granville (a suburb adjacent to Parramatta) was fined £5 and costs for supplying liquor to a man against whom a prohibition order had been issued by the Parramatta Bench. Which Samuel Hill this was has not been identified.14

Text From Source: 'Yes Martha Amelia and Alf are children of Sam and Rosina. Martha was my Great Grandmother ("Nan Cole") and I knew her quite well. Lived in Petersham and was always elegantly dressed in black and very thin. She was born in 1864 and died in 1953. Born in Fortitude Valley Qland 21 Sept 1864 when Sam is 33 years and a baker. Rosina also 33. The only numbers on the cert are 1 864 in the left hand corner and F 1572 on the right. It also records that there were two sons living George Henry 5 yrs and Alfred 2 years. In addition 1 son deceased"
