Margaret Ena Mary MCNAMARA1 (known as 'Maggie'), daughter of Thomas Patrick MCNAMARA (1872-1945) and Ellen Agnes GRADY (1883-1958), was born on 24 September 1917 in Cowra, NSW.2,3 She was a follower of the Catholic faith . Maggie maintained a strong attachment to her religion for her entire life. When young, she was a Child of Mary and she maintained a lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary. Maggie was a Catechist for many years and found great pleasure sharing her faith with the children she taught in the State schools in her local area. The Eucharist was very important to her and she was comforted by being able to receive it when the late Margaret Morris brought it from Narraweena Parish when she was still living in her home. Margaret and Tom Colman took her to Mass and brought Communion when she was at Taylor Village in Narrabeen and Judy Pearse brought her the Eucharist from Manly Vale parish. Her daughter Ellen also gave her Communion. In the later years of her life she would say the Rosary with her Sister Nell over the phone while she maintained her interest in the church and parish by reading the local Newsletters and the Catholic Weekly.4

her interests included singing. During the Second World War, she volunteered her singing talents to help raise money for War Bonds. She sang at parties and a number of family weddings including that of her niece Ellen Owen (nee Jones). She sang in the choir of her local church at Narraweena only being forced to stop when deafness overtook her.4,5

her interests included crochet. She was expert at crochet and crocheted her daughter Anne's wedding dress. Embroidery and knitting were also crafts which she enjoyed. She embroidered beautiful doilies and tablecloths.4

her interests included sport. As a young girl she enjoyed playing tennis. She was a supporter of the Western Suburbs Rugby League Club (the 'Magpies'). Along with husband Joe, she played Lawn Bowls at the Forestville RSL Club and won a number of championships. She was a keen follower of the Australian Cricket Team. In later years she was particularly interested in the career of the Australian Captain, Michael Clarke as he had once been her neighbour.4

Maggie married Joseph Maurice KUSHKELLY on 30 January 1943 in Punchbowl, NSW.6

in 1948 (estimated) they lived in Punchbowl. They owned the house. In about 1954 they moved to Frenchs Forest, NSW, a home which they also owned. Maggie continued living there after Joe's death.7

In 2010 (estimated) Maggie resided at Taylor Village in Narrabeen, NSW.4 In January 2012 (estimated) she resided at the Alexander Nursing Home in Brookvale, NSW.4

Ellen's young girl memory is that they were always living at Punchbowl. Given Joe was in New Guinea on WWII duty, possibly Maggie continued to live with her parents after their marriage. It's just not known. Joe would have been eligible for a War Service Home Loan after the war, so this is probably how they financed the home. Therefore 1946 - 1948 is probably a reasonable timeframe for getting the loan approved and then the home built or purchased. Ellen feels she was about 14 years old (1954) when they moved to Frenchs Forest
