John William PARTRIDGE (1835-1884)

John William PARTRIDGE,1,2 son of Stephen PARTRIDGE (1793-1878) and Julia COTTERDOWN (1812?-1889), was born on 17 April 1835 in Port Macquarie, NSW.1,2,3,4 He was baptised on 8 May 1835 at St Thomas Church of England in Port Macquarie.4 He was a stockholder and labourer .4 He married Susannah HAYWARD on 12 December 1855 at St Thomas Church of England in Port Macquarie.5,6

John and Susannah had 6 children :

- Rebecca S PARTRIDGE (b.1857 Port Macquarie NSW)

- Ellen M PARTRIDGE (b.1859 Port Macquarie NSW)

- Julia S PARTRIDGE (b.1862 Port Macquarie NSW)

- Charles E PARTRIDGE (b.1864 Port Macquarie NSW)

- John W PARTRIDGE (b.1868 Port Macquarie NSW)

- Margaret Mary Ann PARTRIDGE (b. 12 Aug 1871 Bridge St Port Macquarie; d. 4 Apr 1872 Aged 8 Months; bur. 5 Apr 1872 from St Thomas' Church by Rev KEMP). The Cause of Death was Enteritis and exhaustion.7,8

John died (aged 49) on 13 September 1884 in Port Macquarie.1,2,4 He was buried on 14 September 1884 in Port Macquarie. The ceremony was held at St Thomas Church of England, conducted by J C McINTYRE, Reader for the Church of England.4

A petition requesting formal recognition of The Historic Cemetery in Port Macquarie was worded as follows :

To The Surveyor-General

Sir,

We the undersigned Heads of Families and Members of the Church of England, residing in and around the Township of Port Macquarie beg to state that: We have never found the Burying Ground adjacent to the town, and known as the Church of England Burying Ground in any way objectionable; and further beg that it may be alienated for the purposes for which it is at present allowed, that so it may be preserved from the desecration which has befallen other unalienated Burying Grounds in the Colony

We are Sir your Obedient Servants

It was signed by 85 individuals including Stephen Partridge; Julia Partridge; John W Partridge; Susannah Partridge.9
