John Thomas Michael MCNAMARA (1905-1982)

John Thomas Michael MCNAMARA¹ (known as 'Jack'), son of Thomas Patrick MCNAMARA (1872-1945) and Ellen Agnes GRADY (1883-1958), was born on 2 September 1905 in Queanbeyan, NSW.^2,3 He was described as 5 ft 11 ins tall, medium complexion with brown eyes and hair with no marks or scars . This was when he enlisted.⁴

between 10 June 1942 and 19 February 1946 when aged 36-40 he served in World War II in the 19th Australian Army Ordinance Depot. He enlisted at Paddington NSW. He saw service on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. His service number was NX96689 and he attained the rank of Private.⁵

his interests included music. He played the violin (generally referred to as "the fiddle" by both himself and the family).⁶ his interests included writing. Jack loved to write and he has left a large collection of manuscripts all of which may be found in his Biography pages.⁷

Jack married Marjorie EDENS in 1950 at the BDM District in Paddington, NSW.^8,9 He married Mona RYAN. Mona had previously been married and her name at the time of her marriage to Jack was Mona GEALE. She and Jack were cousins in that Jack's mother (Ellen GRADY) was a first cousin to Barney RYAN who it is believed was Mona's father.⁹

they lived in Yagoona, NSW. They later moved to 31 Hansens Road, East Minto, NSW 2566.¹⁰

Jack and Mona didn't have any children.⁶

Jack died (aged 76) on 29 January 1982 at Calvary Hospital in Kogarah, NSW. A death notice was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 2 February 1982.^9,11,12 He was buried on 4 February 1982 in Section 8, No. 0322 in Woronora cemetery in Sutherland, NSW.^13,14
