Jonathan ASQUITH (1808-1869)

Jonathan ASQUITH1 was born in 1808 in Leeds, Yorkshire.2 Jonathon's parents were John ASQUITH and Martha LUND who were married in 1791 at Kildwick, North Yorksire, England.2 Jonathan was convicted on 28 July 1827 at York Assizes in York, Yorkshire. He was sentenced to life.3,4

he migrated from UK to Port Jackson Sydney, NSW arriving on 19 November 1827. He travelled on the Convict ship "Asia" which departed on 13th August, 1827.4

Jonathan married Susannah WILLIAMS on 19 October 1839 at Cooks River in Petersham, NSW. Given her first husband didn't die until 1862, was this a bigamous marriage or was it was viewed as a "poor man's divorce" *.2,5,6

Jonathon also married Mary Ann NELSON on 6 Jun 1846, daughter of William Lunn NELSON and Elizabeth DAY (b.1827 Leeds, Yorkshire). They had 11 children.2

Jonathon and Susannah had 1 child :

- Joseph ASQUITH (b. 8 Jun 1837 Botany NSW; chr.1837 C of E Petersham; d. 4 Jan 1912 Little Bay NSW). He married Mary Ann WRIGHT (nee MARSHALENA) on 7 January 1886 in the Congretational Church Surry Hills NSW, daughter of Louis MARCELIN and Eliza FIGARO both from Port Louis, Mauritius. (Name variations are Mashal, Marshall, Marcelin and Marshalena).2,7,8,9

Jonathan died (aged 61) on 25 August 1869 in Stockton, NSW.2

 

* a "poor man's divorce" is sometimes regarded as happening when no contact occurs between the parties for seven years. It probably has no standing in law but authorities have often turned a blind-eye, especially in earlier times.

 

Susannah WILLIAMS5 was the daughter of James WILLIAMS (1760?-1820) and Rachael WATKINS (1760?-1840).
