Joseph PARTRIDGE (1823-1898)

Joseph PARTRIDGE,1 son of Stephen PARTRIDGE (1793-1878) and Sarah WILLIAMS (1796-1830), was born on 2 September 1823 in Port Macquarie, NSW.1,2,3 He was baptised on 2 May 1824 in Port Macquarie. Joseph's Baptism was the first Baptism performed at the public schoolhouse in St Thomas Church of England by the Reverend Thomas Hassell.4,5 Between 1 October 1828 and 31 December 1828 he was educated at St Thomas' Church of England building in Port Macquarie. He was listed as a pupil of the "Early School" conducted there for the quarter ending 31 December 1828.6 In 1839 he was a wheelwright apprentice in Port Macquarie.7 In 1839 at Port Macquarie, NSW, he was a witness giving evidence into the death of Sarah NOAKES. Joseph Partridge being sworn states, "I am apprenticed to Mr Noakes, Wheelwright and reside in his house. Yesterday and the day before the deceased was drunk all day. She had been drinking spirits. At five o'clock yesterday evening when the witness, Mrs Jordan came to Mrs Noakes' , the deceased was sitting on a box in her bedroom and was so drunk that she could hardly walk into the next room to shake hands with Mrs Jordan. I then went to my father's house and did not return until about eight o'clock. Mr Noakes was then standing at the door, and we stood talking there for some time and about 10 o'clock I went to bed. Mrs Jordan came in after I was in bed and Noakes went to bed about half past 10 o'clock. Noakes and his wife had not been quarrelling, they occasionally had words, but I never knew him to strike her . The deceased was an habitual drunkard and about a week ago she fell against the corner of the table, whilst drunk and gave herself a black eye. Noakes occasionally gets drunk but he is a very quiet man".

Signed: Henry Graham Port Macquarie - 26 September 1839

VERDICT : We are of the opinion that the deceased died from an excessive use of ardent spirits.

Text From Source: "Josepn Thomas Partridge was the third son of Joseph and Jane (nee Macintosh). He was born at "Waterloo", via Walcha, on 1st May, 1856. He was baptised by Rev. John Morison who was New Englands first Presbyterian minister. Rev. Morison was based at Armidale with his parish extending from The Darling Downs to the Liverpool Plains. Thomas was probably baptised at "Waterloo" as Rev. Morison visited properties where Presbyterian families lived."
