George BOLAND was born in 1848 in Armagh, Cavan in Ireland.1,2 George's parents were George BOLAND (b. c.1798 Grange, Armagh, Ireland; d. 2 Jan 1877 Durran Durra NSW) and Sarah HUTCHISON (b.1809 Armagh, Ireland).3

George migrated from Ireland to Sydney, NSW arriving on 30 December 1858. When only ten years old, George travelled to Australia with his fourteen old brother William on the "Admiral Lyons" as a single male, not being a member of a family. The ship departed on 25 Sep 1858.4 On 3 November 1870 he was a gold miner . Additionally he was a drover, taking cattle to the coast (possibly to Nowra) on round trips that could take up to six months.5,6 He married Janet Ellen GEGG (Snr) on 3 November 1870 in Sod Hut (near Braidwood), NSW.7,8

At the time of their marriage on 3 November 1870 they lived in Sod Hut near Braidwood, NSW. He was a miner there. While George was droving, they lived at Durran Durra, NSW. At some unknown time, they moved to Braidwood where they owned The Willow Tree Inn at Braidwood. After retirement they lived at Croydon Park, NSW.5,9 After 1870 he was an innkeeper at The Willow Tree Inn in Braidwood, NSW.10 On 7 April 1903 he was a cab proprietor . (Cab is a short-hand word for Taxi).11

he died (aged 75) on 15 November 1923 at the BDM District in Burwood, NSW.12,13 He was buried in November 1923 in St. Thomas Church of England Cemetery, Section 46, Plot 5 in Enfield, NSW.13

Researcher Helen SUTTON says "The most prominent story though involved George as a drover, taking cattle to the coast - Nowra I think - on round trips that could take up to six months. They lived at that time at Durran Durra (as I remember the story) in a dwelling with newspapers pasted to the inside walls to stop the cold coming through the cracks. ...... a graphic description of a belting my grandfather had received from George as a little fellow of about six or seven. He had spooked his father's horse as he was leaving home on one of these droving trips. George didn't have time to administer the punishment then but didn't forget and carried it out very thoroughly as soon as he returned six months later. My grandfather, Jim, was seventy when I was born and told me this story often and well into his eighties. Perhaps it was a cautionary tale for a little girl to induce her to be good but I think he still thought it was 'a bit tough' all those years later".9
