Between 1951 and 1964, Ted ran a contract dry cleaning business, which was known as 'Chic Dry Cleaners'. He used to call at people's homes, collect the garments and take them to a factory run by Don Goldfinch where they were drycleaned. Ted was charged a fixed price for articles and set his own price to the customer. He had to stop this after he had his heart attacks. These photos show Ted in the first van he had for the business and one of his Price Lists c.1955.
Prior to this business he had done a similar thing with a fruit and vegetable run. He used to go to the Sydney markets at Ultimo to purchase his stock and he had a tabletop-top truck which he used to use.
In both businesses, Betty Owen often went out canvassing, cold calling at homes to try to get customers.
