Zealandia
Ship: 1116 tons
Captain: G Sellar
Surgeon Superintendent: Dr Tye
Sailed London, Gravesend July 10th 1874 - arrived Auckland 15th October 1874

The Zealandia, a fine iron clipper-built ship of 1116 tons, was built for the Shaw, Savill Co, in 1869 ande made her maiden voyage to Lytteton. The Zealandia was a beautiful ship, specially designed for carrying passengers. Her saloon was spacious and lofty. and the cabins were unusually large and well ventilated, having extra large portholes to them. The decoration of the saloon was extremely chaste. She had some special cabins for families, and a ladies saloon. The second cabin was on deck and the berths were larger then usual and well lighted. The Zealandia, after completing 31 voyages to New Zealand, was sold to the Russians. She was stranded in 1911, and sold to a firm in Nova Scotia.
White Wings - Sir Henry Brett

WATSON family:
William Watson, a farmer of the Artikelly Parish of Aghanloo, County Londonderry, Ireland, married Mary Toner of the Sconce Parish of Dunboe County, Londonderry, Ireland, in 1856. In 1874 William and Mary together with their children Annie Jane, John, Alexander, Eliza, Matilda, James, Sarah, William and Mary emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand sailing on the "Zealandia". The family was accompanied by an unmarried aunt Martha Watson. Unfortunately the youngest child, Mary, died during the voyage. An earlier born child also named Mary had died in 1865. The Watson's first settled in Auckland and William and Mary lived in Chapel Street (now Federal Street) for many years and it was there that the last born child George was born. In later life William and Mary moved to the Tairua, Coromandel area where they spent their last years..
Of the children
Annie Jane married John PATTON at Auckland in 1880
John married Charlotte Ellen WILTON at Masterton in 1987
Alexander married Mary Ann VICKERS at Auckland in 1896
Eliza married Sigvard Jacob DANNEFORD at Auckland in 1879
Matilda married William Henry LAYCOCK at Auckland in 1895

Sarah married Robert BARKER at Onehunga, Auckland in 1893

With the exception of John and Charlotte Ellen who lived in the Tinui/Masterton area and Eliza and Sigvard who lived in the Ponsonby, Auckland area, the rest of the family resided at one time or another in the Tairua, Coromandel area. If you have a connection with this family or can offer information please e-mail Colin Watson
