The following note was written alongside the entry for Margaret and Jesse Burgess

The conditions on which this family should be sent out were settled before the receipt of the directions to give free passage to single women. The cash amount received covers the cost of Mrs Burgess passage £14-0-0 and that of her son £8-10-0. The promisory notes were taken as had been arranged but they are of little value being signed only by women and under the circumstances the Govt. will not, I imagine, claim on them.
