MCLEAN family:
Of the family of Murdoch & Isabella McLEAN of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, all except one sister ( Sarah who married Donald CAMPBELL) came to New Zealand on the barque Ellen Lewis. All of the sons had learned the trade of Shipbuilding.  Unlike others on board, the McLeans were not to join other settlers at Waipu. Angus & Donald  worked as Shipwrights. Donald settled in Devonport. John first settled on a farm in the Papakura Valley but returned to Auckland and eventually set up the Contracting Firm of John McLEAN & Sons. Both of the sisters settled in Mercury Bay. Mary & Husband Hector McKAY on as farmers at (Gum Town) Coroglen and Catherine with husband Thomas Carina, lived at Whitianga. Further children born to Donald & Isabella at Devonport, New Zealand were Donald (m Jessie Young), Neil (m Flora Jamieson McLean), Catherine (m Mr Rowles), Sarah (m Mr Guthrie), Christina (m George Arthur Fisk), Mary (m James N Fisk) and Jessie Ann (did not marry). Further children born to John & Mary in New Zealand were Glenallan, Flora, Catherine, Ann and Flora. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Christine Madsen.
