The Canterbury, a beautiful clipper ship of 1242 tons, built in 1874 for Parick Henderson by Robert Duncan, sailed the seas for many years, and during the seventies and eighties brought thousands of immigrants to New Zealand. She was one of the fastest sailors and most comftable ship afloat, and made some remarkable runs both out and home.

HARVEY family:
William Harvey was born in Bannockburn, Stirling in Scotland in 1847. On April 26th 1867 he married Grace Robertson in Dundee. Before leaving Scotland they had 4 children: Mary born June 4th 1867 - died July 6th 1867 of catarrhal influenza, Sylvester born 04-06-1867 - died June 21st 1867 of infantile debility, Mary born November 20th 1870 - died September 20th 1872 of typhoid fever and William born March 3rd 1874. William was the only child to travel with them to New Zealand. After they arrived they lived in Christchurch where a further two children were born: Sylvester Miller born June 13th 1878 and Alexander Miller (Phil Harvey's Grandfather) born February 14th 1881.
