ARRIVAL OF THE DUKE OF ATHOL

The fine iron ship Duke of Athol, Captain C Elliott, from London, arrived in our harbour at 10 o'clock this morning, after a passage of 87 days from the Lizard. This is her first visit to Wellington, and she comes under charter to the N Z Shipping Company. Previously her trading was from London to Sydney and Melbourne. The passage out has been an uneventful one, and the passengers have all arrived in good health. The chief officer has suppled the following dates:- Left the Downs on the 31st October and the Lizard on 1st November; unsettled weather and heavy S E gales were experienced between 31 deg and 24 deg N; the Equator was crossed on the 27th day out; passed Tristan D'Achuna on 13th December, and Cape of Good Hope on the 25th; came south about, sighted the Snares on the 22nd instant, had northerly winds up the coast, and was boarded by Pilot Holmes this morning, who anchored her in the powder ground as stated above.
