William was the child of his parents' middle age. On Feb. 9 1864, at the age of 19 he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He enlisted at Newton, AL to serve with Co. F, !st Battalion Alabama Artillery for the rest of the war. He was sent to Fort Morgan, AL on the East side of Mobile Bay and gived the task of being the orderly for General Page who commanded the Fort. He hadn't been there long before he caught the measles and spent almost the whole month of March in the Post Hospital.
It seems that William had fractured his right arm before his enlistment and it had deteriorated so badly that he could not perform his duties. On 13 Aug. 1864, he was given a discharge for medical reasons. On 16 Aug 1864 he was paid for his services in the amount of $120.16, minus $24.93 for clothing, for a total amount of $95.23 for the six months he served.
William came home from the war and married Jane the dau. of Jesse A. Peacock and Martha Lewis.
William is buried Asbury UMC cemetery, Dale Co., AL
