JULIUS BETTERS SUCCUMBS HERE - Pioneer Resident of City Died Sunday Noon; Rites Wednesday

Julius E. Betters, 86, Marinette pioneer, died sunday noon at M & M hospital.  He had been ill a week, death resulting from infirmities incident to age. A survivor of the Peshtigo fire, he resided in this city for 70 years.  For the last three years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Levy Cahee, 1721 Lewis street.  He was employed as a saw filer for many years here during the early lumbering days for the Ludington company.  He was born July 7, 1853 in New York. Survivors are three sons, William of Porthmouth, Va., and Charles and George of Marinette, four daughters, Mrs. Lillian D'Armour of Iron Mountain; Mrs. Warren Russel of Port Ludlow, Wash. and Mrs. William Weber and Mrs. Cahee of this city, 31 grandchildren and 2? great grandchildren. The body was taken to McLain funeral home where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 8"30 and at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's church.  The Rev. Omer Champagne will officiate at the requiem mass.  The casket will be placed in Forest Home cemetery mausoleum.  The deceased was a charter member of Catholic Knights of Wisconsin.

Pioneer Resident of Marinette Succumbs Last Night in Hospital Mrs. Julius Betters, 72, Pioneer resident of Marinette, passes away last night at 11:45 o'clock in the M. and M. hospital. Mrs. Betters had been ill six weeks with a heart ailment. The deceased was born in New York State, and would have been 73 years of age the first of January. Mary Rondeau married Julius Betters, August 6th, 1880. Six years ago she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Betters is a daughter of John Rondeau of this city. Besides her husband and father she is survived by the following children: William of Portsmouth, VA.; Mrs. Lillian D'Amoure, Iron Mountain, MI.; Mrs. Warren Russell , Northport, Wash.; and Charles, George, Mrs. William Webber and Mrs. Levi Kabie, this city. Two brothers, Arthur, Minneapolis, Minn.; and John Rondeau, Duluth, Minn.; one sister Mrs. Lillian Kelly, Duluth Minn.; 32 grandchildren also survive. The remains were taken to the McLain Funeral Home and will be returned to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Webber, 1003 Oakes street, Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the house and at 9 o'clock at the St. Joseph's church. The Rev. Omer Champagne will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Mrs. Charles Betters, 75, life-long resident of Marinette who lived at 315 Bay View St., died at 5:45 a.m. today in Marinette General Hospital where she had been a patient since September 18. Death followed an illness of a year. The former Mayme Gamlin was born in this city October 8, 1887. She married Mr. Betters October 4, 1910, in St. Joseph's Church. The late Father Corry officiated. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in October 1960. Surviving with her husband are a son, Mervin of Chicago, and three daughters, Mrs. Andrew Penl and Mrs. Henry Keller of Marinette and Mrs. Harold Fritz of Peshtigo. Also surviving are five brothers and a sister, all of Marinette. They are Albert, George, Louis, Myron, and William Gamlin and Florence Belanger. There are 26 grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Joseph St. Peter, died a mouth ago. Services will be conducted Thursday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Omer J. Champagne will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the Zeiler funeral home after 4 p.m., Wednesday. The rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The former Lucille Betters was born here Jan. 28, 1911, and was a lifelong Marinette resident. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was married to Henry Keller Oct. 17, 1929, in Marinette. He died in November 1974. Surviving are six sons, Henry W., Dennis, Gerald, James, Roger and Kenneth, all of Marinette; seven daughters, Mrs. Roy Chevalier and Mrs. Lester Pesola of Marinette, Mrs. James Haas of Mount Prospect, Ill., Mrs. Jerome Nesbitt, Mrs. Sam Smith and Mrs. Clarence Pichette of Menominee and Mrs. Allen Ebner of Long Prairie, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Fritz of Peshtigo and Mrs. Alice Penl of Marinette, 44 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Harold William Fritz, 81, of 156 N. Wood Avenue, Peshtigo, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at his home after a long courageous 7 1/2 year battle with cancer. He was born on October 20, 1922, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emil F. (Christine Malke) Fritz. He graduated from Ripon College and on January 05, 1944, he married the former Mary "Elizabeth" Betters. Harold worked at Badger Paper Mill for 44 years except for the three years of service in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, was an alderman for 17 years and served on many different committees on the Peshtigo City Council. He was an avid Packer fan, enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and camping, spent many years camping with family and friends and spending winters in Arizona. Harold is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Elizabeth; his children: Dennis (Markie) of Green Bay, Marlene (Frank) Bienat of Rice Lake, Michael (Diane) of Peshtigo,and Lynette (Joseph) Brosig of Marinette; grandchildren: Scott, Jeff, and Greg Fritz, Nicole and Kimberly Biernat, Melissa and Ben Fritz, and Alison, Heather, Ashley, and Joey Brosig; eight great-grandchildren, along with two step-great-grandchildren; brothers: Omar, Roy and Emil; and one sister, Vivian Bertrand. He was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva Baldwin; and one brother, Clarence. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Berth and Rosenthal Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. The Badger Retirees will pay their respects at 11:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Peshtigo. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo.

MRS. CAHEE DIES MONDAY NIGHT

Mrs. Levi Cahee, 62, died Monday at 10:20 p.m. in Marinette General Hospital where she was admitted earlier in the day. Death followed an illness of 15 months. The former Myrtle Better was born in Marinette Feb. 8, 1899. With the exception of a short time spend in Kenosha, Escanaba and Goodman, she had lived here most of her life. She married Mr. Cahee at Kenosha on Oct. 14, 1919. Surviving with her husband are one son, William; four daughters, Mrs. LeRoy Mason, Mrs. William Bero, Mrs. George Benoit, and Mrs. Dean Hipke; one brother, Charles Better; two sisters, Mrs. Warren Russell and Mrs. William Weber; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Very Rev. Omer Champagne will be celebrant of the 9 a.m. requiem mass Thursday in St. Joseph's church. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the McLain-Thielen-Langer funeral home from 2 p.m. Wednesday until 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The parish vigil will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
