Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), pp. 673-74:
"HARROD LEONARD, farmer and stock-raiser, Long Creek Township, resides on section 23, where he owns 120 acres of land. He also owns forty acres on section 27, same township. He was born in Morrison County, Indiana, June 29, 1827, son of Henry and Martha (Raynor) Leonard, natives of North Carolina. He assisted his father on the farm until he was nineteen years of age, and in 1848 accompanied him to Iowa. He settled in Fairfield, Jefferson County, where he remained three years, then removed to Wapello County, and thence, in 1866, to Decatur County. In 1851 he was married, in Wapello County, to Mahala Thompson, born in Illinois, in 1833. They have seven children -- Elmira, a widow; Catherine, wife of A. G. Spencer; James, living in Nebraska; Mary A., wife of David Polins; Eliza, wife of Jefferson West, of Nebraska; William, living also in Nebraska, and Freddie, at home. Mr. Leonard commenced with very little means, and when he was married he was $75 in debt. He rented land at first, and by hard work and good management, assisted by his excellent wife, he saved enough in four years to purchase a home. He has assisted in giving all of his married children a good start in life. His land is in a good state of cultivation, and he has a pleasant home. He is honest, upright, energetic and hospitable, and is very popular with his neighbors. He has been a member of the School Board fifteen years. He is a member of the Christian church, and politically is an ardent Republication. Postoffice, Grand River."

DIED--At Van Wert, October l0th, of cancer of the stomach, MRS. ELVIRA
GOULD, aged 42 years.
The subject of this sketch was born in Wapello County. She is a
daughter of HARROD and MAHALA LEONARD. The family moved to Decatur
County in l865 and settled one and one half miles southwest of Van Wert.
MRS. GOULD was twice married. DANIEL WEST, by whom she had two sons,
died several years ago in Kansas. Her present husband, NEWTON GOULD, by
whom she had one son, together with her three sons, remain to mourn her
loss.
Sister GOULD joined the Christian Church and was baptized in that faith
about twenty years ago, and has lived an exemplary life ever since.
Some two or three days before her death, she told the writer she wanted
him and all her friends to know that all was right between herself and
God. Thus, she passed away in perfect peace. Funeral services were
held next day in the Christian Church by the writer, assisted by REVS.
J. BLAIR and B.F. BROWN. We hope to meet her in a better land.

It is said by some family members that Uncle Ed had been married, had a child and that both died and he never remarried. I have no proof of this and cannot find any proof.
He left home after the death of his parents and roamed around the country and has been linked with being a companion to a famous author. I have researched that possibility and have found all those rumors to be false, and many others that have been said about him. He was either too young to have been involved (infant as well as him not being born yet, ie civil war) or way too old to have been involved.
I am looking into another relative of our Leonards that all these tales could be alluded to, but so far have found nothing to relate to any of these tales.
In any case, I have found all these rumors completely unfounded due to time frames and circumstances.

Life's labor done, so sinks the clay
Light from the load the spirit flies,
While heaven and earth combine to say
Now blest the righteous when he dies
