Well, we know that there has to be another Henry Leonard, Jr out there somewhere, because Capt Henry died in 1770, making his son, Henry Jr, a Sr, so where is Henry Jr? At least we have found another child of Henry b. 1755-59, d. 1803!

*More about Capt. Henry Leonard.

He was in the French and Indian war and was captured in 1755 at
North River(around the Holstein River)and escaped.

Augusta Co., VA., In the list of new recruits for Capt. John West;
Henry Leonard enlisted May 29, 1754. He was at "Wills Creek" July
1754 and was in the "Battle of the Meadows" 1754.

Let me add also, that the following Leonards were in Augusta Co, VA,
in the "French and Indian War"; John, Jacob and Adam Leonard.
They could all be brothers or cousins to Capt. Henry Leonard.
We are pursuing this to be.

Generation  10

**Jacob Leonard b. 1763 .,

Children of Jacob and Rebecca

(In our family genealogy written by our Uncle Edward Alfred
Leonard he states that when his grandfather Henry Leonard
migrated to Indiana, he left 3 brothers in North Carolina.
He did not mention anything about his sisters,
but there were six (as the census shows.) I will be attempting to
name these females, but cannot be sure where in birth order they
will actually be. Please bear with me on this.

1790 ROWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA FEDERAL CENSUS

1 female 10-16..(Elizabeth?)
1 female 10-16..(Rebecca?)
1 female 26-45.. (Rebecca, mother age abt. 32)

Jacob Leonard (what happened to Jacob?)

James Leonard We now believe he went to Indiana with Henry and is enumerated 1830.
1830 Lawrence Co, Ind
1 male 0-5
2 males 5-10
1 male 30-40
1 female 0-5
1 female 5-10
1 female 10-15
1 female 30-40

There is NO 1820 Randolph Co, N.C. Census. We did however obtain a 1820 Tax list and James and Henry are both gone.

We believe that Jacob and Rebecca were married abt. 1784/85 and that
Elizabeth, Rebecca and Phebe were b. before 1790,
Henry was b. 1789, James was b. abt 1794, Joseph was b. 1799
Nancy b. abt. 1804 and Mahala b. abt. 1807.
We are still missing a male child and will continue searching for
him.

I found Jacob and Rebecca as man and wife in 1786 in Chatham Co.
N.C. witnessing a deed between William and John Brewer.

Another question that has arisin lately, is why did the Quakers wait
so many years to "disown" Rebecca Graves for marrying out of unity?
I cannot answer that question and do not know who or where to seek
for an answer.

Jacob bought his first land in Randolph Co., N.C. in 1797.

The following are possibilities. We cannot prove nor dis-prove or
dis-allow these marriages as our kin in Randolph & Rowan Co., N.C.

*Elizabeth Leonard m. Henry Misamer, May 3, 1819
*Rebecca Leonard m. Fredrick Sullivan, Feb. 7, (or 24), 1815

d. abt. 1837 in Spartansburg, S.C.
m. Sarah Lanford 1771-1855.

**Notes for Henry Leonard researchers;
The name "Henry LEONARD has been handed down over the generations.
We know our grgrandfather was named "HENRY". In turn, we find
"HENRY LEONARD" in every generation and in every branch,
with every sibling that we have been able to find. My father
was "William HENRY", my brother was William "HENRY". The name
"HENRY" has died here as more modern names took over.
My father had twin brothers that died at birth, and one they named
John, but the other they named "HENRY"!
This was not just coincidence, and one must allow all premeditation
and and purpose of our ancestors into research as well.

Excerpt from "The New Jersey Leonards"
Quote...."Thomas Leonard of "John and Elizabeth" b. Mass. and d.
1759 N.J. having no heirs willed his property to his nephews,
Children of his deceased brothers Henry, John and James Leonard. He
also named Samuel, Sarah & Ann Leonards, his living siblings.

The will written on paper 91/2 inches by 14 inches is 12 pages long
and very complicated. Henry Leonard, brother to deceased brother
Thomas, had sons Samuel, Thomas and Captain Henry Leonard, who had
son Henry Leonard (this Henry Leonard d. 1803) named in his will and
daughter, Sarah Leonard. It is this Captain Henry Leonard that this
writer is most interested in as the information so far found seems
to point to him as being the ancestor of the North Carolina Leonard
Family.

On page 1 of this will is found this item: Item; I give and
bequeath "unto my nephew Captain Henry Leonard, son of my deceased
brother Henry Leonard, all my right Title property claims and
Demands whatsoever both in law and equity unto all the Indian
Purchases of a tract of land being and lying between Squann River
and Metetieunk containing about 10,000 acres which tract of land
I now hold by virtue of a deed from Samuel Leonard, brotherof the
Captain Henry Leonard and to his heirs and assigns forever. And also
I give unto my said nephew, Captain Henry Leonard a certain house
and lot of land lying and being (in Kinston not clear) whereon
Benjamin Maple (now resides not clear)-----part of the 2 lines at
the bottom of the page is covered with tape to protect it from
wearand is not readable---but, there is a town named Kinston in
Lenoir CO, N.C.--early records of Kinston and area are said to have
been destroyed.

In the next item of his will, Thomas gives "To my nephew John
Leonard, son of my late brother John Leonard, deceased, ...All that
tract of land on the Northwest branch of Cape Fear River Containing
640 acresnear a place called Brampton with all
singular, etc.

Thomas does not name the colony, but Cape Fear River is definitly in
the present state of N.C., which leads the writer to believe
the "10,000 acres of Indian Land willed to Captain Henry Leonard
Nephew, is also in N.C. Possibly lying Northeast of of the 640
acres on Cape Fear River as Kinston is in the present county of
Lenoir. Thomas also willed Henry Leonard,(died 1803) son of Captain
Henry Leonard, 10 pounds.

John and William Hampton lived on Dutch Second Creek near the
Leonards, Linns and Fulenwiders--all lived near St. Peters Church,
also not far from Salisbury and the Organ Church, as deed records
and tax lists clearly show. In a letter dated 8/1/1957, William D.
Kissiah, genealogist who did research on these families and who has
lived in this area all his life stated;
......"There were no other Leonard families in East Rowan who could
have been "Elinor Leonards" parents and they lived there in a little
group at St Peters Church, so the evidence is good, although not
documentary"......End of quote.
SO, we feel the same way about the parents of our Jacob Leonard b.
1763 in VA, that they are all the one and the same Leonards!!!

There is more to this book. It is available on Microfische from
your local LDS (FHC) Library for a ridiculiously low
price.

Recently found the following in a book at our library:
John Leonard Rowan County, N.C 1768 Taxpayer
Joseph Leonard Rowan County, N.C. 1768 Taxpayer
It would appear to me as though these would be Capt. Henry Leonards brothers or cousins.
