Michael Hoffman & Anna Maria Nimsgern

Michael Hoffman was the son of Peter Hoffman and Susan Blenser. He came to America with his parents from Coblenz, Rhine Province, Germany in 1842. His father purchased land and the family settled in Niles Tws., Cook Co., IL. Michael's father Peter passed away in 1846. In 1850, Michael went west to California during the gold rush craze where he remained until 1856 before returning to Niles Tws. On 11 Feb 1858, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, IL, Michael married Anna Maria Nimsgern, daughter of Johann and Susanna Nimsgern. Michael and Anna made their home in Des Plaines, IL. They had six children, two daughters and four sons. Besides being one of the areas most prosperous farmers, Michael was also active in local public affairs. He held the office of highway commisioner for twenty four years, 1867-1891, and the office of assessor for over thirty years, 1866-1896. Michael and Anna's son Peter Michael, was Cook County Coroner from 1904-1923 and Cook County Sheriff from 1923-1928.
