Johann Bernard Kernebeck

Johann Bernard and Bernard Heinrich Kernebeck, were the sons of Johann Bernard Kernebeck and Gertrude Euphemia Herving. From Johann Bernard's baptismal record it appears they were from the Epe area of Germany, located in the far NW portion, close to the Netherlands border. They emigrated from the Port of Bremen, Germany to America in 1843. They arrived at the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana, on 2 December 1843 aboard the ship "Inez". Their surname was recorded on the passenger list as "Hennebrick". Johann Bernard was 36 years of age and Bernard Heinrich was 33 years of age. This information was from microfilm of the passenger list National Archives Series#M259-23.

Along with the Brefelt family and Bernard Braker, they made their way north, from New Orleans, to Pistakee Bay, Goodale Township Illinois, which at that time was a part of Lake Co., Illinois but at alater date would become a part of McHenry Co. Their farms were located in McHenry Township #45, Range 9E, Sec 20, as shown on the 1862 and 1872 McHenry County, McHenry Township Plat Map. Deeds for the land they purchased through the years after their arrival, have been located at the McHenry County Courthouse. It is likely that there may also be early land records on file in Lake Co.

The German spelling of the surname "Kernebeck" was changed to "Kennebeck" by the children of Johann Bernard and Bernard Heinrich Kernebeck. Johann Bernard is my maternal 2x great-grandfather. Information in Family Group Records is from church records, federal census records, vital records, obits and also information contributed by family members. I would like to thank Terry Miller who provided me with information going back in time from my great-grandfather Henry Kennebeck, when I first set out in 2001 to begin searching out my maternal ancestors. Terry is a descendant of Johann Bernard and Adelaide Kennebeck, their daughter Anna Maria ( Stilling, Henry ) is Terry's great-grandmother. I would also like to thank David Reinke from Alaska, who is a Kennebeck descendant from another branch in the family tree, Gerhard and Catherine Kennebeck. He copied the St Agatha church records from microfilm for the Kennebeck family and was kind enough to send me copies of these records. For questions or any further information please email
