Johann Bernard and Adelaide (Hemling) Kernebeck

It is unknown at the present time how Johann Kernebeck and Adelaide Hemling met. They were married at St John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg, Il, on 5 June 1856. This was about 12 years after Johann Bernard had come to America with his brother Bernard Heinrich. Both brothers settled and had adjacent farms along Pistakee Bay as shown on the 1862 and 1872 McHenry Township Plat Maps, Sec 20, Range 9.

Johann and Adelaide had four children, two sons, Bernard Heinrich and Johann Heinrich, and two daughters, Anna Margaretha and Maria Catherina. Both Johann and Adelaide died at their family homestead at Pistakee Bay. Johann at the age of 76 on 24 Sep 1883, and Adelaide at the age of 71 on 16 Aug 1891. They are at rest at St John The Baptist Cemetery in Johnsburg, Il.

Their son Bernard Heinrich (Henry) and his wife Elizabeth (Schaefer) lived on the family homestead and this is where several of their first children were born. This original Kernebeck homestead remained in the family until Henry sold the family farmstead about 1896. The barn had long ago disappeared but the house survived until May of 2003, when it was raized. It appears another home is being built in its place. Henry purchased another farm from Albert Howe in McHenry Township, Sec 39, Range 9 as shown on the 1902 McHenry Township Plat Map.

Johann and Adelaide are my maternal 2x gr grandparents, their son Bernard Heinrich is my gr grandfather. Information in Family Group Records was obtained from church records, vital records and obits.
