Grandpa Skene - Merchant Marine |
 |
William Skene (1895-1944),
was the son of William Skene and Mary Ann Cowie, and the grandson of
William Skene (1841-1925) and Margaret Skethway.
My cousin, Carol Galloway is in possession of his Certificate of
Discharge book and a patch that belonged to him.
He
was a Merchant Marine on the vessel named Oanfa as an Engineer. |
Registered Number 115351, code lettering TSPJ, a steel screw
steamer of 8819 gross register tons and 820hp. She was built in
Glasgow, in 1902 for the China Mutual Steam Navigation Company Ltd. by the
Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. and registered in the port of Liverpool.
She was considered to be an ocean liner with Merchant cargo duties. She had a length of 480 feet, a width
of 58.3 feet, and a depth of 32.7 feet with a service speed of 10 knots.
The last of the class of three ships she was completed after the
acquisition of China Mutual Steam Navigation Co. by Holt's and later
became part of the Blue Funnel Line. After an uneventful career she
arrived at Osaka on Christmas Day 1931 where she was broken up.

From the Blue Funnel Line
shipping information that I found, the trade routes varied among the
following: to and from China, Japan, Java and Australia; with
trans-Pacific routes between Japan and British Columbia; also with
Singapore and later a route between China to New York. |
|
The kind of cargo they
carried also varied. They took cotton and woolen goods on outward
voyages from Liverpool and brought back (at least from China) tea, tin and
tobacco to London. |
