A large number of families who came from New England at this time
settled on the St. John River. They called their settlement
Maugerville. The name Sunbury was subsequently given to the whole of the Province west of Cumberland County.
The Hon. Charles Burpee, of Sheffield, writes me that there were about two hundred families who at this time found homes along the river. Some of their names were: Perley, Barker, Burpee, Stickney, Smith, Wasson, Bridges, Upton, Palmer, Coy, Estey, Estabrooks, Pickard, Hayward, Nevers, Hartt, Kenney, Coburn, Plummer, Sage, Whitney, Quinton, Moore, McKeen, Jewett.

Noted events in his life were:
He owned land. Samuel Bridges and sons are mentioned in early records of Sheffield. Samuel and Mary Bridges lost their land in Burton, Sunbury Co., that had been willed to him by his father, Samuel, Sr. and moved to Carleton Co. in 1832. They settled on a lot of land owned by his uncle, John Holland Bridges, in Lakeville. This land was later owned by Henry Williams. The old Bridges house burned. At some time between 1839 and 1854 the Bridges leased the saw mill in Lakeville. The Bridges eventually lost their interest in the mill and land and the sons moved to the State of Maine.
He was religious. The Bridges family was Baptist.
He received medical attention. By 1851 Samuel Bridges was infirm
He signed a will. The will of Samuel Bridges shows that he felt he was in possession of the property in Lakeville. Later events indicate that his sons found themselves indebted to the heirs of their uncle, John Holland Bridges of Sheffield. This was no doubt a factor in their move from the county.
Misc: History of Lakeville, by C. A. McBride, Williamstown, N.B. (a) "The first man to actually settle in Lakeville was Samuel Bridges who moved with his family into a lumber camp in the spring of 1832. This camp was on a farm now owned by Henry Williams. After living in this camp a few years, he built a house about 100 rods to the north. After the mill was built he erected a house in the village and ran a boarding house. He dug a spring in the mill yard and supplied the village with water for a great many years." "Ketchum sold the Mill Block and saw mill to Ralph Ketchum, and afterwards it was leased to various men including Marvin, Copeland, Bridges, Samuel Tracy and Calvin Churchill, who bought it in 1854. Tracy built the first grist mill." "A road was built up from the mill through the woods direct to the St. John River, a great deal of it corduroy, logs of which still remain. At the river deal were rafted and run to the sea-ports for shipment. Early lumbermen constructed the first dam but we can glean no information as by whom or when. Before there was a bridge, the Tracy and Bridges women crossed back and forth across the outlet from the point where an old pine stump still stands." (b)" The first settler, Samuel Bridges, in the spring of 1832, moved with his family into a lumber camp, vacated by Moses Wadell. Samuel Bridges died May 28, 1852, aged 68 years, and was the great-grandfather of the late Mrs. John P. McAuley of Williamstown. Shortly after the mill was burned Bridges built a house in the village and ran a boarding house. The house stood to the east of the mill, and close to the Deal Road. The third house he built was later owned and occupied by the late Hanford Tracy. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bridges had a family of five boys and four girls. Boys: Holland, Gaynor, Rupert (Robert), Thomas and William. Daughters: Mrs. Wilson, who went to New York,: Mrs. David (Daniel) Tompkins who went to Presque Isle; Mrs. John Douglas (Ruggles) to the Annopolis Valley; Sarah, who married Samuel Gray (Tracy) Jr., and settled in Lakeville.
Family Story A story in the McAuley family infers that the Bridges and Tracys had some sort of partnership deal. In some way Tracy, directly or indirectly, undermined the Bridges interest and the Bridges family left Lakeville to settle in the Bridgewater/Monticello area in Maine

Robert married Hannah Anderson , daughter of Unknown and Unknown , on July 17, 1856 in Bridgewater, Maine. Hannah was born on May 11, 1826 in Blackville, Northumberland, New Brunswick, died on May 20, 1926 in Centreville, Carleton County, New Brunswick, at age 100, and was buried in Old Williamstown Cemetary.
Noted events in her life were:
She was religious. Methodist
She died. Death certificate Registration # 1926 03 003012
Death Details: She had been bedridden for the last two years of her life.
Other: Hannah Anderson Bridges was born on the Miramichi, in Northumberland, Co. She was born in Blackville on May 11, 1826, following the Great Fire. The story was told that her mother, Ruth (Burden) Anderson, wife of James Anderson, escaped the fire by wading into the river. With a young daughter in her arms, she was already pregnant with Hannah.
Other: Hannah Anderson lived a rather nomadic life. The Anderson family, on the death of James Anderson, removed to Maine, U.S.A. and later to Williamstown, (Pioneer) Carleton Co. After her marriage, Hannah settled in Lakeville but on the death of her husband, she again moved to Maine, eventually to live in Bridgewater. Hannah lived for a number of years in Bridgewater with her son Samuel where they raised her grandson, Milford Harrington. Milford's mother had died and his father moved on to a new wife and family. Hannah had a short stay in Boston with her daughter, Nettie Moore, but finally came back to Williamstown to spend the sixteen years before her death at the home of her daughter, Jane McAuley.
Other: From Elsie McAuley, who remembered Grandma Bridges and heard comments from her mother-in-law, Jane McAuley.
"Grandma was a very quiet woman as I remember. She hardly ever spoke. She would sit with her elbow on the tank of the stove and say nothing. She used the catalogue to keep her elbow cool. The winter J. P. McAuley died she had come in the fall. He would sit on the other side of the stove and couldn't get her to talk. I only saw her laugh once- I nearly put a dipper of water in the stove. She would sometimes say, "Oh, I want to go home." (Bridgewater) She was never content here. She was bed-ridden for two years. Her mind failed at the last. She would call out at night, "Janie, I want a piece of bread, just a little piece of bread." A lunch would be taken up for her at night, so it would be there." (Allen helped with the care of his grandmother)
"Grandma Bridges lived with Nettie and Robert Grant for a year, in Boston. She liked Robert Grant. Grandma had Bridges cousins in Monticello."
PIONEER
The home of Mrs. Jane McAuley was the scene of a noteworthy and memorable event on Tuesday, May 11, when the family observed the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of their grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Bridges. Mrs. Bridges is the daughter of the late James Anderson, and was born in Blackville, Northumberland Co., N.B. on May 11th 1826, 7 months and four days after the famous Miramichi fire. When a girl she came with her mother and brothers to Mars Hill, Maine, afterwards removing to Lakeville, N.B. where she resided 26 years; from there she moved to Bridgewater, Me., where she lived 28 years, and during the past 16 years she has made her home with her daughter Mrs. Jane McAuley of Pioneer. Mrs. Bridges was married in 1855 at Bridgewater, Maine, to Robert Bridges, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. James Kidder. Her husband died on Nov. 5, 1882 and was buried in Jacksontown, N.B. She has five children as follows: James Bridges of Worcester, Mass., Thos. Bridges, of Bridgewater, Maine, Samuel Bridges of Pioneer, Mrs. C. Moore of Jay, Maine, and Mrs. Jane McAuley. Thirteen grandchildren: Robert Grant of Philadelphia, Muriel Bridges of Worcester, Velma Bridges of Boston, Laura, Lillian and Glenwood Bridges of Bridgewater, Milford Harrington of Bridgewater, Mrs. C. M. Reid of Centreville, Scott H. McAuley of Centreville, Mrs. C. S. Page of Pioneer, and Murray, Allen and Roy McAuley of Pioneer. There are 14 great-grandchildren. Owing to the weather on her birthday, a large number of relatives and friends were prevented from visiting her, nevertheless a goodly number called during the day to show their esteem and appreciation, and she was the recipient of several bouquets and potted flowering plants, also some suitable presents. A large birthday cake was prepared of four layers, on which were placed 100 white and pink candles alternately, to commemorate the century of years which she has providentially been spared to live. Had the day been bright, it was planned to have her photograph taken but unfortunately this was not possible owing to the rainstorm. Thus passes into history one of those rare occasions when four generations are privileged to participate in the celebration of the centennial of a member of the family circle.
She appeared on the census in 1900 in Bridgewater, Maine. 1900 Maine Bridgewater Aroostook Co Reel 588

Other: 34 A History of Mars Hill, by Seth L. Snow Chapter II --- In 1840 Holland Bridges moved to Westfield and was there in company with Mr. Thorn until 1848. Althea D. Bridges, now Mrs. Cyrus Shaw was born in Westfield. When Mrs. Shaw was seven years old or in 1848, Mr. Bridges moved to Mars Hill. He had built a house on the east side of the road on the hill south of where Frank Jones lives. This was the first frame house in the town.--- Mr. Bridges kept some sheep and Mrs. Shaw remembers how they used to card the wool, spin the rolls and weave cloth for the family. She says "When we came to Mars Hill it was all woods. There were no schools to go to. The only light we had at night was a tallow-dip candle. There were three settlers in the town when we came. The first cook stove brought into the town was brought by my Uncle John Ruggles, and we all turned out to see it. It was a "wonder." --- Mrs. Shaw has lived in the town longer than any other woman.-- Mr. Bridges cut the trees where the A.C.I. now stands, in about 1852. Reuben Bridges helped his father clear field and Mrs. Shaw in the Spring of 1853 planted corn among the stumps where the Institute today is.

This road was made for the soldiers of the Aroostook War. The road went by the Tavern, kept by Holland Bridges and Mr. Thorne, in Westfield (Ralph Lamont farm). The Fort Road, known as Ellis Tote Road, went from Bridges' place across the hill, through the woods and connected with the present Fort Road at the bridge in Mars Hill village. Reuben Bridges helped his father, Holland, grub this road out in 1856.

As Mr. Chandler's house was the only one between there and Bridgewater Corner it looks as though they must have lived in Mars Hill, as they visited Mrs. Snow, going up there on the crust.
Mr. Ruggles moved into Mars Hill in 1847 into a log house which he built where Edwin Lydicker afterward lived, just north of the old orchard on the farm now owned by Frank Jones. In that house Samuel Ruggles was born being the first child born in the town.

General info: Ruth Jane Bridges (Jane) was born in Lakeville, Car. Co., N.B., on April 14, 1857. She was the eldest in the family of Robert and Hannah (Anderson) Bridges. As a child she was stricken with diphtheria. She survived the epidemic but a younger sister did not. Jane Bridges had beautiful hair, so long at one time in her life that she could sit on it. She was generous and Hard working. On April 18, 1876 she married John P. McAuley of Williamstown and moved from Lakeville to live with him in the McAuley home, on the McEgan Road. In the home were his parents, William and Margaret McAuley and an unmarried sister, Isabella. William McAuley, who called her "Jeannie", taught her to make butter. She became an excellent butter maker. Mr. Wilson, a store keeper, in Lakeville, would send her butter to a special customer in Boston. Jane McAuley became the mother of seven children. Times were hard and money was scarce. With her husband often away in the woods during the winter there were barn chores as well as household duties. Wool was prepared for yarn and there was plenty of knitting to be done. When the family moved to the Williamstown Road, an addition was made to the house there. The large pine tree planted at the time of the move by her son. Vincent, later gave the name "Pine Tree Farm" to the location. At middle age, Jane McAuley became afflicted with myxoedema, a thyroid deficiency. Dr. Brown of Centreville was able to prescribe medication that saved her from the disablement that formerly resulted from this illness. Jane McAuley was a Methodist. She died on February 11, 1941, following a stroke. She is buried beside her husband in the Williamstown Cemetery.
Her obituary was published. The death of Mrs. Jane McAuley occurred suddenly at her home in Williamstown. She was 84 years of age and was one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the community. About ten months ago she suffered a stroke and had partly recovered but had another illness in recent months. Before her marriage she was Miss Jane Ruth Bridges, daughter of the late Robert and Hannah Bridges, Lakeville, Carleton Co. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cyrus Reid, Centreville, and Mrs. Charles Page, Williamstown; four sons, Murray, Allen and Roy, Williamstown, and Scott, Centreville; one sister, Mrs. Annetta Moore, Bridgewater, Me., and 18 grandchildren. The funeral was held from her residence with Rev. H. J. Rowley, Centreville, assisted by Rev. R.H.Baxter, Grand Falls, officiating. Interment was in the United Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Hill, Thomas Emery, Robert Smith, Percy Prior, Frank Hume and Wilmot Reid. Williamstown Cemetery,

General info: Milford Harrington was the only child of Clarence and Alberta (Bridges) Harrington. He was born February 28, 1895 in Bridgewater, Maine. His mother died when he was two years old. Milford was raised in Bridgewater by his Grandmother Bridges and his Uncle Sam Bridges. When Milford was very young he lost the sight of one eye as the result of whooping cough. The eye was expelled during a bout of coughing. It was quickly replaced by his grandmother but the damage had been done. Milford was nick-named "Ski" by the people of Bridgewater. He never married. He would say that, "He never found anyone who wanted to marry and not do very well." He worked as a farm labourer and was considered an excellent teamster. Milford boarded at various homes in Bridgewater. He chewed snuff and enjoyed the occasional cigar. In later years he lived in a small mobile home in the village. Milford made regular visits at his cousin, Roy McAuley's, "in the Province." It was there that he died suddenly in the bathroom, on November 9, 1970. He is buried in the Murray McAuley lot in the Williamstown Cemetery. Clarence Harrington remarried and Milford had half siblings to whom he never made himself known. He had once worked with a half brother.

General info: From Jean (McAuley) Carmichael
Glenwood Bridges was somewhat retarded. He married late in life but his wife left him. He went to live in Houlton, Maine. On one or two occasions he made a visit of several days at McAuleys. He amused the McAuley children with his "hocus, pocus" and attempts at magic. Velma Shaw had no children but she and her husband raised Bernice Gee. Bernice had the advantage of an education. Kate Page had wanted to adopt Bernice but this was not acceptable to the family. However Bernice, when a young girl, sometimes visited at Pages in the summer. The Thomas Bridges family lived in poor circumstances. Nettie Moore did what she could to help the family. Several of the children of this connection had what some of the relatives referred to as the "Bridges mouth," a small mouth with large teeth in some cases with front teeth protruding. Edna Gee was a marked victim of this tendency. It was also the bane of the McAuley families but to a lesser degree. Claude Green was a brother of Harley Green.
