The Orphans' Home Notepad: Notes, Tips, and Instructions Re the Citations
-
The census citations found in the Notepad are provided both as an
aid to researchers and to those who would like to donate a list or its transcription to this website.
-
Many of the 1900 U.S. Federal Census citations given in the Notepad utilize Volume#, E.D., and Sheet number (Not Page Number). This is because many of the citations were culled from the 1900 Institution microfilms in which Vol, ED, and Sheet number were used to reference/index the institutions enumerated in that year's census. "Volume#" is needed by microfilm users on that rare occasion when the ED number absolutely cannot be found on the film. For most listings, however, regardless of source, the ED is the more important reference of the two. For those not yet familiar with censuses, "Sheet No." can be found in the upper right corner of the census sheet (i.e., in the same area as the ED).
-
The names of the institutions given in the citations are those that are given in the actual census listing. They may or may not be the full/correct name of that orphanage. On occasion, the name of the institution was not recorded at all in the census and is listed here as "Unnamed" (e.g., "Unnamed Orphans' Home").
-
Please also be aware that none of the lists are complete. If you know of a citation that does not yet appear in the Notepad, feel free to send it to me in an email for inclusion. Please be sure to include the country, state/province, county, township or other locality, ED, and year of the census for that particular listing!
-
If you plan to donate a photocopy of a list: Please be sure to include the maker of the film (i.e., NARA, Heritage Quest, etc.) and the roll number in your citation. Print the citation as well as your e-mail address (please, don't forget your email address!) on the back of your photocopy and mail it to me at the following address:

The citations included here are as accurate as they can possibly be at this time. Nevertheless, errors may still exist. Question marks and interpretation attempts appear on the lists of citations where the handwriting was not clear. If you were not able to locate a listing using one of the citations in the Notepad please inform me of the bad cite. Depending on circumstances, I will either remove the cite or add a notation to it on the list.

Thanks in advance to those of you planning to donate/transcribe a list, or pass along a cite.
