Smith
Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee
early 1900's

Looking for the family of my grandfather, George A. Smith. He was born in Michigan around 1902. His father's name was Frank Smith. He had two sisters, Blanch and Beatrice Smith. All the information that I have now, is that Frank committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train (so the family legend goes). All three children were seperated. Blanch sent to Detroit, Beatrice to Chicago and George to Milwaukee. They were all supossed to have been in orphanages. Looking for ancestor information and any descendants of Blanch or Beatrice.

John Stumpf, Stump
Michigan Children's Institute State public School
1930 - ?

I am searching for the brothers and sisters of JOHN STUMPF, son of GEORGE H.STUMPF and ESTHER PEARL NOTTINGHAM STUMPF. According to a letter from the Michigan Children's Institute, the seven younger children were made wards of the state on August 28, 1929, and the five youngest were sent to the State public School in 1930. Children's names were: Maude, b. 1908, Irene, b. 1911, Leo, b. 1912, Richard, b. 4/2/1916, Dora Isabelle, b. 8/11/1919, John Robert, b. 2/2/22, Marjorie, b. 9/17/23, and Louis Joe, b. 2/18/25. George Stumpf was sent to Jackson State Prison, possibly for bootlegging. The children were taken from Esther because of "neglect and poor living conditions". George and Esther later divorced, and were living in Farmington, MI. The parents were given to understand that they would be arrested if they attempted any contact with the children. The oldest, Maude, was already on her own, I think married, as well as Irene, who's married name was Cowan. I think Leo joined the military. Richard was eventually adopted by the Plassey family, Dora and John were taken in as foster children by Charles and Lena P. Quirk. However, Dora was returned to the orphanage, because she wanted to "mother" John, and Mrs. Quirk couldn't handle her. Marjorie was also living with a family later, and Louis Joe was adopted by the Jones Family. I am searching for relatives of Maude, Irene, Leo, Richard or Dora. I understand that Richard's family may have a family Bible. I also understand that Leo's family may have tried to contact our family years ago. My father, John, who is deceased, spent some time in Battle Creek Michigan working on a state run farm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Verschueren
Cleveland, Ohio, United States
1921- 1924

My mother, Ella Rosalie Verschueren, her two sisters, May Imozine and Ruth Naomi were put in a Girls training school in Cleveland in late 1921 or early 1922. Their mother was dead and their father abandoned them. Another sister Frances Lenora Verschueren and a brother Arthur Verschueren were place in an orphanage and placed up for adoption. Family members got the little girl, the boy was adopted out sometime during 1922. I would like the name of the training school and the name of the orphanage. Where are records, who do I need to contact. My mother and all of the sisters are dead, the brother would be in his nineyies, so he is also dead. But I would like to have our history for our family. Thank you for any info you could give me.

Tate/Tait
Texas/Oklahoma
1887/1910

Searching for information on Lat Tate, born in TX 1886. His mother died when he was about 2 and an older brother took him and his 4 other brothers to try and raise. The older brother apparantly gave up the job and at least the 3 youngest were placed in various households in OK. The only records found have been census record from 1910, Pottawattomie Co. OK where Lat was 24 and working for Anna Harris. The next record was marriage in Love Co. OK in 1911 and census from Love Co in 1920 with wife and family. The location from birth in 1886 to 1910 are a complete mystery. Lat died in 1925 in Love Co. OK. Would really like to find early records on him. All we know is, Father was either Thomas or Tobias Tate, Lat was born in TX in 1886 and next found in OK in 1910. Any help at all is appreciated. Jo Cox

Robertson
Austin Texas USA
1924

Looking for children of a Pauline Robertson. I am the 5th child and had the name of Robertson. Previous children may have a different last name if she was married before. We were all adopted out, do not know if any in orphanages. Records in Texas sealed but I found birth name only in state book. Born: Mildred Maudine Robertson Sept. 1924. Dummy birth certificate says Austin, Travis County TX but the state book shows: Tarrant County which might mean I was born in Ft. Worth. I've been tracing a Pauline Robertson who died in Ft. Worth but lost information on her in the 1920 census. My name was changed to Marlys Evelyn Nichols when I was adopted in Los Angeles CA. Due to my age I don't expect to find many if any relatives but there may be friends or children that have information on P.R.

Layton/Linden/Lindell Hall, Virginia, USA

Catherine Agnes Rose's two sons, Louis B. and Zona J. were in a childrens' home in Virginia, possibly Bristol. Name of the home is said to be Layton Hall or Linden Hall or some such name. Does anyone know of this home? Their father died in 1909 and in a photo of them said to be taken at the home, it must be somewhere around 1912/13.

Connolly, Mccarthy
Boston, MA
1909 -1930

My grandfather Charles Henry Connolly and his twin, George Elmer Connolly was born 11/14/1909 at 159 Chelsea ST, Boston, MA. to a Annie Mccarthy. The birth certificates were logged 1/1910. Annie was a single Irish woman at that time. She gave the children up. We can't find any info during this time except the birth certificates listing her as the mother with no father. My question is "Where would two new borns go after they were given up in Boston MA?" George E Connolly ended up in a boys home somewhere in MA and Charles Henry Connolly stayed in a foster home his whole youth. Any suggestions would be most helpful. We are running out of directions with this.
