Newark Orphan Asylum, Newark, New Jersey, USA
1906-1911?

My father, Edgar John BROSS, JR. (1899-1947) became a resident at the Newark Orphan Asylum, Newark, NJ after the death of his mother, Frederica BRAUN BROSS in 1906. Dad's younger brother, John BROSS was also a resident there but died there in 1914 at age 9 years. He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Newark, NJ. Dad was originally named Louis Edward BROSS and that is the name by which he would have entered the orphanage. He went by the name of "Eddie" at that time. In 1942, among other things, he legally changed his name to Edgar John Bross, JR. I have wanted to find dad's orphanage records, but have been unable to do so. His mother was Frederica BRAUN, born in Germany in 1879 and came to the US with her parents in 1880. I don't know where they came from in Germany. I just wonder if those orphanage records would give me more insight into my dad's family. If anyone knows where the records are, who to contact, etc., I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Bennett and/or Fitzgerald
Some where in Oklahoma
From 1918-1925

My grandmother Rosa/Rose/Rosalie Frantz told my mother that she couldn't remember her maiden name, she said it was either Bennett or Fitzgerald. She was born March 08, 1907 in Oklahoma and died March 10, 1968 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The story that she told us was that her father ran her and other siblings off with a garden hoe when she was about 11 or 12 so that would be around 1918 or 1919. She said she couldn't remember if she lived in an Orpans home or not, but did live with some people named Bennett and then the Fitzgerald's adopted her. I do know that the Fitzgeralds was her last home, because my Uncle Gene remember's going there. It was in Potaeu, Oklahoma. Then the story was told by another person, saying that Fitzgerald was her maiden name and that her mother remarried a Bennett. (So! Now, I am really confused!) She remember her mother being named Maggie Fitzgerald and her father being C. P. Fitzgerald. I have found information on Maggie, her name was Margaret Rebecca " called Maggie" Rawls, and C. P. I believe to be named Charles Patrick " called Charlie" Fitzgerald. Margaret R. "Maggie" Rawls was born to Peter Rawls, and Margaret Green. I don't know if Peter had another name or not, but I can't seem to find him anywhere. Charles P. " Charlie" Fitzgearld was the son of Charles Fitzgerald and Mary Elizabeth Long. My grandmother said at one time she had almost married her brother, but couldn't remember his name. My father said that my grandfather had marked throw some names and stuff from my grandmothers bible. The bible is no where to be found. I do wished that if someone has it that they would write to me, so that we can get things straight, know where to look if in a different direction and search/or find more people, for my grandmother's sake. Thank you Debbie

william conway quarrells/quarrel/quarles
jefferson co tennessee
lifetime

we know that william conway qurrrells/quarrels/quarles was born in jefferson co tennesse and lived most of his life there, married a mary adeline mccarter his second wife, we think, his father was a circuit riding methodist preacher and died when wm was vey young, there is some evidence that his mother, allegdly elizabeh, bound him and his siblings out to various persons in 1834, in jeff county when he was about 4 yrs old. theres no evidence that he/siblings were ever in any inst for orphans but just bound out because the mother could't afford them or that was maybe the equivalent back in those days, a mother with 4 or 5 children to raise and no husband could'nt just g out and find a job and i expect, binding them out was her only choice.none of these children was over 6 years old in 1834.

CARRUTHERS
Liverpool Sheltering Home, Liverpool, Lancs, ENG
1887-9

CARRUTHERS; Dorothy Elizabeth, Isabella, Mary Jane (Jenny), Margaret and Frances though not orphaned per se, were sent to Canada as British Home Children, 1888/89. They -- as well as a brother, John -- were the children of Jane (ROUTLEDGE) and Richard CARRUTHERS of Liverpool, ENG. I don't know what happened to John, but believe he stayed in England. I am seeking whereabouts of the descendants of the above. My grandmother, Dorothy Elizabeth CARRUTHERS TAIT, settled in Montreal, QC. One sister, Isabella (m. LARNER)lived in the Valleyfield, QC area. Frances (m. STYLES) married in Amherst, NS. Mary Jane (SHELL) and Margaret (TUDGE) married in the Richmond/Melbourne, QC area but I have no idea what happened to the sisters -- or their families -- after 1901.

SHAKESPEARE
New Brunswick/TAY MILLS/Stanley, CANADA
1905-1914

I am looking for any information someone might have regarding my great-grandfather Alfred Henry Shakespeare and his brother George. Both were Middlemores "Home Children" sent over on the SS Siberian in June 1905 to work for at least one fellow, Mr.Fred Armstrong of Tay Mills. Other people and records have indicated that they stayed wtih a Mr. Harrison in Stanley, New Brunswick. There are gaps between when my great-grandfather Alfred arrived in Canada, and whenhe enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914. He also married my great-grandmother Nellie (Ella Florence MARR) in 1916 in Sussex, New Brunswick, the witnesses being a Mr. Graves & Mrs. Frederick McEwen of that area. We then lost them again after that. Any information would be greatly appreciated. -Michelle Shakespeare-Martin

Kurt Pickering,   pickeringenealogi st_pickering@hotmail.com,    Mon Feb 19 07:38:14 2001

Pickering
Greene Co, OH
about 1880

Never thought about him being in an orphanage, but here's the deal: My great-grandfather, John Franklin "Frank" Pickering, was born in October of 1876 in Missouri. He was the third child of Joseph F. and Victoria (Orndorff) Pickering. His older siblings were a brother Charles and a sister Margaret, not ncessarily in that order. Neither would have been born before 1870, given that Joseph and Victoria married in November 1869. Victoria died in July 1877, and Joseph was apparently not up to single parenting. You see, I couldn't find the family in the 1880 Missouri census but finally located Joseph - listed as single! - in Greene CO, OH, that year. It made sense that he went there - where Victoria was from, where they had wed, where Frank would come of age and marry in 1898, and near where Frank's sister Margaret - whom my father remembers as Aunt Maggie - was living in the 1930s. But with Joseph listed as single, the question became where are his THREE children? I've been trying to find them in a relative's household - several of Victoria's siblings lived out their lives in Greene Co - but without success. Maybe, this new website makes it occur to me, they were placed in an orphanage. It would be somewhere in the Dayton, OH, area - possibly Xenia or Spring Valley. It might even have been temporary - Joseph married again in 1881 and was living in the county in 1910, but of course the next logical census to explore while the kids are still kids - the 1890 - is unavailable. Frank was a brick wall for a long time. Placing him in his childhood would just about wrap him up! Thank you for any help you can provide.

George ? NORWOOD
Munjoy HIll 'Orphanage" / Portland , Maine
about 1895 to 1900

My father, GEORGE NORWOOD HOWE, told a story about being adopted from an 'Orphanage" on Munjoy Hill, in Portland Maine, and being raised by the Walter Howe family in Roxbury, Maine till his 21st birthday. He was handed One-hundred dollars and told his birth name was NORWOOD, which he used as a middle name. He claimed there were two young boys in the crib and the Howe's came in and chose him, he 'thought' he was about 3 or 5 years old and the other boy may have been a brother. Roadblock #1...According to the history of Portland, there has NEVER been an orphanage on Munjoy HIll, that district burned during the early 1900's. Roadblock #2...The Cumberland County Courthouse burned in the 1910's and all records were lost. Later in life, Dad found a lawyer in Portland, named NORWOOD,but never got around to going to visit him, and when I decided to , we found he had passed away, leaving no family , a month before Dad did, in 1958.

COLBURN
IN, MI, possibly also, OH

I am trying to find the parents of my great grandfather, Alonzo Colburn. Alonzo was said to have been born in 1853 in Ft. Wayne, Allen Co., IN. The history that we have is: Alonzo was orphaned at an early age. A minister gave him and his siblings to different families to raise. If this is true, his parents must have died together or close in time, to have made no provisions at all for the children. I have no names of other children. Alonzo didn't care for his living arrangements, and at about the age of 12 years, he set off on his own. He ended up in Menominee, MI where he married Elizabeth Kinney on May 28, 1878. On their marriage license, he lists a Joel Colburn as his father. This is all we know about him. There is no record of him that we can find in Ft. Wayne or anywhere in Indiana. I have found a reference to a Juel Colburn (may be misspelled) in Ohio once. If Alonzo did leave at such an early age on his own, Ft. Wayne may just be a place he remembered and thought he was born in. He and Elizabeth had the following children: (Some of the names they gave them may have been from siblings he remembered)--- Chester Arthur (my grandfather); Orville; Estella; Alonzo, Jr; Albert; Emma; Margaret; Grace; Alice; George; Laura; and Francis Laurence. Does anyone have anything that may be a clue to this part of my family? Or a direction to go in? I would desperately like to find some answers and some siblings for Alonzo. They may have even come down from Canada, we don't know. He was Catholic, we think. He married a Catholic and the family on that side has stayed Catholic. Thanks for any help. Neeld, Nield
Fulton, DesMoines county, Iowa
10

On Sept. 24, 1894 the Protestant Home for Children (Protestant Orphan Asylan)in Pittsburgh, Pa. placed with Mrs. M. Crithers Harry Neeld 8 years of age, Charles Neeld, 4 years, and Sarah Neeld age 6. The letter from the home states they were to be placed in Fulton, Demoines County, Iowa. There is no Fulton in Des Moines county but perhaps someone has heard of the location. Charles died in the home, but Harry and Sarah returned to Pittsburgh when they became of age. We are told she worked hard on the "farm". The letter was signed by Mrs. Florence M. Robosson, Supt. of the Protestant Home, but currently the home does not have any of these records. Any information regarding the Iowa home would be appreciated. I would like to obtain the children records, if possible. Thank you.

Unknown- Possibly Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
1867- 1870

I am looking for any information on my grandmother. Her name is unsure as I have two different names for her from other relatives who know nothing about her other than what I am posting. Her name is either MARGARET LAURA ELIZABETH BEATY or MARY LAURA ELIZABETH BEATY. Per the family bible she was born July 1, 1864. She "might" have had a brother by the name Wallace Beaty as a bible belonging to him was found in one of my uncle's old trunks. It stated he was born December 4, 1859. Lizzie, as my grandmother was called, married in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on September 8, 1885 to Charles Augustus Shuman of Mecklenburg County, son of James W. Shuman and Jane Elizabeth Stauffer (Shuman). Since she met her husband in Mecklenburg County, this "might" be where she was born. One of her daughters remember that she worked as a house girl but does not know for whom or where. This is all the information I have for Lizzie. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Northbridge, MA Pawtucket, RI

Hello, I am the Grandaughter of Marion Frances Haworth. Nana was the product of two or three adoptions, the first begining in 1905, in Northbridge,MA. At that time her name was Mary Mortland Booth. Adopted by Herbert and Lottie Moore (Milford MA), the adoption did not last long. (Rumer had it that the Moores divorced). Eventually she was adopted by a RI couple, Walter and Sarah Chick. I am looking to locate info on Nanas sibilings, as she herself did unsucessfully, all her life. JOHN BOOTH (dob 7-1891 PA)CHARLOTTE BOOTH ( DOB 3-1894 CT.)MARGARET BOOTH ( DOB 9- 20-1897).Last known location for these children, and their father, CHARLES EDWIN BOOTH ( ENG 4-1861)was Northbridge, MA. (Mother was Elizabeth Mortland Booth. She died in Worcester, MA in 1903.) At this time, records indicate that only Nana was placed for adoption. I have know idea if she herself ever lived in an Orphange. The first adoption did not address this. However, she may have lived in an Orpahange in between her two adoptions. Also, she had memeories that suggested she may have "lived at school" in NH for a short time. Any info, clues, or suggestion appreciated. Other locations that the family had lived include, PA, Moosup,CT., Northbridge, MA. Thank you! Jayne Compton
