My father was born 1921 in Hamtramck, Michigan. His father was Frank Kott (aka Francis Kot), a Polish immigrant. His mother was Viola Bella Urquhart, a Canadian. In March 1926, my father (George Edward Francis Kott) and his siblings (William, John, and Mary Ellen) were made wards of the court and placed in the Detroit St. Vincent De Paul Society Orphanage. The boys were placed in foster homes in the Detroit area. Mary Ellen was place in home in Macomb County (probably Mt. Clemens), Michigan. She died of the measles and pneumonia in April 1926. Their parents were not dead and the children were never given up for adoption, but the nuns refused to give my father or his siblings any information about why they were placed in the orphanage or what became of their parents. Even as adults they were unable to obtain any meaningful information. We have learned that Frank Kott was a resident of Eloise Hospital for an undetermined length of time. We would like to know why our father was placed in the orphanage and what became of his parents. Does anyone know where and how to locate the records from the Detroit St. Vincent De Paul Society? Or the records from Eloise Hospital?

Dorothea was adopted, but I was not due to medical reasons. When I was a teenager my father got me out of the orphanage, located in Davenport, Iowa. Alice FLEET - born 1862 - was living with William H. Frank family -she married John C. Griffin & is buried in Burkhart Cem., Racine, Newton Co., MO. (ON HER DEATH RECORD IT STATES: "Father: Abraham FLEET, born TN. Mother: UNKNOWN NOTE: The only Abraham FLEETS I have found came from FLEET families in New York. There was also an Abram FLEET on Jasper Co., MO. 1870 census. I am unsure as to who he was. Eli (or Ely) Allen FLEET (shown on death record as E. A. FlEET) was living with Eli Rippy family - Eli eventually married Eli Rippy's niece, Mary Ellen Rippy & they also eventually moved to Hunt Co., TX. I believe there is a big chance these Fleet sisters & their brother quite possibly were Orphan Train children. I also found out most citizens of Laclede Co., MO. went to the ABO CHURCH. My great grandmother Natalie Viola Hunt was born Dec 13, 1900. She was said to be in an orphanage in Lansing Michigan. She went to look for records when she was of age and said the place burned down with all the records, sometime between 1900 and 1920. She also had an adopted brother Ralph not sure if from the same place. It was said that she was from a family member and adopted by Charles Hunt and Margaret James Hunt. Not sure if the family member was a Hunt or a James. There was an Albert James who also lived in the area that was Margarets brother. Any help what so ever would be greatly appreciated!!

I am looking for information on the St. John's Orphan Asylum, aka, St. John’s School and Asylum located in Utica, NY. It was founded in 1834 and run by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. A new building to house the orphans was built in 1912. In 1901 or 1961 (conflictin records) it became Utica Catholic Academy, a girl's school. I am looking for physical information on the building and also information from residents who lived there. I see you have St. Francis Roman Cath listed for 1900 - nothing for mid 1900's yet? My oldest brother was in St. Francis but in 1947-?. My next brother was in St. Anthony - either in Ne Haven or Hartford. I was in an infant orphanage having just been born, nammed St. Agnes in Hartford,CT. They are all out of existence now. My great-grandmother was born in Elizabeth in 1872. According to my "family history", which leaves too much unsaid, "One day whie their mother was at work, the priest from St. Mary's came and took Ellen and Mary to an orphanage in Newark, the other children ran and hid in the bushes. After a short while at the orphanage, Mary ran away and asked a man on the street for carfare which he gave her and she came back home to Elizabeth by trolley, but Ellen had to stay there for three years." My grandmother married in 1888, so this must have happened sometime around 1880-1882, since she was able to find her way home. Could this be the St. Mary's Orphanage on South Orange Street? Does it still exist? Where could I find records from that time period. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Also, does that story sound likely?

I have the record books Vol I,II,and III for the Mexico Orphanage and Old Folks Home in Mexico, Indiana. These records were compiled by Mary Ettinger in 1989. They are available at the Kosciusko Co. Historical Society in Warsaw,IN but I would be glad to do lookups for anyone if this source is unavailable to you. All volumes are indexed by last name and contain information about birhdates, parent names, who they were farmed out to for labor, when they were admitted and when they finally left. Some of the information is not accurate such as birthdates but it does contain a lot of information not found anywhere else. My mother, her sister, and brother spent varing times in this orphanage which was run by the Dunkard Church. My mother had many stories to tell about her time spent there--most of them not good. I also have 2 pictures of the orphanage with children in front of it. One picture has my mother in it so I know it was taken between 1912 and 1915 so the orphan you are looking for may be in that picture. The other picture is on the cover of one of the volumes and I have no idea of the date for it.

It requests a delayed special registration of birth, stating the birth was not before made in a public record "in accordance with the act of July 16, 1941." The form states the place and date of birth, and parents' names and residence of the family at the time of this birth...which was Clearfield Co. PA. His parents were deceased at the time of the filing of the petition. My question is...does this mean my ancestor was specifically an "orphan" or was the birth registration assigned to the "Orphan's Court" because of the delay in filing? My gggrandmother Natalie Viola Hunt was born December 13, 1900 and was adopted from a home in either Lansing or Flint Michigan shortly after her birth. She was adopted by Charles Hunt and Margaret (James) Hunt who homesteaded in Hersey Michigan. Natalie told the story of being adopted and that her birth mother was also a family member, not sure which side or how close of a family member (sister, aunt, cousin?). Natalie once told the story of when she turned 18 she went to seek out the records but the orphanage burned down prior to that and she was unable to find anything because at that time the records were not sent to the county. My grandmother Ovedee Phillips and maybe some of her siblings ws placed in an oprhanage in Arkansas due to the fact their parents passed away. Their father was killed on a train in Sikkeston, Mo going to California to get a job and when he got there he was suppose to send for the family but he was killed. Then she loaded the children up in a covered wagon and brought them to Ar. from Tompkinsville, Ky. I don't know how long she was there when she died of pneumonia. But Mr. Crane passed away and his wife sent my grandmother back to the orphanage saying the adoption never went thru and then there was a rumor by his family later on that she done it due to the fact she was afraid she would ahve to share his estate with his family, and that is why she put her back in the orphange but like i said it was justa rumor. Hello, I am looking for any information regarding my grandfather, James Cunningham. He was born in 1873. Aparently, his mother died in a fire when he was 9 years old, and he and his brother, John, were sent to the Vine Street orphanage in Chattanooga Tennessee. We are not sure of his birthplace, but we think he might have been born in Germany and came to America as a baby. The family might have settled in Stevenson, Al. before the death of his mother. We are not sure what happend to his father. We do know my grandfather was adopted by John McMahan of Trenton Georgia. There is very little history regarding my grandfather, except that he married one of John McMahan's relatives, Elizabeth Christian. He died in 1935 in Birminham Al. I am looking for information on my G-G-Grandmother ( Sarah Jane May), who was an orphan in the Augusta Orphan Asylum ( A.K.A) Tuttle Newton Home. As listed in her obituary, she was a native of South Carolina. Sarah was born Jan 13, 1877, and died in Augusta, Ga on Nov 27, 1955. She is buried in the Westview Cemetery in Augusta, Ga. She was married to Thomas Jefferson Thompson and had 6 children - ( Malcolm Lee Thompson, Wallace Thompson, Annie Marie Thompson, Thomas Jefferson Thompson. I'm searching for information about my grandmother's brother, Albert Krebs. He was placed in an orphanage when their parents died. My grandmother and her sister went to live with other relatives. However, the youngest child, Albert, went to an orphange. He was born 22 Sep 1892. He was placed in the orphanage sometime after 1895, and stayed there until he ran away when he was 12 years old (1904). I don't know where the family was living at the time their mother died. However, likely places are Franklin, Jackson County, WI; Iron River area in Bayfield County, WI; or around the Menominee, WI area. I am not an orphan from a home, but i have been searching for one for quite a while. My problem is that i do not know the name fo the home(s) that the people i am searching for were in. I am looking for anyone who may have information on Nathan Allen and his sister Kathryn (any variety of spellings) Allen. They were left on church steps in Tioga or Potter county somewhere around the years 1906 to 1909. the children stayed together in the home they were sent to for some time then kathryn was sent elsewhere and Nathan never saw her again. I am searching for this information for my boyfriends father. He is the son of Nathan and would really like to find his fathers sister. If anyone could help me with the names of the homes in these areas or maybe someone finds the names of these people familiar i would really love to hear form you. We have no idea where the family comes from and it would mean so much for us to find Kathryn and/or her descendants. According to my great grandmother, Annie [who passed in 1984], she and her brother Guy were put in a GA orphanage by their mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD/LANGFORD. I believe they lived at the orphanage sometime between late 1900, because Annie was on the June 1900 census for Greene Co, GA, aged 8 mos old w/ her mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD. Guy was not born yet. When Annie/Guy's father, ________ LANKFORD/LANGFORD [unknown first name] either died or disappeared, their mother, Ellen Jane LANKFORD/LANGFORD remarried in Oct 1907 in Oconee Co, GA. Her new husband's name was William Judson "Jett" LANDRUM. He took Annie/Guy out of the orphanage and gave them his name, LANDRUM. They are all together on the 1910 Morgan Co, GA census under the name LANDRUM. So that puts Annie/Guy all being in the orphanage until about late 1900 to Oct 1907. On 12/13/1946 Carol had a daughter named Starla Diane, who was relinquished 11/15/1948 and place in the State Children's Home(Denver, CO). She then meet a college student name William Hicks from Boulder, CO. This is my alleged father. I was born on 5/26/1949 as Darryl Eugene D'Ascenzo in the Florence Crittenton Materity Home(Denver, CO). My name was later changed to Darryl Eugene Reid. Carol married Gordon Staplekamp 1/1951 and divorced in 6/1951. I was placed in The Denver orphan's Home on 9/5/1951 and remaind there until my adoption 4/1/1958. WADDELL/WEDDELL, Margaret, was placed in an orphanage on December 27, 1888. For names of mother and father on her death Certificate it is handwritten: "no way of finding out infant, taken from orphanage in childhood". She was raised by Wm. & Hattie (Hackett) Stephenson at Tuscola, IL. Family believes she was taken out of the orphanage at 4 days of age. The Stephenson's never adopted her and referred to her as their foster daughter. I have no further information on her childhood. She is listed on the 1900 census as being 11 years old in the household of the Stephensons. She died at the age of 43 of pernicious anemia. My mother's family knew nothing more about her, that they would admit anyway. It was a hush-hush topic in the family. I wrote to City of Cincinnati for her birth record and they referred me to the Probate Court in Hamilton County, OH. I have not yet done that. Matilda JOHNSON / JOHNSTON married William WRSTACOTT circa 1880, they immigrated to Australia in 1889. Am looking for any info re blue eyed baby boy found deserted in St.Patrick's Cathedral in Newark, NJ on April 23, 1932 or April 24, 1932. Wonderful news to share!! Made one phone call to the Bethesda Home for Boys in Savannah and was given my grandfathers and his brothers date of admission and discharge! after looking for 30 years, at last. with a simple call. there is a museum there with books and photos. the books will contain the parents names, who brought the children to the orphanage, where they went , etc. and there are photos of the children!!! Now i am trying to locate someone in savannah to do this for me as we all live in florida. we had made trips there in the past and was told the records burned for those years, 1890 to 1900!!! not true!! they have them!! sheila in florida

My grandfather, Francis (Frank) Daly was born out of wedlock to a woman in 1900. She is reported, through family history, as being Mary McMahon from Ireland. He supossedly is named for his father, Francis or Frank Daly, also from Ireland. I am unable to locate his birth certificate, as it was detroyed in the fire that followed the Earthquake of 1906. His mother kept him until he was 5, and due to unknown circumstances (marriage? finances?) surrendered him to the care of the orphanage. He was always reluctant to go into further detail - evidently he did not have a happy life in the orphanage. Since he died in 1987 I have lost any chance of getting more info from him. 1) Can you tell me the name of a Catholic orphanage in opperation in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century? 2) Any hints or suggestions as to how to approach a search? I have checked census records for both possible parents' names for 1900 and find few concrete leads. I have also checked some newspaper files and archives for leads (birth announcement, marriage in proximity to surrender). All have been dead ends. Any suggestions or leads? Thank You, Charly Collins

I am searching for an orphanage or asylum in which my great- grandmother, Catherine Berst, might have been placed by her father, Jacob, ca. 1850s. Possibly it was "The Children's Home" in Brown County? If so, where was that located? According to The Revised Statutes of Ohio by Curwen, which provides insight about the law as it stood in 1854 with regard to "orphaned" or unwanted children it was customary for unwanted children to be placed in orphanages until TOWNSHIP clerks (not county officials) or overseers of the poor cound place them in an indenture situation, where they might learn a trade (and earn their keep, I guess). I plan to search township records when the various clerks can accommodate my request. Catherine's father lived in Campbell County KY (1850) and in Miami Township, Clermont County (where he remarried in 1854.) Catherine seems to have been indentured to a Ludwig Braun/Louis Brown in the Village of Arnheim in Franklin Township, Brown County. She was enumerated with this family and several other unrelated adults in the 1860 census. I searched the 1850 and 1860 (page by page) census of Brown and Clermont counties and did not find an orphanage, or a large group of unrelated children enumerated together. If a certain Children's Home in Brown County was in operation in the 1850s, can someone tell me which township it was in? I guess I missed it. It might provide me with a link to where Jacob Berst might have placed Catherine before she was "bound out." I have looked into the placement of children in Ohio, but I don't know if I was able to get back far enough: In "Child Placing in Ohio," which was published by the Division of Charities, Dept. of Public Welfare in Columbus Ohio in 1928, I read: p. 42: "BROWN COUNTY, POPULATION 22,621 "Brown County, a rural county of about 22,000 population, stretching along the Ohio River, with the county seat at Georgetown, was the first county to take advantage of the foregoing law in the abandonment of the Children's Home. This institution, a large rambling brick structure, built many decades ago, was in such bad condition that the commissioners were faced with abandonment and rebuilding a new institution or adopting the other plan of appointing a Child Welfare Board which would proceed to care for the children in family homes. "The latter was done after the old institution was legally abandoned and closed in 1922. A placing agent was secured and home finding became an active concern of the board and placing agent. One family licensed to board as many as six children has served for the past few years as the receiving home where children first come and stay temporarily until they are placed in other foster homes. "Since the Child Welfare Board has taken charge of the work in 1922, they have had 71 wards who have been cared for in this manner." And on p. 10,: CHILDREN IN INFIRMARIES, JAILS AND REFORM SCHOOLS "In 1853 township trustees, overseers of the poor, and certain public officers were given legal rights to "bind out" orphan children to any orphan asylum incorporated under the laws of the state, the children to remain in said orphan asylum until the trustees should find suitable homes for them when they might be indentured at service. Thus the dependent, neglected child was either "bound out" to the few private orphan asylums then existing with the possibility of placement by the trustees of the asylum; was indentured to a private family directly by the township trustees or overseers of the poor, or was sent to the jail, infirmary, or an overcrowded reform school. For years thereafter and until the County Children's Home system got under way, most of the dependent children were tragic objects of humanity, swarming the infirmaries that housed the dregs of adult and senile society. There were 2273 children under 16 years of age under care in the infirmaries during the year 1877 (Annual Report of Ohio Board State Charities, 1876, p. 103) ." On p. 6, "That placing dependent children in the care of private families was early practiced by Ohio institutions and agencies was brought to light time and again by the old Ohio Board of State Charities after its creation in 1867, with general inspectional powers to ascertain the conditions in all charitable institutions. It was not, however, until 1913 that the care and protection of the dependent children of the State became an active and specialized function of the state government."
