The Story as told by Dan Williams and handed down
Leonard and his brother Bill

Leonard and Bill Williams were born in Tennessee....In 1816 were living near Choteau's Trading Post in Oklahoma Indian Teritory with the Cherokees. The "Bowl" was chief at the time. Major BRADFORD US Army, filed a report with the Secretary of War tha an army of 600 Cherokees and 11 white men, including Leonard and Bill Williams, their future father in law Isaacs, under John McLemore and the "BOWL" completely wiped out an Osage Indian town near the present site of Claremore. About 100 men women and children were killed and 104 prisoners taken by the Cherokees. August Choteau reported that the town and the crops were burnt and 25 white scalps recovered from the village. Major Bradford's report strongly condemned the action and the whites who aided the Cherokees. He said "the white wre more savage than the Indians. Regardless of who was right or wrong, pressure from the US Army probably was the reason for Leonard and Bill to enter Texas (Pecan Point) at Nacogdoches about 1819 or 1820 with their helf breed wives, Nancy and Mary Isaacs respectively.

It was Spanish territory at the time of the first mention of Leonard listed as "Leonardo" in an early census. Soon afterwards Leonard and Bill wre captured by Comanches or Kiowas (probably Pa-hua-ka and his Keeches).. For two years they emained captives of this nomad tribe that ranged from Northern Mexico to the Arkansas River in Kansas and Colaorado. They saw the "Shining Mountains" (probably Pikes Peak and vicinity), and possible went as far north as Shoshone territory in Wyoming, as the Comanches were Shoshonies who decided to migrate whre they would be clser to the source of their transportaiotn, the horses on the ranches in Northern Mexico. They did squaws' work and suffered every indignity such as having hteir meant "spit" on by warriors before they were allowed to eat it. The squaws bneat themon every occasion but they survived, and learned the Comanche languagte. Finally, they either escaped or wre freed, most likely the latter, as Leonard went back to the Comanches many times on trading trips.

The 1830 census lists Lenoard Williams with a family of 3 living at nacogdoches, Coahuila-Texas. Leonard Williams and Nancy Isaacs and 3 sons: Tom, Leonard Houston, and 3 daughters, Melinda Nancy and Priscilla...:

Colonel Leonard Williams' wife NANCY ISAACS died before the Teas Revolution, and Leonard married Jane Ware, a school teacher, under Mexican rule. After Texas was freed, they remarried at AUSTIN, [Texas] to clear up property rights for children., They had 2 boys and one girl. George was killed in Confederate Army, Brooks was in Confederate Army, I knew him well as he lived across Williams Creek. I visited him with my grandfather. They discussed the Civil War and I listenend. Imagine my surprise when I studied US History and found the Yankees won. Uncle Brooks had two boys and several girls. I remember Jim and Huck Lee. He died at Corsicana in 1925.
