WESTMORLAND MAILING LIST

For those researching their ancestry in the former county of Westmorland,
England and for others with an interest in the county and its past

The county of Westmorland was established for administrative purposes in 1131
but was merged in 1974 with Cumberland, the Furness part of north Lancashire
and a small part of West Yorkshire, to form the county of Cumbria.

REMEMBER WHEN....
Jean Foy sent the following memories, which will hit a chord
with many 'of a certain age'. Follow this link.

INFORMAL GROUP GET-TOGETHERS
The very first 'noggin and natter' between list members was held
at the Riverside Hotel, Kendal on Saturday 28 July '01.
On that occasion, just four list members and their family members
attended, but this number grew a few months later, with the second
social gathering taking place on Friday 12 October '01 at the Kendal Arms.
Distances travelled to the second get-together ranged from less than two miles
(Nigel Hunter) to 350 miles (Jean and Alan Foy from Plymouth)
and 10,000 miles (Susan and Sheryl Gandy from Oz).

The most recent WES Group get-together was a much more
'lavish' affair when, on Saturday 17 August '02 at
the Royal Oak Inn, Bongate, Appleby-in-Westmorland,
a total of 23 list members (including some from
Australia and the USA) and their partners enjoyed a
lively evening of chat, reminiscences, shared interests
and a superb dinner - washed down with many fine beverages J
