ROBART COLTHART christened 05 JUN 1689 Brough Under Stainmore, Westmorland, England - his father noted as JAMES COLTHART. JAMES COLTHARD was described as a "stranger" 5 June 1689.
The next baptism for COULTHARD was recorded on 1 sep 1771: Dorothy, dau of William Coultherd, a labourer and Elisabeth
================== Historical Reference
Brough was divided into two parts, Church Brough, and Market Brough. During the 18th and 19th centuries the village played an important role as a coaching town for the stagecoach traffic in and out of Scotland.
Many men including COULTHARD's came to Brough and surrounding areas were "Cattle Drovers". They would travel along the drovers roads which crossed the boarders of Scotland into England, along these roads, the odd Coulthard settlements began. Following the routes:
Dumfries through Annan through the Solway, Dornick and Bowness, to Carlisle, linked to Lockerbie via Gretna, onto Ettrick thru Longtown, then Penrith to Brough Under Stainmore, and south to Swaledale..
Brough under Stainmore held the "Brough Hill Fair" established when Robert Lord Clifford, in 1331 obtained a Royal Charter from Edward III for a weekly market to be held on Thursdays at Brough. The Brough Hill Fair held on 30 September/1 October annually. A great event where stalls were set up, selling woollen cloth and other merchandise. The event brought crowds of people, together with huge quantities of horses, cattle and sheep for sale. Cattle that were not sold at the event, were moved on to the Fair at Romaldkirk
My line of Coulthards lived in Brough Under Stainmore, Westmorland circa 1750.(In the early to mid 1800's, the Family moved to Durham.....)
I have tried to make the above chart as easy as possible to read. We know that James Colthart came to Brough as a "stranger", not of the area, and had his son Robert christened here in 1660.
I have today 10 May 2006 received a copy of a book written by the late Alfred J Coulthard, of which a very small branch of my Coulthards appear on page 120 of his book Chart 21...He suggests that this branch of the Coulthard Family came from Galloway, Scotland,[located just over the Border at Gretna Green] and that lots of the Coulthards made settlements along the roads, from Scotland into England, many earning their low pay from occupations as "Cattle Drovers".. He also suggests, rather than recommence the journey back to Scotland once the cattle were sold, some Coulthards found a living here south of the border.
This Evidence above supporting something which my family were told many years ago by my grandmother Alice Coulthard that "we came from Scotland"
However, I am not ruling Galloway out as it is in Scotland, and of which my own family were told. I have come across a website which mentions Alfred J Coulthard.(link below). It is thought that the Coulthard origin probably stems from France to a little village in northern France called Couherde. Thus probably taking us deep back into the very distant past. Somewhat Ironic, as I am also tracing the "Orange Family name" which also comes from Normandy, France.
I myself, have a file full of Coulthards, of which in time I intend to publish for everyone to see. The excellent Book by Alfred Coulthard will act as a good reference point. Indeed, I have already picked up on a few points from his chart of Brough Under Stainmore,where though he discovered my James and Isabel (and John) he did not encounter some of their children, and also for me, threw up a surprise too.. That Isabel nee Coats first marriage to John Coulthard who died aged 37, had not one child but two.. I knew of their son William,who sadly died in infancy, but I did not know of son James... to which I have not yet included in the chart above... as marrying a lady by the name of ESTHER......
As I mentioned earlier, my grandmother used to say that we came from Scotland, but that is all we knew.. Her stories were mainly of her childhood and domestic employment, a few stories you can see on my website... Looking at the geographic location of Brough under Stainmore and the historical reference above, makes some sort of clarity, connecting a new branch of Coulthards from Scotland to England where they settled.
Research on the Coulthard family from John Coulthard born Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland abt 1751.
John Coulthard went to Muker,Swaledale, Yorkshire to marry Isabel nee Coats.They married on 23 May 1773 in Brough, Westmorland. John, occupation:labourer, and Isabel settled in Brough. They had one child, William christened on 26 Dec 1776 at the Parish Church of Brough, Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, and then James(ref book by Alfred Coulthard)
John died on 7 May 1778, leaving his wife and young son, William. Sadly, Isabel was to soon suffer further loss, of their young son William, buried on 27 April 1780 - he was just under 2 yrs of age.
Isabel then came to marry a second time, to James Coulthard. He is believed to be a close relative of John (deceased). James and Isabel married on 15 November 1779, at Brough Parish Church.
James is listed in the transcript as being a taylor and a labourer - I supsect, he was hard working and tried to get what work he could to feed his wife and seven children born between the years 1780 - 1793, Brough.
