He lived for most of his life in Edgefield county, South Carolina where he ran a country store and bought seed cotton. Late in life he moved to Chambers county, Alabama along with his brother Bill.
James married Tabitha Towles circa 1798 in South Carolina.1
James D. ABNEY and Tabitha Towles appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 17 November 1850 in Chambers County, Alabama. The household was listed as James Abney, 72 years old, a farmer, value of real estate $200; Tabitha Abney, age 72, and Elvira Abney, age 32. All three were born in South Carolina.1
