He came to his adopted country with his parents in 1885, who established their home on a farm near Havensville, Kansas. It was at his farm home, only three miles distance from there that he departed this life, on August 10, 1940.

Mr. Paulsen was christened at an early age in the German-Lutheran faith, but distance and modes of travel destined the family affiliation with the Methodist Church at Fairview, where at the time of its disbandment, he served as Deacon. During the past several years he has found comfort as a member of the First Congregational Church of Onaga. He was also a member and past master of the Fairview Grange.

On March 7. 1909 he chose as his partner, Hattie Thomas of Onaga. Their children, about whom they have built their home, are Nina Douglass, and Gladys Faust, of San Francisco, California, and Cecil Lewis of the home.

PAULSEN, GUSTAV (1936)

Gustav Paulsen was born in Holstein, Germany, February 14, 1879. He was christened at an early age in the German Lutheran faith, according to their ceremonial laws.

At the age of seven years he came with his parents and family to America and settled near the home in which he has resided for the past forty-three years. His achievement in his adopted country was a life well spent. He had gathered together such of the fruits of the land that his surroundings were comfortable, and much of his success was due to the faith he had in others. He didn’t aim to press his debtors and took great pleasure in extending leniency until a time that was less burdensome to them.

As a community worker and in the interest of public improvement you can truly say that he was ever ready to lend a hand. When he felt that he had done his allotted share, he made all funeral arrangements so that he would not leave more for others to do than was necessary. We must say he has done what he could.

He passed away September 25 th in St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, and leaves to mourn his death, one sister, Mrs. Dora McDonald, of Havensville and two brothers, William and Henry of Onaga, his nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and also many friends.

A Prayer

Fountain of Mercy! Whose pervading eye can look within and read what passes there, accept my thoughts for thanks; I have no words. My soul, o’erfraught with Gratitude, rejects the aid of language – Lord! Behold my Heart.

He was faithful and true to his God, to himself, to his moral and spiritual ideals, and to his friends and fellow men. His love for his wife and children was great and sincere. His joy and happiness in his home was unlimited. He worked with his heart and hands to make it so, and here he found the love and quiet that he desired. His thoughts and his heart were pure. “Purity lives and derives its life solely from the Spirit of God.” “He believed that the wonders of nature, and the mystery and beauty of human life itself all showed the power and love of the Creator.” In contemplation of created things, by steps we may ascend to God,” He was kind and good, moderate in everything he did, generous and just. “The generous who is always just and the just who is always generous, may, unannounced, approach the throne of Heaven.” The impetuous current of Time carries all mankind onward and Heaven collects within its capacious heart whatever is pure and good.

PETERSON, LUELLA BLANCHE ADAMS (NO DATE)

Luella Blanche Adams, daughter of Oscar and Georgia Anna Adams, was born on a farm three miles north of Green, Kansas, on June 4, 1877. Here she grew to womanhood, attending the schools of that community and forming many friendships that have continued through the years. She was united in marriage to Elmer Peterson on November 5, 1902, and they established their home at Garrison, Kansas. Two daughters, Mildred and Irma, were born into this home both of whom survive their mother. In January of 1911 the family moved to Onaga where they lived until January of 1935, when Mr. and Mrs. Peterson moved to clay Center to make their home. Of a kind, cheerful, friendly disposition, taking an active interest in life and in other people, she soon won many admiring friends in this community, who today are grateful for the radiant influence of her life. And it was with deep sorrow that this community learned of her tragic death on Monday, April 20, 1936, in a train wreck near Topeka, Kansas. At the time of her death she was 58 years, 10 months and 16 days of age.

Those who feel most deeply this sudden bereavement are her husband, Elmer Peterson, of Clay Center; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Kolterman of Washington, Kansas and Mrs. Lawrence Ott of Richmond, California; three grandchildren, Duane and Irma Lou Kolterman, and Sandra Sue Ott; two brothers, W. F. Adams of Clay Center and V. C. Adams of Howard, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Alice Fox of Kansas City, Missouri, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a great host of friends.

For many years Mrs. Peterson had been a member of the Congregational Church at Onaga, and upon coming to Clay Center she together with Mr. Peterson, transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian Church here. Faithful in her attendance at its services, she was also active in other organizations of the church, being a member of the Westminster Sunday School Class, the Mite Society, and the Frances E. Stewart Chapter of the Westminster Guild. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was a past matron of Chapter No. 71 at Onaga and was also a member of the Royal Neighbors. Her presence will be sadly missed in all of these organizations, in each of which she had won herself a large place, but the greatest vacancy will be in the homes and hearts of her loved ones, with whom we sincerely sympathize today.

The funeral service was held Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Howard E. Hansen in charge. A quartet composed of Mrs. D. E. McIntosh, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Humfield and Sumner Vincent sang “No Night There” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Mrs. V. R. Vergades was the organist. The pallbearers were P. D. Hammel, L. W. Guest, J. D. Mack, H. L. Stevens, Perry Peterson, and Carl O. Johnson. Burial was made at Greenwood Cemetery, where the Clay Center Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was in charge.

Wreck of U.P. Motor Deals Death To One – Mrs. Elmer Peterson, An Old Onaga Resident, Is Killed, And Severe Injuries Are Received By Mrs. G. A. Mobely And Miss Pauline Englecamp, Both Of This City, Monday

Two persons were killed and six others were seriously injured late Monday afternoon when the Union Pacific’s passenger car on its Topeka-Lincoln motor train was derailed near Menoken. The toll was felt keenly in Onaga, for three of the victims were Onaga people. Mrs. Elmer Peterson lost her life in the wreckage, Mrs. G. A. Mobely suffered lacerations, and Miss Pauline Englecamp received scalp wounds and cuts.

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson had driven down from Clay Center, where they had resided for the past year, that morning, and Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Mobely had taken the train here at noon to go to Topeka on a shopping tour. They were returning to Onaga on the evening motor, when the traffic accident occurred, and Mr. Peterson was waiting at the depot to meet them.

The wreck apparently was caused by a heavy steel plate at the grade crossing over U. S. 40, this side of Menoken, becoming loose from the jarring of the train and getting under the wheel of the rear truck of the coach. The car left the track, turning over and was dragged several rods before the train was stopped. Mrs. Peterson was crushed beneath the seats as they piled up when the car overturned.

G. A. Benson, engineer of the train, said that he was not traveling over 25 miles an hour when the wreck occurred. P. S. McCune, veteran conductor, was in the overturned car, but was only slightly injured.

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson have resided in Onaga many years, Mr. Peterson being employed by the Union Pacific as fireman, and later as engineer on the L.K.&W. railway. After its disbandonment last year, they moved to Clay Center where Mr. Peterson went to firing on another railroad, but they still maintained their residence here.

It is a peculiar turn of fate that Mr. Peterson, in all his years of riding engines, should come through without a serious accident, and then to have his wife taken from him by means of a railroad train wreck.

Mrs. Peterson was of a very lovable character, and devoted much of her to church and organization work during the many years of her residence here. Her loss is felt keenly, not only by her excellent family, but by the community as a whole. She was born June 4, 1877, in Green, Kansas and spent her early life in Clay Center.

She leaves besides her grief-stricken husband, two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Kolterman, of Washington, Kansas and Mrs. Irma Ott, of Richmond, California and two brothers, W. F. and V. C. Adams, of Howard, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held Friday at Clay Center.

The deep sympathy of the many friends of the Petersons goes out to them in their tragic loss.

Both Mrs. Mobely, whose husband is a telegraph operator at the depot here, and Miss Englecamp have recovered have recovered from their terrifying experience without ill effect, and have returned to their homes.
