See Emma Louise Kolterman under “K”.
Elizabeth White was born February 18, in Cass County, Michigan. She was the fourth child of a family of ten children.
With her mother she went from her native state first to Illinois, then to Iowa and came later to Kansas, arriving in the America City neighborhood in 1858. Here she met Ephriam McKee who also had moved from Ohio to Kansas. Following their marriage January 6, 1861, they spent many years on their farm two and one half miles north of Havensville. Here they toiled and saved, enduring the hardships incident to pioneer life.
To them were born three children: Thomas McKee of Havensville; Mrs. Rosa L. Colwell of Manhattan; and a daughter, Anna, who died in infancy. The grandchildren are Harold McKee of San Francisco, California; Hazel McKee of Havensville; Beatrice McKee of Cleveland, Ohio; Gerald Colwell of Henrietta, Oklahoma; Evelyn Colwell of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Leila Colwell of Elmira, New York; and Garnet Colwell of Manhattan.
Mrs. McKee and her husband left the farm in 1910, coming to Havensville, where they lived happily until the death of her husband March 18, 1923.
For the first three years after the death of her companion she spent a portion of each year with her daughter in Manhattan, but for the last five years she has lived continuously in the home of her son in this city. In this home her comfort and her happiness were given first consideration by every member of the household. To Miss Hazel who has given her such tender care and devotion these years, no sacrifice seemed too great if thereby life was made happier for that one who is now gone from us. The presence in the homes of her children was an inspiration because of her kindness, patience, and interest. Like a true mother she shared their joys and sorrows. It was her custom to sit by the window and wave a greeting to those of her friends who passed that way.
For some time she had felt weary and oftimes expressed a desire to lay aside this life and be at rest. Seemingly her wish that her last illness be of short duration was granted. Retiring as usual Sunday evening her spirit slipped away in the early morning hours of September 14, 1931, and a life of 97 years, 6 months, and 27 days was brought to a close.
Besides the children and grandchildren already named she leaves one brother, George White of Pawnee City, Oklahoma.

The good doctor was driving to Soldier between 11 and 11:30 on Sunday morning, December 11, when his car overturned into a 10-foot ditch about 1 ¾ miles west of Soldier. The car turned over twice and pinned him underneath with the door hut on one leg, making him helpless. One leg was broken in three places, one arm broken, a head injury and many internal injuries. He lay suffering for about 30 minutes before he was discovered by Paul Tolin, who was driving by and saw the car. Paul remained with the doctor until help came. An ambulance from Holton hospital took the doctor to the hospital where he passed away at 3:00 p.m. the same day. He left many, many sad hearts because of his suffering and departure. May we all consider it a blessing he did not suffer longer.

KILLED ON HIGHWAY NO. 40 – Dr. Karl S. McGrew in Accident West of Silver Lake – “Don’t worry if I’m a little late getting back – I’m not forgetting that tomorrow is our wedding anniversary,” Kr. Karl S. McGrew, 44, dentist, told his wife, Nettie Taylor McGrew, when he left his home in Onaga Thursday morning.
Early today, the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, Dr. McGrew’s body was found near his wrecked car on highway No. 40 about two and a half miles west of Silver Lake. His neck was broken. According to Dr. H. L. Clark, coroner, his body had been hurled thru the top of his coupe and was about 40 feet in front of the car which was almost demolished.
Doctor McGrew’s body and wrecked car was found by Earl E. Estet and J. H. Lawrence, of Independence in a ditch beside the highway. Marks in the soil indicated that the car, a Roosevelt 8, had overturned twice. Estet and Lawrence called Dr. Clark, who with Bill Frey, deputy sheriff, went to the scene of the accident. The coroner said Dr. McGrew apparently had been dead less than an hour. He sent the body to Shellabarger’s undertaking establishment. There were no indications that the body had been robbed.
