KROUSE, BESSIE (NO DATE)

Mrs. C. L. Krouse Dies Unexpectedly—A stroke of Apoplexy Results In Untimely Death Of Wife Of Our State Senator—Mrs. Chas. L. Krouse passed away very unexpectedly from a stroke of apoplexy, last Monday evening, and her going has spread a wave of sadness over the entire community. It is hard to understand why a woman of such extraordinary character and friendliness must be taken in the prime of life. Mrs. Krouse gave much time and energy to community affairs. For many years she has taken an active part in the Royal Neighbor lodge, and has held office from time to time in the county organization. She was superintendent of the Fine Arts department of the Pottawatomie County Fair, year after year. She was a hearty worker in the Eastern Star Lodge and also belonged to several ladies clubs of the community. Her place in the community life will be mighty hard to fill.

She leaves to carry on a grief-stricken husband who was called home from his work in the state senate, and one son, Gail, who is a member of this year’s senior class of the Onaga Rural High School. To them the heart of the community goes out in sympathy.

Bessie Krouse, the daughter of O. P. and Anna Crumbaker, was born at Onaga, Kansas on April 30, 1884 and passed away February 7, 1933, at her home in Onaga, being 48 years, 10 months and 20 days old.

She was married to Charles L. Krouse on March 5, 1905. To this union was born one son, Gail.

She leaves to mourn, besides her husband and son, her father, O. P. Crumbaker, and one brother Earl, both of whom reside in Denver, Colorado, together with many friends.

With her family, she united with the Congregational Church and was a loyal worker in the Ladies Aid society of that church.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church, yesterday afternoon at two o’clock, in charge of the pastor, Rev. J. H. Cone. The church was filled to overflowing and the floral offerings were very beautiful. The business houses of the city were closed during the funeral hour. Interment was made in the Onaga Cemetery.

Leonard J., Arthur H. and Ida Nellie preceded him in death. His wife, Sarah Elizabeth, passed away on November 5, 1933.

Mr. Krouse lived a unique and unusual life. He knew life in the primitive as well the modern. He left his home in New Jersey when a small lad, coming “west” as it was known then, but Missouri and Kansas as called now, and stopped at what is now Baxter Springs, Kansas. He joined the militia and played his part during the border warfare between Missouri and Kansas. The events and principal characters of this time were all known by him personally. After Kansas became a state and the Civil War closed, he walked to Omaha, Nebraska. He drove a team of oxen hauling freight from Omaha to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He also freighted from Cheyenne to Salt Lake City, Utah, hauling material for the Mormon temple. While in this occupation he became acquainted with the various tribes of Indians and learned their language and customs, making himself known as the Indians’ white friend. He was the Indians in peace and also when on the war path.

Tiring of life at Salt Lake City, he went to the gold fields in Nevada. Carson City, Virginia City and Goldfield, Nevada were all familiar places to him. At one time he owned mines at Virginia City. Later he returned to Kansas, settling in Neosho County. It was here that he met and married Sarah Elizabeth Winstead. One child was born at Chanute, Kansas.

In 1874 the family came to Pottawatomie County, settling near Belvue. He and his brother, Lorenzo (Bub) drove their herd of cattle, and the family traveled in a covered wagon. The family lived near Belvue two years, then moved to the Cross farm north of Onaga. It was while farming the Cross farm that we had the grasshopper invasion. His team became so poor that it was necessary to use a pitchfork to urge the horses to go. Later he bought a farm in Vienna Township where he resided until 1901 when he moved to Onaga.

He leaves to mourn his death three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Charley and a son, Gale, of the home address, Walter and family, of Miami, Florida, and Ada Sidell and family of Wichita, Kansas.
