William G. Honig, oldest son of the late Frederick and Wilhelmine Hartwich Honig, was born January 4, 1873 at the old Honig home 4 miles north of Onaga. He was an active and faithful member of his church all his life, serving for more than twenty years on the board of Christian education, giving ample proof of his fine Christian character, especially of his faith and love to his Lord and His Church. He was a quiet, sincere child of God, honored and respected by all his fellowmen.

Three years later they retired permanently, staying with a niece, Miss Lydia Brunkow, for two years, when in the spring of 1951, they acquired the F. W. Kolterman home in Duluth and lived there until recently. In October 1951 the aged couple were permitted to celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary with all their children and grandchildren.

Last fall he began to fail in health so that it was necessary for him to submit to an operation at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. After the sudden passing of his dear wife four months ago, he gradually became weaker and Saturday evening, May 18 1957 at 7:40 p.m. he fell asleep peacefully at the home of the Roland Honig’s.

His pastor, in one part of the funeral sermon said: “I shall miss him as a careful listener and constant attendant at the church service. He was always present when able. I shall miss his warm handclasp and kind words to me at the door when leaving the church. We will miss him in the home, church, G.A.R. and lodge”. He attended the watch-night-service, December 31,1914, and gave a very beautiful and significant testimony. Mr. and Mrs. Honsted were perfectly united in their Christian faith. They adopted two children, a brother and sister, the sister having died several years ago. The adopted daughter was the wife of James Arganbright, residing nine miles southwest of Onaga. The adopted son, O. V. Honsted, has grown to manhood and is living in California.

The deceased was a member of a family of eight children – five brothers and three sisters. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him to the land of rest. The only sister, Mrs. L. C. Carley, of Westmoreland, and the only brother living, the Rev. D. F. Honsted, and the latter’s wife of Hiawatha, were here at the time of their brother’s death. Other relatives who attended the funeral were: S. B. Gilliland, a brother of the widow, and J. Tomlinson, a brother-in-law, both of Ohio.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church Monday afternoon after a brief service at the home. The pastor, Rev. Evans, took for his text 1 John 3:2, “It doth not yet appear what we shall be. But we know that when He shall appear we shall be like Him. For we shall see him as He is.” The Masons took charge after the pastor’s sermon, their ritual services being attractive, and impressive. At the grave the Sons of Veterans, held a brief ritualistic service, after which “taps” were sounded over the grave and the final benediction pronounced by Rev. Evans. Interment was given in the Onaga Cemetery. The Masons, as usual, showed great kindness to the deceased and offered to assist the family in any way to make the burden lighter. The G.A.R. and Sons of Veterans, and other friends and neighbors were attentive and kind. The family has the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
