Mr. Haughawout was one of the originators of the Pottawatomie County Fair Association, and for 27 years has devoted his time and efforts as secretary of that organization in furthering its advancement. About 12 years ago he was instrumental in organizing The State Association of Kansas Fairs and was its first president. At the time of his death he was a director from the 4 th district and also a member of the legislative committee of this state association of fairs. He was a charter member of the M.W.A., in Onaga, and through all the years of its existence has had a part in carrying on the work of that order, being Consul at the time of his death. He has long been an active member of the Odd Fellow lodge and also of the Royal Neighbors.

He was never happier than when wielding the drumstick in the local band, starting his bass drum career in the first band ever organized in Onaga and continuing as such until his death.

He was a member of the Congregational Church and also the sons of Veterans lodge. He served as fire chief of the Onaga fire department for many years, and took an active interest in the state fire department organization.

During his newspaper career, which covered thirty-three years, he was active in politics, serving as Republican central committeeman in 1915, at which time he was appointed as a delegate to the national convention in Chicago.

His whole heart and interest was in his home and his children. Nothing was too good for them, and his interest in their progress in life was felt keenly by each of them.

He leaves to mourn his loss, all the members of the immediate family: one sister, Mrs. Carrie Moody, of Arcadia, California; his step-mother, Mrs. Julia Haughawout of Santa Ana, California, and one half-sister, Mrs. Luella Kirk, of Carthage, Missouri and a host of friends.

The funeral services, conducted at the home Saturday afternoon, by Rev. J. H. Cone, were simple but beautiful and impressive. “Lead Kindly Light” and “Sometime We’ll Understand” were sung by Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Grutzmacher, Miss Hazel Gurtler and Mr. Lloyd Mumaw, with Mrs. Alice Miller at the piano. The remains were laid to rest beside his mother in the Onaga Cemetery.

A Few Excerpts From Friends

Senator Arthur Capper: It was with genuine regret that I learned of the death of Mr. Haughawout. He was one of my oldest and most valued friends. The state loses a most useful citizen in his passing.

E.O. Hallock, Post Office Inspector In Charge: Mr. Haughawout was a man of excellent character and stood high in the esteem of the postal officials who had come in contact with him.

George Harmon: It seems to me just like I had lost a member of the family because he and I worked together in the State Association of Fairs matters so many years.

Orman L. Miller: I have long had a sincere admiration for your father, though due to my reticences he never knew it. My first recollection of him goes back over a quarter of a century when I used to bring him the high school notes, and from that time on I always found him fair, considerate and unfailingly genuine.

K. D. Doyle, in The Wamego Reporter: It was with much sorrow that we learned of the death and burial of our life long friend, Clarence (Pete) Haughawout. We know that his hometown, Onaga, never properly appreciated that fine man. His life was so interwoven with the growth and improvement of Onaga that his life history for the past forty or more years is the history of Onaga.

We knew him as a newspaper man, a volunteer fireman, a Woodman, an Odd Fellow, a “State Guard” in war time, a booster for the Onaga fa*** ball, for the high school and everything worth-while for Onaga. ***munity or the county. The only time we ever disagreed was over a road proposition we were interested in (which the commissioners didn’t want to build) and which Pete helped to kill. But he was big enough to acknowledge he was wrong and made a mistake.

We’ll miss “Pete”. Someday Onaga will understand and appreciate all he did for that town. Loyal to his town, his state, his friends – “Pete” is sincerely mourned. We extend the sympathy of the editor’s family and the community. May he rest in peace.
