GOODMAN, RAYMOND (ONAGA HERALD, 18 NOV 1999)

Raymond Goodman, 94, Topeka, formerly of Wheaton, died Thursday, November 11, 1999 at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Goodman farmed until 1945, and then worked for a few years for Kufahl Hardware in Wheaton. He also owned and operated the Goodman Grocery Store in Wheaton for six years and he was a substitute letter carrier for 38 years. He was postmaster of Wheaton from 1960 to 1970 and had 48 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service when he retired in 1970.

He was born April 4, 1905 at Wheaton, the son of Josepheus Loring and Anna Eades Goodman. He graduated from Wheaton High School in 1923 and was a member of the 1923 Kansas State Championship basketball team. He lived most of his life in the Wheaton community before moving to Topeka in 1976.

Mr. Goodman was a member of Wheaton Congregational Church and attended Seabrook Congregational United Church of Christ in Topeka. He served on the Wheaton School Board for many years and signed the high school diplomas for all five of his children. He also was a member of the Retired Postmasters.

He married Gladys Leta Founds on June 16, 1926 in Westmoreland. She survives.

Other survivors include, four sons, Bob Goodman and Wendell Goodman both of Topeka, Kenneth Goodman of Overland Park, and Phillip Goodman of Noblesville, Indiana; a daughter, Sharon Ann McLaughlin of Kerrville, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. Monday, at Davidson Funeral Chapel in Topeka. Graveside services, under the direction of the Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton, were at 3 p.m. in the Wheaton Cemetery.

GENDRE, FLOYD L. (ONAGA HERALD)

Floyd Lester Gender, 83, a resident of Los Lunas, New Mexico for the past four years, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at his home.

He was born December 6, 1915 in Laclede, Kansas, the son of Henry and Lillie Gendre.

He was a graduate of Onaga High School and farmed in the Onaga community for several years before becoming employed by the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1980. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and Henderson, Nevada where they lived for 16 years.

Floyd was a member and Past Master of Onaga Lodge #188 AF&AM; a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge AF&AM at Henderson, Nevada; the Scottish Rite Bodies, Topeka, Kansas, Zelzah Shrine, Las Vegas, Nevada; a member and Past Patron of Order of Eastern Star #71, Onaga, Kansas; a member of Jessamine Order of Eastern Star #45, Belen, New Mexico, and First Presbyterian Church of Belen.

He was married May 10, 1936 to Phylis Eustis of Onaga. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Ankenman, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sondra Wade, Los Lunas, New Mexico; a sister, Irene Tessendorf, Onaga; six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Monday, November 15, at First Presbyterian Church, Belen, New Mexico. Masonic graveside services were held at Mr. Moriah Lodge in Henderson, Nevada.

GEYER, MAY B. (ONAGA HERALD)

May B. Geyer, 97, Onaga, died Wednesday, September 30, 1998, at the nursing home.

She was born July 1, 1901, on a farm near Carson, Iowa the daughter of Charles C. and Ida Mae Sivers Perry. She was graduated from Norton High School in Norton and Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Mrs. Geyer was a primary school teacher for 20 years in Ross township, Indiana before retiring in 1967. She moved from Indiana to Onaga in 1982.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Merrillville, Indiana, Chapter O of the PEO Sisterhood in Gary, Indiana, the Indiana State Retired Teachers Association and the Lake County Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

She married Fred Harry Geyer on October 2, 1927 in Chicago. He died July 10, 1962. She was also preceded in death by two sisters: Mabel Hulbert and Olive Dedrick, and two brothers, Leslie Perry and Archie Perry.

Survivors include one daughter, Loma Geyer Davies Silcott, Rapid City, South Dakota; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial was in St. Clere Cemetery.

GOODRICH, LARRY WILLIAM (ONAGA HERALD)

Larry William Goodrich, 45, Walsenburg, Colorado, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at University Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He had suffered a massive brain aneurysm September 4, 1999.

Mr. Goodrich was born June 7, 1954 at Oakland Naval Hospital, Oakland, California. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1972. He had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad Company as a master heavy equipment operator and at the time of his death was employed by a recycling company in Denver.

He is survived by his wife Judy Goodrich of the home, his mother, Joye Platt, Onaga; sisters, Julie Platt, Mason City, Iowa, JoLynn Barnes, Onaga, Jayne Jepson, Soldier, Jami Platt, Aurora, Colorado and numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. October 30, at New Hope Lutheran Church.

GABRIELSON, ERNEST G.

Funeral services for Mr. Ernest G. Gabrielson, 79, of Onaga, were at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Congregational Church in Onaga with burial in the Neuchatel Cemetery. Mr. Gabrielson died Friday, July 25, at Golden Acres Nursing Home where he was admitted Wednesday. He had been in ill health for a number of months and a hospital patient much of that time.

He was born August 3,1895 at Holmsted, Sweden and came to the United States when he was about 20 years old. Before his retirement, he farmed in the Centralia community.

He was a member of the Congregational Church at Onaga and the White Pigeon Grange.

Survivors include his wife, the former Elsie Watters, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Nina O’Shea of Mayetta; four brothers, Gene Gabrielson of Frankfort, and Otto, Eric, and Kurt Gabrielson all of Sweden; two sisters, Nina and Anna, both of Sweden; two grandsons, and one great-grandson.

GEYER, WILLIAM S. (6-1971)

Havensville – William S. Geyer, 84, rural Havensville, died at his home Friday.

He was born February 5, 1887 south of Havensville. He was a farmer and stockman, and had lived all of his life in the Fairview community, south of Havensville.

He was a 50-year member of the Fairview Grange, American Legion Post No. 85 at Onaga, and a veteran of World War I.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ella Geyer, of the home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial will be in St. Clere Cemetery. Tessendorf Mortuary, Onaga, is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Mr. William S. Geyer, 84, of rural Havensville were at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial was in the St. Clere Cemetery.

Mr. Geyer died Friday at his home. He had been in ill health for several years.

Born February 5, 1887, south of Havensville he had lived all of his life in the Fairview community. He was a farmer and stockman.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion Post No. 85 at Onaga and a 50-year member of the Fairview grange.

Survivors include his wife, Ella, of the home.

GILSDORF, HENRY G.

Henry G. Gilsdorf, 74, Onaga, died Wednesday, April 21, 1993, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Gilsdorf was a farmer and stockman all his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre and was wounded in action.

He was born April 9, 1919, at Oberlin, to Will and Emma Cody Gilsdorf.

Mr. Gilsdorf was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga and Onaga Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7772 and Disabled American Veterans.

He was married to Mary Catherine DeFries August 29, 1949 in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Patricia Jane Cox, Garnett, Sally Ann Miller, Onaga, and Mary Angela Ames, Havensville; four sons, Henry Leon Gilsdorf, Downers, Grove, Illinois, Steven Ray Gilsdorf, address unavailable, Robert Eugene Gilsdorf, Holton, and John Wayne Gilsdorf, Mesa, Washington; three sisters, Carol Keef, Shawnee, Wilma McPherson, Mitchell, Inc., and Phyllis Miller, Independence, Missouri, six brothers, Kenneth Gilsdorf, Shawnee, William B. Gilsdorf, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Myron Gilsdorf, Lanagan, Missouri, Joseph Gilsdorf, Laramie, Wyoming, Paul Gilsdorf, San Diego, California; and Jack Gilsdorf, Slymar, California and 16 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was a t10 a.m. Saturday in St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.

GALLOWAY, RAY

Ray Galloway, 80, Onaga, died Wednesday, November 17, 1993 at his home.

He was born December 25, 1912, at Otis, the son of George Jacob and Lizzie Rein Galloway. He attended Brick School south of Burdett.

Mr. Galloway went to Denver in 1934 to work at his uncle’s service station and later was a driver on the Riss Truck Line, Kansas City to Denver route, several years, then owned his own Conoco station in Denver. He moved to Onaga in 1943 to purchase a brother’s Conoco service station. He retired in 1972.

Mr. Galloway was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Onaga, Onaga Lions Club and was Pottawatomie County Republican Precinct Committeeman.

He was married to Margaret Horton in 1934 in Joplin, Missouri. She died in 1971. He was married to Sylvia Hartwick, January 6, 1973. She died November 29, 1992.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Gatterman and Mabel Payne, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a stepdaughter, Cindy Falk, Onaga; two stepsons, David Hartwich, Wamego, and Stanley Hartwich, Onaga; and 11 step-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 20, in the Onaga Area Community Center. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.

GODLOVE, ISAAC AARON

Isaac Aaron Godlove, eighth child of Henry and Minerva Godlove, was born April 5, 1874, and passed away January 17, 1947 at the age of 72 years, 9 months, and 11 days. He was born and grew to manhood on the farm home near Onaga, Kansas. It was here on February 21, 1906 that he was married to Nellie Pitcher and this was their home until 1917, when they moved to their home northeast of Havensville, which has since been their home.

To this union six children were born: Emory Leonard, who was accidentally killed when three years of age; Mrs. Edith Lorena Brenner of Denison, Kansas, Isaac Earl of Goff, Mrs. Evelyn Darling Manchester of Fairview, and Eva Zelma and Nellie Lucile of Topeka.

Besides his wife and five children he is survived by one brother, John Godlove of Bishop, California; five grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors who share deeply with the family their great sorrow.

Funeral services were held at the Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga and at the Methodist Church in Havensville on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Walter C. Green, pastor of the Havensville Methodist Church. Mrs. Patrick and Mrs. Marcoux sang three beautiful hymns with Cressie Eddy at the piano. Pallbearers were Paul Ressinger, L. L. McKee, Ross Manuel, L. H. Acker, Tom Rash and D. O. Nicholas. Burial was in the family lot in Regar Cemetery.

GLANNON, HELEN G.

Helen Gertrude Glannon, 89, Topeka, died Wednesday, August 2, 1995.

Mrs. Glannon and her husband owned and operated Glannon’s Service Station in Wheaton before moving to Topeka in 1960.

She was born November 1, 1905, in Wheaton, the daughter of Martin and Katherine McGrath Walsh. She was graduated from Wheaton High School in 1925.

Mrs. Glannon was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka.

She was married to Bernard J. Glannon on June 22, 1932. He died August 23, 1988. Three grandchildren also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Bernard d. “Bernie” Glannon, Merriam; a daughter, Helen Darlene Walsh, Topeka; two brothers, Louis Walsh, Mission, and Ray Walsh, Shawnee Mission; three sisters, Christine Bennett, Topeka, and Mary Murphy and Angie Brown, both of Kansas City, Missouri, nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 5, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

GALLOWAY, EDWIN

Services for Mr. Edwin Galloway, Choudrant, Louisiana, were at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 3, 1989, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, Louisiana; with Rev. Hulen Warren, Jr. and Rev. Jerry Whitman officiating. Burial was in Beulah Methodist Church Cemetery near Choudrant with Masonic graveside rites under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.

Mr. Galloway died Thursday, August 31, 1989 at Ft. Francis Medical center after a short illness. Mr. Galloway was a retired electrician and a resident of Choudrant for the past two years. He was a member of Choudrant United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry E. Galloway, Wheaton, Illinois and Larry L. Galloway, Shawnee, Kansas; two daughters, Judy Galloway and Betty Fontanoe, both of Monroe, Louisiana; one brother, Raymond Galloway, Onaga, Kansas; three sisters, Helen Gatterman and Mabel Payne, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marie Lattimer, Hutchinson, Kansas and three grandchildren.

GALLOWAY, MARGARET (26 DECEMBER 1971)

Mrs. Margaret Galloway, 55, of Onaga died Sunday at Community Hospital here after a long illness. She underwent kidney surgery at a Topeka hospital April 1, 1968 and was released. She had been hospitalized at various times since.

She was born April 21, 1916, at Mesquite, Texas and had been a resident of Onaga since 1941. She was an active member of the Onaga Congregational Church and the Ladies Guild of the Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Galloway, of the home; a sister, Mrs. Bonnie Gerner of Sheldon, MO., and an uncle, Mr. Clyde Horton, Onaga.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Congregational Church. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Weston, Missouri.

GARRETT, GEORGE W.

George W. Garrett, only son of J. W. and Amanda M. Garrett, was born at the family home 2 miles northeast of Onaga, Kansas on August 11, 1874, and passed away at the Moser Hospital in Holton, Kansas where he had been a patient since December 15, 1951 on November 12, 1952, at the age of 78 years, and 3 months.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 17 years as a material clerk, and retired in 1928 because of ill health, coming to Onaga to make his home with his sister, Mrs. Netta Force, until her illness last December when he was taken to the Holton Hospital.

He attended the Nazarene Mission while they had services here, and later attended the Calvary Baptist Church. He was a member of A.F.&A.M. and Eastern Star, the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodges of Onaga.

His parents, one brother and 5 sisters preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Doris Talbott and Mrs. Vera Witham, of Onaga, and a number of nieces and nephews.

GAUME, AUGUST ALBERT

August Albert Gaume, son of Sarah and Peter Gaume, was born on a farm in Nemaha County, Kansas on April 12, 1879 and passed away at his home in Onaga, Kansas on September 27 th, 1939 at the age of 60 years, 5 months and 15 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Belle Hoover on May 18, 1899 and to this union was born one son, Meryl, who with his mother, survive.

Mr. Gaume grew to manhood in this community, went into business here, and was one of Onaga’s most successful and popular businessmen through all the years following. His friends could always count on him for advice and assistance in their difficulties, and his friends were legion. In the progress of the city, he was always ready to lend a hand and spent much time and effort in the city’s welfare.

He was active in his business up until about a year ago, when ill health forced him to turn over the responsibility of his grocery store and market to his son, Meryl, who now carries on the business. His untimely death will be felt keenly among his family, his friends and his fellow businessmen.

Besides his wife and son, he is also survived by three brothers, Frank of Hamilton, Missouri, John of Topeka, and Louis of Onaga; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Shannon of Hawk Springs, Wyoming and Mrs. Lucy Cunningham, of Onaga, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral services. One sister, Elizabeth, preceded him in death in 1916.

Funeral services were conducted at the Onaga Catholic church on Friday morning with Father Schraeder officiating. The business houses of the city were closed during the services, in tribute. Interment was in the Coal Creek Cemetery.

GAUME, SARAH BELLE (1970)

Mrs. Sarah belle Gaume, 89, died Saturday, October 10, in a Topeka hospital where she had been a patient since September 17, suffering broken hip. She had been a resident of Golden Acres Nursing Home here for the last five years.

The daughter of Henry and Melinda Eytchison Hoover, she was born October 28, 1880, near Onaga and spent her life in the Onaga community. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at Onaga.

She was preceded in death in 1939 by her husband, August Gaume.

Survivors are a son, Meryl P. Gaume, and his wife, Velma.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent de Paul’s Catholic Church at Onaga, with burial in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery at Coal Creek. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Monday at Tessendorf Mortuary.

GAUME, FRANK JEROME

Frank Jerome Gaume, born October 15, 1881 in Neuchatel, Kansas passed away unexpectedly following a stroke at his home in Hamilton, Missouri, Thursday, June 20, 1946. He was the son of Sarah and Peter Gaume of Onaga, Kansas.

He was married in Seneca, Kansas to Mary A. Kearns in 1906 who preceded him in death three months ago. He is survived by his children: Miss Eilene Gaume of Kansas City; Edward Evelyn Stutz, Jack and Lester of Hamilton; Robert E. of the United States Army; five grandchildren; also two brothers, John of Topeka, Kansas and Lewis of Onaga, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Shannon of Tarrington, Wyoming and Mrs. Lucy Cunningham of Topeka, Kansas.

Out of town visitors were Mike Kearns of Seneca, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. John Gaume of Topeka, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. William Gaume, Miss Rose Kearns, Mr. and Mrs. William Schofield and family and Mr. and Mrs. James Dickinson and family, all of Kansas City, Kansas; and Mrs. Joe Gibson of Hartford, Connecticut who will remain for a visit with the children.

GAUME, LOUIS (20 DECEMBER 1962)

Funeral Mass for Louis Gaume, 78, was held at 9:30 Friday morning at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga, with the Reverend John Croughwell officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the Coal Creek community.

Mr. Gaume was born April 11, 1884 near Onaga, the son of Peter and Sarah Becker Gaume, and spent his entire life in this community. He passed away at his home Saturday, December 15. Death was attributed to acute coronary thrombosis.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, August, John, Frank and Elizabeth Gaume and Lucy Cunningham. Survivors include one sister, Mary Shannon of Hawk Springs, Wyoming and 12 nephews and five nieces.

GAUME, MERYL P. (1975)

Meryl P. Gaume, 72, Onaga, died Wednesday at a Topeka hospital where he was admitted February 25. He had a heart ailment.

He was born March 28, 1902 at Onaga where he lived all his life. He operated the Gaume Market from 1928 to 1960 when he retired.

He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both at Onaga.

He was married to Velma Dodds on October 6, 1925 at Onaga. She survives.

Prayer services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s (Coal Creek) Cemetery, north of Onaga.

GENNETT, JAMES SR. (1983)

James Gennett, Sr. Dies at Hospital Here – James R. Gennett, Sr., 78, Onaga, died Wednesday, March 30, at Community Hospital in Onaga where he had been a patient for several weeks.

He was born December 10, 1904 near Morganville in Clay County, the son of James R. and Anna Wilkerson Gennett.

Mr. Gennett served in the Navy and later worked for 45 years for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired in December 1969.

He was a member of Onaga Lodge No. 188 AF&AM.

He was married to Mildred Purves August 10, 1929, at Clay Center. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, James R. Gennett, Jr., Onaga; five sisters, Mrs. Bess Mellies, Mrs. Mary Finley and Mrs. Myrtle Purves, all of Morganville, Mrs. Ruth Eckert, Adrian, Michigan and Mrs. Pearl Hess, Wakefield; two brothers, Louis Ennett, Morganville, and Don Gennett, Clay Center; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Congregational Church in Onaga, with burial in Onaga Cemetery.

GAUME, SARA

Mrs. Sara Gaume passed away Friday afternoon, February 15, 1929 at 2 o’clock at her home in Onaga, Kansas. She had been failing for about four months.

Sara Gaume was born in South Bend, Indiana. Her maiden name was Becker. She came with her parents, to Kansas when she was 20 years old and lived near Centralia, Kansas.

She was married to Peter Gaume, who recently preceded her in death on May 4, 1878. To this union were born eleven children, five of whom preceded them in death. The living children are: August and Lewis Gaume and Mrs. Lucy Cunningham, of Onaga; Frank Gaume of Hamilton, Missouri, John Gaume of Topeka; and Mrs. Mary Shannon of Wolcott, Wyoming.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gaume settled on a farm on French Creek. After a few years they moved to Centralia, then back to the farm, then to Onaga, where they resided until death. The funeral services were held at the Coal Creek Catholic Church on Monday morning and interment was in the Coal Creek cemetery.

GEYER, ANNA MARIE REINHARDT

Anna Marie Reinhardt was born on August 25, 1855 in Seneca Falls, New York. She was the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Reinhardt. She had 3 brothers and 4 sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She passed away October 25, 1950 at the age of 95 years and 2 months.

At the age of 9 she came with her parents to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she lived until her marriage to Andrew Geyer. In the fall of 1880 they came to Kansas in a covered wagon and homesteaded the farm on which she lived until February 5, 1945 when she had the misfortune to fall and break her hip. Since that time she has been an invalid and spent practically all her time in the Onaga hospital where she has received the best treatment the doctors, nurses and Ora were able to give her. She was the mother of eight children, five of whom are deceased, three at an early age. Two, John and Walter, after they had grown to manhood. Her husband passed away in June 1915. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Perry of Havensville and Mrs. Mary Dennis of Onaga, one son, Ora, of Onaga, four grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Although she had seen many hardships through the years, she was able to keep and manage the home for herself and Ora until she was 89 years old. She will be greatly missed by her family and a host of neighbors and friends who knew her as “Grandma” Geyer.

Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Tessendorf Chapel, in charge of Rev. Knapp. Burial was in the St. Clere Cemetery.

GILLETT, MARY HANNAH COCKREL

Mrs. Mary Gillett Dead – Mary Hannah Cockrel was born in **** county Missouri, October 31 *** and died at the Dechairo hospital in Westmoreland Thursday ****26 at the age of 88 years, five months, and five days.

When she was eight years old, she came to Kansas with her parents and always lived in Pottawatomie County since.

She was united in marriage to El*** *elass Gillett in the year of 1873. He preceded her in death in 1911. To this union were born nine children, four, Edith, Roscoe, Ora and **** have preceded her in death. *** and Roscoe died in infancy.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Fostoria and a life member of the Veritas Chapter of Westmoreland.

She leaves to mourn her departure, ** sons, Clark B., Percy A. and ** S. of Fostoria; Milo c. of Her*** and Lloyd R. of Laramie Wyoming. Eighteen grandchildren and **great grandchildren.

She was a faithful mother and was always ready to help others in sickness or distress.

Funeral services were held at the ***ria Methodist church at 3:30 ***afternoon. Interment was in Onaga Cemetery.

GENDRE, LILLIE MAYE

Mrs. Lillie Maye Gendre, 87, Wamego, died Friday, April 19, 1985 at a Westmoreland hospital where she was a patient the past two weeks.

She was born April 18, 1899, at Laclede, the daughter of William and Wilhelmina Tessendorf Nicklas, and was reared in Laclede.

Mrs. Gendre was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wamego, the Bridge of Love Circle at the church and Vermillion Extension Homemakers Unit.

She was married to Henry Gendre at Laclede on November 19, 1913. He died December 4, 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Irene Tessendorf, Wamego, a son, Floyd Gendre, Henderson, Nevada; two grandchildren, two stepgrandchilden; six great grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren, and eight stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Tessendorf Mortuary, Onaga. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.

GOBLE, BOBBY G.

Bobby G. Goble, 53, Onaga, died Monday, December 5, 1988, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

He was born June 28, 1935 in Knightstown, Indiana the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Goble. He graduated from Knightstown High School in 1953 and served with the U. S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.

Mr. Goble was a former Holton police officer and was the Onaga City Marshal until 1978, when he retired.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 400 in Topeka and the First Baptist Church in Holton.

He was married to Shirley Petree on July 5, 1964 in Holton. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Angela Goble, Onaga, and Dena Goble, Manhattan; four brothers, Richard Goble, address unavailable, Raymond Goble, Fortville, Indiana and Harold Goble and Ivan Goble, both of Knightstown, Indiana; and two sisters, Ruby Jackson, Alabama, and Phylis Butcher, Shirley, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, at the Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Military graveside services will follow at the Onaga Cemetery.

GAUGHAN, VICTOR (1978)

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Assumption Catholic Church for Victor Gaughan, 53, who was found dead Friday in his room at the Cottage Motel, 2111 N. Topeka. An autopsy was performed to determine cause of death, but results were unavailable Saturday.

He was born September 8, 1924, at Centralia, the son of William and Florence Gaughan, and lived in Topeka since 1969. He had been a farmer and a mail truck driver. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include four brothers, Gerard Gaughan, 1219 Glendale Drive, James Gaughan, San Lorenzo, California, Robert Gaughan, Leawood and Wilbur Gaughan, Phoenix, Arizona; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Lackey, Seneca, Mrs. Florence Boeding, Manhattan, and Mrs. Rita Campfield, San Jose, California.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in the Coal Creek Community south of Centralia.

Mr. Gaughan will lie in state from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brennan Funeral Home where rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday.

GENNETT, MILDRED M.

Mrs. Mildred Mary Gennett, 85, Onaga, died Thursday, November 17, 1988, at Golden Acres Nursing Home where she had lived the past four and one-half years.

She was born December 15, 1902 at Morganville, the daughter of James R. and Sarah C. Schooley Purves, and was graduated from Morganville High School in 1923.

She was married to James R. Gennett of Morganville on August 10, 1929, in clay Center. They moved to Onaga after they were married. He died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, James R. Gennett, Jr. Onaga; two granddaughters, and four great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 19, in Tessendorf Mortuary, Onaga. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.

GEYER, ELLA CLARA (5-27-1974)

Onaga – Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth, for Mrs. Ella Clare Geyer, 83, rural Havensville, who died here Monday in a hospital where she was admitted earlier the same day.

She was born April 18, 1891, near Onaga and spent most of her life in the Onaga and Havensville communities. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth, and was a charter member of the auxiliary of the American Legion at Onaga.

She was married to William S. Geyer, who died in June 1971.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Louise Hartwich, 1810 N. W. Fredith Lane, and Mrs. Marie Clark, 626 Jewell, both in Topeka.

Burial will be in St. Clere Cemetery north of Emmett. Tessendorf Mortuary of Onaga is in charge of arrangements.

GENDRE, CHARLES A. (10-1961)

Charles Albert Gendre, born on August 3, 1872 at Neuchatel Switzerland, died at Onaga, Kansas, on October 5, 1961 at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 2 days.

He came to this country when he was 19 years of age and made his home with the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cosandier at Neuchatel, Kansas until his marriage to Rosalie Anna Shali in the year 1895. To this union were born two sons, Henry and Paul who survive him; an adopted daughter, Dora, preceded him in death. His wife passed away on December 20, 1927.

He lived all of his adult life around the Neuchatel, Laclede, and Onaga communities and was engaged in farming until his failing health forced him to retire. In the year 1951 ****

GOINS, MARIE LYDIA

Services were at 2 p.m., Saturday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga for Mrs. Marie Lydia Goins, 87, Manhattan. She died Tuesday, January 8, 1991 at a Manhattan nursing home.

Mrs. Goins and her husband operated the Shamrock Café in Onaga many years.

She was born February 7, 1903 at Paola. She was adopted at 3 months of age by William and Amelia Hetzler of Onaga and grew up in the Onaga community. She had lived in Manhattan since 1977.

Mrs. Goins was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a founding member of the Lutheran Church at Leesville, Louisiana. She currently was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Manhattan.

She was married to George Goins December 25, 1927, at Kansas City, Kansas. Because of her husband’s health problems in later years they moved to Leesville where he died July 22, 1962.

Survivors include a niece and four nephews.

Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.

GEBHARDT, GERALD “JACK”

Gerald “Jack” Gebhardt, 85, Kanopolis, died Saturday, October 26, 1991 in a Salina hospital.

Mr. Gebhardt did custom combining from Texas to North Dakota for 60 years.

He was born September 3, 1906 in Winkler, the son of Charles L. and Emma K. Alexander Gebhardt.

He was married to Clara L. Mitchell February 21, 1931 in Green. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Dixie Kufahl, Onaga; a son, Gerry Gebhardt, Kanopolis; two sisters, Marjorie Clark, Junction City and Dorothy Mackenthun, Fairfax, Virginia; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, at Green Fancy Creek Cemetery near Green.

GOODMAN, FRANCES E.

Mrs. Frances E. Goodman, 85, Onaga, died Monday, April 11, 1988 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga.

She was born March 5, 1903 at Onaga the daughter of George and Mae Myers Grim. She formerly lived in Wheaton, Fostoria, and Holton and since 1986 had lived at the care home in Onaga.

Mrs. Goodman was a member of the Congregational Church in Wheaton.

She was married to Loring Goodman September 6, 1922 at Wheaton. He died in May 1973. A daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Bain, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Lyle Goodman, Wheaton; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Griffith, Topeka, and Mrs. Phyllis Morgan, Colorado Springs, a brother, Gene Grim, Hartford, Arkansas; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the Congregational Church in Wheaton. Burial was in the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery.

GALLOWAY, SYLVIA E.

Onaga – Sylvia E. Galloway, 71, Onaga, died Sunday, November 29, 1992 at her home.

She was born July 2, 1921 in Onaga, the daughter of Armand and Alice Vautravers Bonjour. She was graduated from Onaga High School in 1939. She attended Kansas State University in Manhattan a year.

Mrs. Galloway worked at the Onaga Garment Factory several years.

She was active in 4-H Club work in Onaga and served as project leader for art and clothing. She had served as a judge of art at county fairs in Washington, Shawnee, Wabaunsee and Marshall counties.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Onaga, Onaga Home workers, Extension Homemakers Unit, and Laclede Homemakers Independence Unit.

She was also a member of the Historical Societies of Pottawatomie County and Onaga, past treasurer of the Onaga community Center, and a member of the Onaga Hospital Auxiliary and the Pottawatomie County Republican Women’s Club.

She was the 1989 Kansas Beef Cook-Off Champion and represented Kansas at the National Beef Cook-Off in Portland, Oregon. She was a member of Artists Associated of Topeka, Inc. One of her drawings decorated the cover of a recent issue of the Trial Lawyers Journal.

She was married to Paul Hartwich August 10, 1940 in Onaga. He died July 25, 1972. She was married to Raymond Galloway January 6, 1973. He survives. A son, Lynn Hartwich, died September 13, 1986. Another son, Jerry Hartwich, died January 17, 1988.

Other survivors include a daughter, Cindy Falk, Onaga; two sons, David Hartwich, Wamego, and Stanley Hartwich, Onaga; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Onaga Community Center. Burial will be in Onaga Cemetery. Mrs. Galloway will lie instate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga where friends and relatives will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Onaga Area Community Center or to Calvary Baptist Church in Onaga.

GEYER, ALICE (1963)

Funeral services for Miss Alice Geyer, 78, of Onaga were held Wednesday afternoon, February 27, at 2:00 o’clock at the Congregational Church with the Rev. Robert E. Willliams officiating. Interment was in St. Clere Cemetery near Emmett.

Miss Geyer passed away Sunday night at Community Hospital here following a long illness. She was born January 4 1885 near Havensville and lived in that community for some time before moving to Onaga. For some time she ran a boarding house for teachers of the Onaga schools.

Her only survivor is a brother W. S. Geyer, and his wife, of rural Havensville.

GENNETT, JAMES R. JR.

James R. Gennett, Jr., 63, of Onaga, died Friday, February 28, 1997 at his home.

He was born July 14, 1933 in Onaga, the son of James R. and Mildred Purves Gennett. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1952.

After high school he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for two years. He then entered the United States Air Force where he was a jet aircraft mechanic with the Strategic Air Command, 55 th & 90 th P.M.S. 55 th SRW and FMS. He and his family were stationed at Forbes AFB in Topeka and Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska. He served numerous tours of duty around the world and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the air force in 1974, after serving over twenty years.

After his retirement from the air force he attended Kaw Area Vocational Technical School in Topeka where he studied Automobile Body Repair. He then owned and operated Jim’s Standard Service, worked at the Farmer’s coop, and later he and his wife managed the Prairie View apartments, all in Onaga.

He was a charter member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Onaga, American Legion Post No. 85, Onaga, and the Corvette Club at Topeka.

He married Donna Marten on March 4, 1956, at Duluth. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters: Connie Schwandt, Manhattan, and Tammy Handley, Onaga, and five grandchildren.

A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Tessendorf Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga. Burial with full military honors by McConnell AFT Honor Guard was at the Onaga cemetery. Honor Guard was at the Onaga Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Hope Lutheran Church or Parkinson’s Disease Research at the University of Kansas Medical Center, in care of the funeral home.

GEBHARDT, JULIUS LOUEY

Julius Louey Gebhardt was born on October 28, 1876 at Louisville, Kansas and departed this life at Onaga, Kansas on March 8, 1934 at the home of his niece, Mrs. Otto Brunkow.

He was the son of Henry Frederick and Louisa Gebhardt. He was reared at Onaga, Kansas, attended the Onaga school and grew to manhood here. He was a familiar figure upon the streets of Onaga, and was known by his many friends as a food worker. He was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of this city, his father having served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was with Sherman when he made his historical march to the sea. His father died in 1889 and his mother in 1905. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Bembe, of Onaga, and Mrs. Henry Adolph of Alma, Kansas. He united with the Methodist Church at about 15 years of age. He came to Onaga with his parents when he was nine years of age.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Otto Brunkow home, conducted by Rev. J. H. Cone, pastor of the Onaga Federated Church.

GEYER, GEORGE ADAM

George Adam Geyer was born at Columbus, Ohio on April 11, 1854. [This is difficult to read and could be 1864.] He died December 21, 1939 at his old farm home near Onaga, Kansas. He moved from Ohio to Black Hawk County, Iowa, at the age of 14 years. In 1880 he came to Kansas in a covered wagon to the home in which he lived until March 1929. The first farm was an 80-acre farm of virgin prairie.

He was married March 6, 1884 to Helen Strosnider. To this union were born three children: Alice, of Onaga, William S. of Havensville, and Fred II, of Gary, Indiana. Mrs. Geyer passed away on October 3, 1928. There is one grandchild, Loma Jean, five years old.

Mr. Geyer was a fine neighbor and friend and known as such to the many who have known him throughout his long life in this community. He was one of the pioneers who came early to Kansas and worked all his life to the end, that the West might be a better place to live. His character and courage will live after him.

Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Thomas Hinkle at the Congregational Church in Onaga at two o’clock, Sunday afternoon. Burial was in the St. Clere cemetery.

GARRETT, AMANDA M.

Amanda M. Cockrell was born February 1 st, 1847 in Clay County, Illinois and died at her home just east of Onaga, on Friday evening, April 12 th, 1912 aged 65 years, 2 months and 11 days.

Her parents moved to Cass county, Missouri when she was seven months old where she lived until 1862 when she removed with her parents to Kansas, locating in Pottawatomie County south of Onaga.

She was united in marriage to J. W. Garrett on November 12, 1865 locating on the present farm where they have lived since. To this union nine children were born, two dying in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Susan Pace, dying in 1900, aged 26 leaving an infant child. The surviving children are: Mrs. Rachel Bateman, Mrs. Mary Taylor, Miss Nettie Garrett, George W. Garrett, Mrs. Vera Witham, all of Onaga, and Mrs. Doris Talbott, of Havensville. There are also surviving, twenty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Besides the husband and father the deceased also leaves two sisters – Mrs. Sarah Fulton of Topeka and Mrs. Mary Gillett, of Fostoria, and two brothers – John and Cornelius Cockrell of Oklahoma.

The deceased had ever been blessed with good health until she was stricken with paralysis on April 3d last, two days later losing power of speech and being practically unconscious until her death.

She was a member of an organization known as “Primitive” or “Old School” Baptists which once existed in Havensville and of which she became a member in 1872, said organization being succeeded by the present Baptist organization there, and of which Mrs. Garrett was not a member. She had maintained her faith and hope in her Redeemer, however, expressing hearty assent to the thought suggested to her Friday, “Jesus has promised to be with us always, thus in sickness or in death as well as in life”. Mrs. Garrett had been a faithful wife and helpmeet in the nearly forty-seven years of married life, a good mother and a true friend. The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing relatives.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. J. L. Ayrault of the Baptist Church of this city, and interment was given in the Regar Cemetery.

GIBSON, ISAAC MCSHANE

I. M. Gibson, another octogenarian, passed away at his home in Onaga, Tuesday morning, at four score years and three, after a short illness.

Isaac McShane Gibson was born at Bluntsville, Indiana, October 16, 1851 and passed away at Onaga, Kansas June 11, 1935. He moved with his parents to this state in 1859, when eight years of age, making the trip with ox teams, and encountering many hardships, going through the drouth of 1860, making peace with the indians, then quite numerous here, and finding herds of buffalo roaming the plains.

At the age of 21 he took up a homestead, which later on was near the townsite of Onaga, and lived there until the time of his death. Mr. Gibson did the carpenter work on the first school house and the first Congregational Church built on Onaga.

He was united in marriage, March 15, 1874, to Addie Mabel Young, of Topeka, Kansas whose father came to Topeka in the early day when there were only two log cabins there. Mrs. Gibson preceded him to the great beyond nine years ago; also three children in infancy, Mabel, Harvey and Roy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Blanche G. Benton of Onaga, and Mrs. Gladys L. Stanchfield, of Los Angeles, California. Also surviving are one grandson, Glenn G. Benton, of Jackson Heights, New York; 1 granddaughter, Betty Lou Stanchfield, of Los Angeles; three nieces, Mrs. James Frost, Oakland, California, Mrs. Philura Newlin, Onaga, and Mrs. Gertrude Guffy, Topeka; two nephews, George E. Grim, Wheaton, and P. N. Grim, of Onaga; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church, Wednesday morning, in charge of Rev. J. H. Cone. Interment was in the Onaga Cemetery.

GOINS, GEORGE (1962)

George Goins of Leesville, Louisiana was born December 5, 1900 at Anacoco, Louisiana and passed away at 9:00 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 1962 at the hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, after a long illness. He was married to Marie Lydia Hetzler of Onaga, Kansas on December 27, 1924, at Kansas City, Missouri and lived there for a year. From there they moved to Onaga, Kansas where he operated a café for eleven years. They then moved to Nebraska where after a couple of years Mr. Goins’ health failed him and they moved to Louisiana.

His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Lucy) Richardson of Leesville, Louisiana, and Mrs. Wylie (Lulu) C. Martin of Alexandria, Louisiana, one half-brother, David Potter, of Rialto, California; and a large number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Odd Fellow’s Lodge No. 83 of Leesville, Louisiana.

Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Friday morning, July 24 at Tessendorf Chapel, conducted by the Rev. S. E. Bruce. Burial was in the Onaga cemetery with the Onaga I.O.O.F. in charge of graveside services.

GOODMAN, DEWEY R.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, at the Congregational Church at Wheaton for Dewey R. Goodman, 91, Scottsdale, Arizona formerly of Wheaton. Earlier services were held Tuesday at Scottsdale Shepherd of the Hills Congregational Church. Mr. Goodman died Saturday, February 3, 1990 at a Scottdale hospital.

He was born June 3, 1898 a mile north of Wheaton, the son of Josephus Loring and Anna Jane Eades Goodman. He attended Wheaton schools and was graduated from Wheaton High School in 1917.

Mr. Goodman was a rural mail carrier out of the Wheaton Post Office for more than 38 years before he retired October 31, 1958.

He was a member of the Congregational Church in Wheaton from 1912 until 1981 when he transferred his membership to Shepherd of the Hills Congregational Church in Scottsdale. He also was a member of Kansas Rural Letter Carriers Association.

He was married to Florence B. Founds on December 11, 1920 in Westmoreland. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Lavina B. Berner, Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Phyllis J. Corey, Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Rose Henderson, Topeka a brother, Raymond Goodman, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Congregational Cemetery in Wheaton. Mr. Goodman will lie in state from 9 a.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday at Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton and later at the church.

GEYER, FRED H.

Onaga – Services for Fred H. Geyer, 61, of Gary, Indiana, formerly of the Havensville community, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Tessendorf Mortuary of Onaga. Burial will be in the St. Clere Cemetery near Emmett. He died Tuesday at Gary.

He was born July 25, 1900 near Havensville.

He is survived by his widow (May) of the home; a daughtere, Mrs. Robert Davies of Gary; four grandchildren; a brother, William S. Geyer of Havensville; and a sister, Miss Alice Geyer of Onaga.

GODLOVE, CLARA E. TAYLOR

Clara E. Taylor was born in Pine Village, Indiana on August 18, 1873, and passed away at her home, 1122 Chester, Topeka, on July 19, 1946 at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 1 day. She came to Kansas at the age of 3 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Taylor who settled in Leavenworth County, Kansas where she grew to womanhood.

She was married to Walter Scott Godlove on February 28, 1897. In 1919 the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas and in 1927 to Ottawa County. Since 1937 she has made her home in Topeka. Her husband preceded her in death on May 8, 1927. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elsie M. Gibbens of Leevining, California and Mrs. Ella L. Peterson of Salina, Kansas; four sons, Forrest C. of Wichita, Perry C. of Clay Center, Risdon S. of Ada, Kansas and Charles Curtis of the home; also a sister, Mrs. N. H. Hayward, Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, A. E. Taylor of Fayette, Ohio and J. R. Taylor of Sullivan, Ohio; also five grandchildren.

She tried to rear her children to be useful citizens and a credit to the communities in which they live. She was a loving and devoted mother.

Funeral services were held in the Onaga Congregational Church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. L. Cosand, pastor of Wheaton Congregational Church and was laid to rest in the Regar cemetery beside her husband.
