Dale Wesley Ellis 75, Havensville, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Ellis farmed and was a real estate broker. He also was a painter.
He was born August 4, 1924, on a farm near Havensville, the son of Roscoe and Oneita Coldren Ellis. He graduated from Havensville High School in 1942 and attended Kansas State University.
Mr. Ellis was a member of Havensville Christian Church where he served as deacon.
Survivors include two brothers, Leo Ellis, Onaga, and Dr. Boyd Ellis, Okemos, Michigan; and two sisters, Myrtle Shove, Urbana, Illinois, and Juliavina Ellis, Havensville.
Services were at 10:30 Saturday, January 1, 2000, at the Havensville Christian Church. Burial was in the Havensville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Havensville Christian Church or to the American Heart Association and sent in care of Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Onaga.
Grover William Eddy, 71, Onaga, died Saturday in a Topeka hospital where he was admitted several days earlier after suffering a broken hip. He had a heart attack.
Mr. Eddy had been a coach and teacher in Pottawatomie County schools many years. He lived in Onaga many years.
He was born June 28, 1915, in the Savannah community west of Havensville, the son of Walter and Lydia Grover Eddy. He was graduated from Havensville High School in 1933 and from Kansas State University at Manhattan in 1938.
Mr. Eddy was an athletic coach and teacher at Vermillion and later at Norcatur, Onaga, Havensville, Wheaton and Circleville high schools. He later coached and taught at Wheaton and Havensville Grade schools. He coached summer softball at Onaga many years.
He served with the Army in Europe during World War II.
He was a member of the Congregational Church at Onaga and was a former Sunday school teacher at the Christian Church at Havensville. He was a member of the Lions Club at Onaga and served the club as treasurer 15 years. He was a life member of the Kansas National Education Association and served on the board of directors of the Area Agency on Aging at Manhattan.
Mr. Eddy refereed football and basketball games in the Onaga area many years.
He was married to Mary Margot Sage of Topeka December 27, 1962, at Holton. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter Mrs. Vivian Ann Thomsen, Overland Park; and a brother, Walter R. Eddy, Onaga.
Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, at the Congregational Church at Onaga. Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts at Onaga conducted graveside services at Onaga Cemetery.
Funeral services were Saturday morning at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for Albert P. Eisenbarth, 55, of Topeka. Mr. Eisenbarth passed away February 23 at Community Hospital in Onaga. He had been hospitalized several weeks with cancer.
Born November 12, 1911 in Corning, he had been employed by Seymour Foods Co. in Topeka. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Topeka.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Eisenbarth, of the home; a son, Gary Lee Eisenbarth, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Norma Jean Anderson of Lincoln, NE and Mrs. Clifford Coleman of Topeka; his mother, Mrs. Mary Eisenbarth of Onaga; three brothers, Vincent Eisenbarth of Holton, and Ed Eisenbarth and Ray Eisenbarth, both of Seneca; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Becker of Frankfort, and four grandchildren.
Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Corning.
Barbara J. Eddy, 66, Topeka, formerly of Onaga, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.
She was born march 25, 1933, in Lubbock, Texas. She was adopted by John and Merle A.Walker Johns in 1942.
Mrs. Eddy owned and operated Eddy’s Cafe in Havensville and the Huddle Cafe in Onaga. She also was Administrator at Golden Acres Nursing Center in Onaga for seven years. After retiring, Mrs. Eddy and her husband moved from rural Havensville to Onaga. They moved to Topeka in March of 1997.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Onaga.
She married Walter “Boscoe” Eddy July 24, 1949 at Wamego. He died April 12, 1999.
Survivors include a son, John W. Eddy, Olathe; two daughters, Brenda J. Eddy, Topeka and Sue A. Rose, Olathe; one brother, John Turner, Oklahoma and two grandchildren.
Cremation is planned and Graveside services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Onaga Cemetery.
Ernest Eddy, third child of Theodore and Martha Eddy, was born on December 31, 1870 in a log cabin on the farm west of Havensville at Savannah and died in the Community Hospital at Onaga September 14, 1960 at the age of 89.
After a brief period at an Atchison business school he was married to Ellis Coates of Havensville at Holton, February 18, 1891. Except for a short time in business in Havensville his life was spent in farming and stock raising near town and in 1951 he moved back to the old home place.
His wife died July 9, 1913 and he earned the respect of all who knew him for the way he raised his family after the death of their mother. Also preceding him in death were a son, Hobart, and two daughters, Mrs. Isla Harris and Mrs. Rosamond Marcoux.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Bahret of Havensville and four sons, Luther Eddy of Centralia, Cecil Eddy of Richmond, CA, Avery Eddy of Wamego and Galen Eddy of Havensville. There are 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Four sisters also survive: Mrs. Flora Davison Kansas City, MO and Mrs. Cora Dibbern, Mrs. Flossie Cox and Mrs. Hazel Schane, and a brother-in-law, Ed Coates, all of Havensville.
He was a member of the Havensville Methodist Church and in 1953 was given his 50 year Masonic pin from the local lodge.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Havensville Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul D. E. Holter conducting the services assisted by the Rev. M. H. Marshall of Onaga. Interment was in the Havensville Cemetery. The Havensville Masonic Lodge officiated at the graveside.
He was a quiet and unassuming man and will be remembered for his unselfishness and his thoughtfulness of others.
Walter J. Eisenbarth, 75, Onaga, died Friday, May 8, 1992, at Onaga Community Hospital.
He owned and operated Walt’s IGA and also was a co-owner of Golden Acres Nursing Home, both in Onaga.
He was born March 11, 1917, in Corning, the son of Fred and Agnes Duethman Eisenbarth. He moved to Onaga in 1951.
He was married to Velma Alexander on June 16, 1948 in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Linda Eisenbarth, Topeka; two sons, Fred Eisenbarth, Overland Park, and Rick Eisenbarth, Shawnee; a brother, Clarence “Butch” Eisenbarth, Jacksonville, OR; and three grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10a.m. Monday, May 11, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery. Rosary was held Sunday evening.
Mrs. Mary Margot Eddy, 64, Onaga, died at her home over the past weekend.
The daughter of Olcott W. and Vivian Eytchison Sage, she was born January 8, 1929 at Kansas City, Missouri.
She graduated from Salina High School with the class of 1947. She attended Kansas State University at Manhattan and later graduated from Kansas University at Lawrence.
Mrs. Eddy began her teaching career at Clark’s School of Business in Topeka. She also taught at Circleville, KS from the fall of 1964 to the spring of 1967 when she accepted a position at the Onaga Grade School, teaching language arts and mathematics.
She transferred to Onaga High School in 1981, teaching in the business department until she retired in 1991.
She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Onaga; a member of Onaga Chapter #71 Order of Eastern Star; Delta Kappa Gamma educational society, and a thirty-five year member of Kansas National Education Association.
She was married December 27, 1962 to Grover W. Eddy of Onaga, at Holton, KS. He died August 30, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Vivian Ann Thomsen, Overland Park; two grandchildren, a brother, Stephen Sage, Phillipburg; one niece and one nephew.
Memorial services were at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, march 31, 1993 at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Onaga. The casket remained closed. Mrs. Eddy was cremated and private inurnment services will be held at a later date.
Bertha Summerville was born near Onaga, Kansas, August 5, 1896, and died at their farm home, near Centralia on Friday, July 18, 1924, at the age of 27 years, 11 months and 13 days. Heart trouble was the cause of her sudden death.
Practically all her life had been spent in the Onaga-Centralia district. In February 1917 she was united in marriage to Thomas Edmond, and to this union were born four children, three of whom survive her.
Besides her husband and children, she has living, five sisters and her mother, and by all these loved ones she will be greatly missed, as she will be by her large circle of friends, also.
Mrs. Edmond was a devoted wife and mother and was a member of the Christian Church from early childhood and the community extends its sympathy to those who mourn the going out of this young, active life.
The funeral service was held at the home at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, conducted by Rev. F. J. Tresidder of the Congregational Church. Interment was in Mulberry Cemetery, southwest of Centralia.
Elton R. Edman, 62, of Ft. White, Florida, died Sunday October 2, 1994, at his residence following a long illness. A native of Onaga, Mr. Edman went to Ft. White from Sarasota and Omaha in 1979. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served in Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the Retired Air Force Sergeants Association.
Mr. Edman is survived by his wife and many other family members.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 5 th, in the Biggs Memorial Chapel with military honors. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
Centralia – Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hayes funeral Home here for John Thomas “Tom” Edman, 79, Centralia, who died Saturday in a Seneca rest home. He had been admitted to a Seneca hospital in October after he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
He was married to Ruth Summerville August 24, 1923. She survives.
Other survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. Beulah Gatson, Monroe City, MO; Mrs. Golda Dillman, 834 Plass, and Mrs. Gladys Schlarman, 1208 Oakland, both in Topeka, Mrs. Opal Noland, Hoyt, Mrs. Viola Tims, Centralia, Mrs. Valorie Brown, Wichita, Mrs. Florence Ascheman, Blue Rapids, and Mrs. Peggy Eisenbarth, Seneca; three sons, Andrew Edman, Onaga, Elton Edman, Omaha, NE, and William Edman, Lawrence; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Talley, Corning; a brother, Orville Edman, Corning; and 22 grandchildren.
Burial will be in Neuchatel Cemetery north of Onaga.
Virgie M. Eby, 84, Onaga, died Friday, May 6, 1994, at a Manhattan hospital.
Mrs. Eby and her husband farmed.
She was born April 14, 1910 in the Neuchatel community north of Onaga, the daughter of Henry and Cenith Morrison Labbe.
She was married to John S. Eby September 13, 1927, in Holton. He died April 7, 1990. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jule Labbe, and a sister, Marcina Nagel.
Survivors include a daughter, Ida M. Bean, Centralia; a sister, Viola Hogan, Broken Arrow, OK; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Burial was in Neuchatel Cemetery.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 26, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga for Velma P. Alexander Eisenbarth, 75, Onaga. She died Wednesday, August 23, 1995.
She was born March 24, 1920 in Corning, the daughter of James Preston and Minna Beck Alexander. She attended schools in the Corning and Soldier areas and graduated from the Circleville High School in 1938. She moved with her family to Houston, Texas, returning to Kansas in 1945.
She was married to Walter John Eisenbarth, June 16, 1948, in Topeka. They moved to Onaga in 1950 and were employed at Harvey’s IGA Market. They purchased the market, along with Harvey’s Variety Store in the early 1970’s. The store burned in 1979 and was not rebuilt. Mr. and Mrs. Eisenbarth were co-owners of Golden Acres Nursing Home and later managed the Onaga Housing Authority low-rent housing apartments until their retirement in 1990. Mr. Eisenbarth died May 8, 1992.
Mrs. Eisenbarth was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga and the Altar Society of the church, and had been the church organist. She was a long-time volunteer at Community Hospital. She had been a member of Onaga Chapter No. 71, Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Eisenbarth, Topeka; two sons, Rick Eisenbarth and Jim (Fred) Eisenbarth, both of the Kansas City area; two sisters, Wilma Clark and Betty Alexander, both of Lawrence; and three grandchildren.
Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
Roscoe “Bo” Ellis Jr., 90, Havensville, died Monday January 22, 1996 at Community Hospital, Onaga.
Mr. Ellis was a farmer and stockman and had lived south of Havensville since 1931.
He was born July 22, 1905, northwest of Havensville, the son of C. H. and Kitty Allard Ellis. He was graduated from Havensville High School and was a life-long resident of the Havensville area.
Mr. Ellis was a member of the Havensville Christian Church.
He was married to Edna E. Spreer on February 14, 1931, at Holton. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Larry L. Ellis, Havensville; a sister, Jean Henry, Newburg, MO; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by two sisters, Lenora Clements and Ruth Baker, and two brothers, Roscoe Ellis and Glen Ellis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Havensville Christian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Havensville Christian Church or to the Golden Acres Activity Fund and sent in car of Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks funeral home.
John Charles Ellis, 75, Wheaton, died Saturday, April 12,1997, at a Westmoreland care home where he had been since December 1995.
He was born July 12,1921, in Wheaton, the son of Roy and Nellie O’Keefe Ellis. He was graduated from Wheaton High School in 1939 and spent most of his life in the Wheaton community. He was a carpenter and a stone mason and ha built several structures in the Wheaton community including the altar at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wheaton and Knights of Columbus Council No. 3185. He was a member of the American Legion post in Onaga.
He was married to Mary Silvis October 12, 1943, in Grand Island, NE. She died February 16, 1975.
Survivors include four sons, Charles Ellis, Dallas, Richard Ellis, Topeka, Jerome Ellis and Thomas Ellis, both in Manhattan; two daughters, Betty Ellis, Wheaton, and Rosemary Randel, Topeka and nine grandchildren.
A rosary and vigil service was held Monday at Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lillis and burial in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wheaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery Fund in Wheaton.
Cletus C. Ebert, 63, of Topeka died Sunday night in a Topeka hospital where he was admitted Saturday. He had cancer. Mr. Ebert, with his wife, Cecilia, operated a 5 and 10 cent store here from April 1952, to May 1954.
He was born November 24, 1911 in the Flush community and lived in Topeka the past 20 years. He formerly was manager of Gamble Stores at Blue Rapids, St. Marys, and several other Kansas towns. Earlier he had been a farmer. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka.
His wife, Cecilia, died in 1969. Survivors include five brothers, Al, Harold, Charles benedict and Kenneth Ebert, all of St. George, and three sisters, Mrs. Ann White, Wamego, Sister Carol Ebert, St. Louis, MO and Beatrice Ebert, Manhattan.
Services were at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Flush, with burial in the church Cemetery.
Edna Eleanor Eckart, of Belvue, passed away June 11 at Genn hospital in Wamego after an extended illness, at the age of 59 years, three months and 24 days.
She was born February 17, 1903, at Onaga, the daughter of Ulrich and Annie Schane. She attended school in Onaga, graduating in 1922. She later attended the Emporia State Teacher’s College and taught for 22 years. The last nine years she taught in the Wamego Grade School and retired from teaching in February of this year.
She was married in 1929 to Carl Eckart who preceded her in death in 1961.
Mrs. Eckart reared from infancy a niece, Mrs. Barbara Cook of Belvue. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority, the BPW of Wamego and the Kansas State Teachers’ Association.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Schane, and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Clara Hayes of Onaga; three brothers, Walter Schane of Havensville and Lester and Raymond Schane, both of Onaga; four nephews and three nieces.
Rosary was recited Wednesday, June 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Stewart Memorial Chapel in Wamego. Requiem High Mass was held Thursday, June 14 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. Interment was in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery at Elbo, KS. The Rev. Father Leo Cooper officiated.
Mrs. Lyda Eddy, 73, of Onaga passed away Wednesday evening, July 26, at Community Hospital following a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church, conducted by the Rev. M. H. Marshall of Truro, Iowa. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
Mrs. Eddy was the daughter of Ellen and O. W. Grover and was born April 4, 1889 at the family farm in the Pleasant Valley community north of Onaga. She attended elementary school at Pleasant Valley and upon graduation from Onaga High School, taught school at the Fairview Grade School located a few miles south of Onaga. She was a member of the Onaga Congregational Church.
On June 24, 1908 she was united in marriage to Walter William Eddy of Havensville. They began their married life on the Eddy ranch located near the cattle loading switch of Savannah where they resided until their retirement in 1951 when they moved to Onaga.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957; one sister, Ina, who died in infancy, and two brothers, Roy and Ross Grover.
She is survived by two sons, Grover, of the home, and Walter R. of Havensville; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Eddy; three grandchildren, Johnny, Brenda and Sue Ann Eddy, all of rural Havensville; one brother, O. L. Grover of Onaga, and numerous other relatives.
Walter William Eddy was born December 6, 1886, at Savannah, Kansas, a railroad settlement that was located about midway between Onaga and Havensville; and was the youngest son of Martha Augusta Jacobie Eddy and Theodore Ira Eddy.
He spent his entire life, until partial retirement, on the same farm – with unselfish devotion to his family and pride and happiness he found with his grandchildren, and with conscientious fulfillment of his neighborly obligations; and there met his death on August 30, 1957 at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 23 days.
He was a member of the Congregational Church.
In 1908 he was united in marriage to Lyda M. Grover and to this union two sons were born; Grover William, who is teaching school at Wheaton, and Walter Roscoe, who with his family now resides on the home place.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two sons, his daughter-in-law, Barbara, and three grandchildren, Johnny, Brenda and Sue; four sisters, Mrs. Flora Davison of Kansas City, Mrs. Cora Dibbern, Mrs. Flossie Cox and Mrs. Hazel Schane and one brother, Ernest Eddy all of Havensville; a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Congregational Church by the Rev. M. H. Marshall at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 1. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Orville D. Edman, 62, of Duluth died at his home Saturday, April. He had apparently been dead two days before the body was discovered.
He was born March 30, 1910, near Baileyville. He was a veteran of World War II and during service with the U. S. Army, was a prisoner of war from May 7, 1942 to September 3, 1945. He was captured by the Japanese on Corregidor Beach, Philippine Islands. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7772 at Onaga.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 at Tessendorf Mortuary. Military graveside services were conducted at the Centralia Cemetery.
Mrs. Agnes M. Eisenbarth, 82, of Onaga, died Saturday at the Community Hospital where she had been admitted earlier the same day. She had been a resident of Golden Acres Nursing Home since May of last year.
She was born November 23, 1895 at Osborne and moved to Seneca at an early age. She lived in the Corning community many years before moving to Onaga in 1968.
She was a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga.
She was married February 22, 1916 to Fred Eisenbarth at Seneca. He preceded her in death November 1, 1968. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lynn Eisenbarth, in July of 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Eisenbarth of Onaga and Clarence Eisenbarth of San Jose, CA; a sister, Mrs. Laurina Lackey of Seneca; a brother, Joseph Duethman of Westphalia; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited at 8:15 p.m. Monday at Tessendorf Mortuary, with services at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at Corning. Interment was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Corning.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eisenbarth, 88, were at 10 a.m. Saturday at Annunciation Catholic Church at Frankfort. Mrs. Eisenbarth died February 7 at Community Hospital. She had been in ill health for several years. She was the grandmother of Mrs. Kenny Graf of Onaga.
She was born August 17, 1884 in Corning and spent most of her life in the Corning, Kelly and Onaga areas, moving from Onaga to Frankfort four years ago. She was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Agilberta Becker, Frankfort; two sons, Ed. J. Eisenbarth, Seneca, and Raymond Eisenbarth, Topeka; three brothers, John Ketter, St. Francis, Henry Ketter, Meriden, and Andrew Ketter, Falls City, NE; 19 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Eisenbarth in 1918, and two sons, Vincent Eisenbarth and Albert Eisenbarth.
Burial was in St. Bede’s Catholic Cemetery at Kelly.
Funeral services for James Godfrey Elder were held Thursday, February 3, 1966, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Coal Creek, Kansas, with burial in the Coal Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Elder passed away Monday January 31 at his home hear Onaga. He had been in poor health for the past ten years.
He was born on September 8, 1914 at Stevensport, Kentucky. As a small child, he moved with his family to the Havensville community.
He was united in matrimony to Mary Louise Weber on May 26, 1935 at Onaga, Kansas, then moved north of Holton where he spent over a year on a farm. From there they moved to the Neuchatel community where he spent the remainder of his life as a farmer.
He was an active member and president of the Farmers Union since it was organized in the Neuchatel community.
Mr. Elder is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Mrs. Ardath Forgy of Atwood, KS, Mrs. JoAnn Noud, Kansas City, MO and Connie Elder of the home. Also included in the immediate family are six grandchildren and two sons-in-law.

Mrs. Corrine Louise Elder, 53, of Havensville died Sunday in Community Hospital at Onaga. She had had arthritis for about 25 years and had been hospitalized about three weeks.
She was born December 23, 1914 near Onaga. She was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga.
She is survived by her husband, Damien Elder of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Bahret and Mrs. Martha Bettencourt, both of Havensville; two sons, Don C. Elder of Belvue and Paul F. Elder of Havensville; a sister, Mrs. Martha Kolterman of Havensville; three brothers, Martin Miller of Havensville, William A. Miller of Buhl, Idaho and Raymond E. Miller of Arleta, CA; and 22 grandchildren.
Rosary was recited Monday evening at 8 o’clock at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Funeral services were at 10:30 Tuesday morning at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery southeast of Onaga.
Funeral services for Mrs. Eva K. Elder, 71, Wamego, were at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Wamego with interment in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Elder died Sunday at a Wamego hospital where she was admitted August 12.
She was born February 10, 1904, at Cloverport, KY and lived at Havensville ten years before she moved to Wamego in 1935. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Wamego.
She was married to Charles Layton Elder in 1924 at Jeffersonville, IN. He died May 26, 1968. A stepson, Godfrey Elder died in 1966.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Lamastus, Tell City, IN and Thomas Elder, Wamego; and six daughters, Mrs. Alma Lee Fechter, Mrs. Betty Willard and Mrs. Martina Trudo, all of Wamego, Mrs. Verna Roberts, Chanute, Mrs. Charlene Nelson, Colorado Springs, and Mrs. Janice Jepson, Sacramento, CA.
Also surviving are two stepsons, Damien Elder, Onaga, and Charles H. Elder, Wamego; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Leona Dulac, Onaga, and Mrs. Evelyn Winters, Wamego; a sister, Mrs. June Shadwick, Hawesville, KY; 51 grandchildren and 77 great-grandchildren.
Services were at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon, December 24, at the Congregational Church for Earl “Pat” Elliott, 78. Mr. Elliott died Thursday at Community Hospital here. He had cancer for several years.
He was born March 8, 1900, on a farm southeast of Onaga, and lived in Onaga most of his life. He attended schools in the Onaga area, and Lawrence Business College one year. He was in the Onaga grocery business for more than 50 years.
In 1947 he moved to Granby, CO where he operated a grocery store for three years before returning to Onaga. Mr. Elliott was employed at Harvey’s IGA until he retired in 1966. He then assisted his wife in the operation of Elliott’s Liquor store until 1971 when they both retired.
He married Grace Neiberger on March 8, 1938, in Holton. She survives.
Other survivors include two stepsons, Marion Neiberger of Kansas City, and Earl Neiberger of Herkimer, NY; two brothers, Frank Elliott of Marysville and Thomas Elliott of Eugene, OR; five grandchildren and one great grandson.
Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
William Elliott was born on December 22, 1857 at Belfast, Ireland, and departed this life March 11, 1938, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 17 days. In the year of 1878 he came to the United States to Carroll County, state of Illinois, and resided there until he became a citizen of the United States in 1883.
The following year he came to the state of Kansas and started farming in Pottawatomie County in the Fairview neighborhood, and spent the remainder of his life near this community.
On December 25, 1884, he was united in marriage to Lena Lenora Michael at Holton, KS. To this union four children were born: Elizabeth Pickle, of Jamestown, KS; Frank Elliott of Marysville; Thomas Elliott, of Topeka; and Earl Elliott, of the home address.
He united with the Presbyterian Church of Belfast, Ireland in his early youth, and after he came to the United States and upon settling in the community, he became a believer and regular supporter of the Congregational Church of Onaga. As a man he was honest, industrious, a good father, a good husband and a good neighbor.
He was preceded in death by his wife on September 27, 1935, and leaves to mourn his departure the four children, one sister, Elizabeth Brown, of Keady, Ireland, three nephews, and one niece, of Belfast, Ireland, and ten grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Thos. C. Hinkle, in the Congregational Church, on Sunday. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Genevieve “Gen” Ellis, 56, of Wheaton died Sunday at Onaga Community Hospital where she was admitted a few days earlier. She had diabetes and other ailments and had been hospitalized many times over the last several years.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Wheaton. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was born May 19, 1918, at Ravinia, SD and lived at Wheaton since 1944. She was a teacher in South Dakota and later taught at Wheaton Grade School.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Happy Hour Club, both at Wheaton, and the National Education Association.
Survivors include her husband, John C. Ellis, to whom she was married October 12, 1944; two daughters, Betty Ellis, Onaga, and Mrs. Rosemary Randel, Fort Jackson, SC; four sons, Richard and Charles Ellis, both of Topeka, Jerome Ellis, Manhattan, and Tom Ellis, at home; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Silvis, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister, Theresa Silvis, Sioux Falls, SD; and three brothers, Bob Silvis and Joe Silvis both of Sioux Falls, SD and Jim Silvis, Saugus, CA.
Funeral services for Mr. Roscoe Ellis, Sr., 85, were held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at the Havensville Christian Church. Interment was in the Havensville Cemetery. Mr. Ellis died Monday at his home northwest of Havensville. Earlier, he had been a patient in a Manhattan hospital.
He was born May 18, 1886 at Havensville where he spent most of his life. He operated the S. W. Ellis Elevator, Feed, Grain and Grocery Co. at Havensville until 1920 when he became a farmer. He was a member of the Christian Church at Havensville.
Survivors include his wife, Cleo Coldren Ellis of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Shove of Urbana, IL and Miss Juliavina Ellis of the home; four sons, Leo Ellis and dale Ellis, both of the home, Roscoe Ellis, Jr. of Manhattan and Boyd Ellis of East Lansing, MI; a sister, Mrs. Floy M. Minney of Pasadena, CA and ten grandchildren.
Ira Eddy, 66, cashier of the Havensville State Bank, took his own life last Saturday morning, after several months of illness. Several from this city attended the funeral Monday afternoon.
Services were December 29 at Stewart funeral Home in Wamego for Avery G. Eddy, 82, Wamego, who died December 25 at a Des Moines, Iowa, hospital.
He and his wife had gone to Iowa to be near a daughter this winter.
Mr. Eddy formerly taught and coached at Effingham, Goss and Onaga. He also was am implement dealer many years at Wamego before he retired in 1962.
He was born August 4, 1904, at Havensville, the son of Ernest and Ella Coated Eddy. He was graduated from Pittsburg State University at Pittsburg. During the past 25 years he had spent the winters at a home he owned in Sun City, AZ.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Havensville Lodge No. 34, AF&AM, both at Havensville and of Arab Shrine in Topeka.
He was married to Gwendolyn Springer in 1932 at Muscotah. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Karen Brennan, Indianola, Iowa; two brothers, Galen Eddy, Tucson, AZ and Cecil Eddy, Richmond, CA and three grandsons.
Burial was in Wamego City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wamego Senior Citizens Center.
Cressie Eddy, 93, Havensville died Monday, October 28, 1985 at an Onaga nursing home.
Miss Eddy had been a music teacher.
She was born January 2, 1892 at Havensville, the daughter of Ira and Mary Roach Eddy. She spent most of her life in the Havensville community and attended Boyles Conservatory of Music at Emporia.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Havensville, where she was church pianist 25 years.
Services were at ten o’clock Wednesday, October 30, in the United Methodist Church at Havensville. Burial was in the Havensville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Havensville United Methodist Church or to the activity fund at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga. Mercer Funeral Home, Holton, was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Luther M. Eddy, 71, died May 21 in a Salina hospital where he had been a patient for ten days. Funeral services were May 23 at a Salina funeral home.
Mr. Eddy, who had lived in Salina for eight years, was a native of Havensville. He was a retired high school teacher and principal and had taught in a number of schools in and near Pottawatomie County. He held a master’s degree from Pittsburg State College.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men, Kansas Schoolmaster’s club, and professional teaching organizations.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Margaret Eddy, of the home; three sons, Dr. William Eddy, Charlottesville, VA, Dr. Thomas Eddy, Emporia, and Dr. Mitchell Eddy, Seattle, WA; two daughters, Mrs. Palmer Price, Salina, and Mrs. Gerald Figgs, Phoenix, AZ; three brothers, Avery Eddy, Wamego, Galen Eddy, Richmond, CA a sister, Mrs. Pearl Bahret, Havensville, and nine grandchildren.
Interment was at Salina.
Glen Ellis, 70, Havensville, died of a heart attack in a truck two miles west of Havensville while returning from hunting Sunday, January 11.
Mr. Ellis worked most of his life on a ranch near Havensville. He later worked at St. Marys Cooperative. He retired in 1981.
He was born April 11, 1915, at Havensville, the son of C. H. and Katherine Allard Ellis.
Mr. Ellis was a veteran of World War II.
He was married to Helen McBroom, December 30, 1960, at Alma. She survives.
Other survivors include three stepsons, Wayne Baker, St. Louis, MO, Charles Persons, Rossville, and Bill Persons, Gladstone, MO; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Karra Lee Magnett, Republic; two brothers, Russell Ellis and Roscoe Ellis, both of Havensville; three sisters, Mrs. Lenore Clements, Denver, CO and Mrs. Ruth Baker and Mrs. Jean Henry, both of Newburg, MO; and seven step-grandchildren.
The body was cremated.
Onaga – Mrs. Grace A. Elliott, 84, Onaga, died Tuesday, April 1, at her home.
Mrs. Elliott and her husband owned and operated the Elliott Liquor Store in Onaga 23 years. They retired in 1973. She also later worked periodically at Elder Liquor Store in Onaga.
She was born October 4, 1901, south of Wheaton, the daughter of Charles and Sylvia Stevens Burnett, and spent her early life in the Wheaton community.
Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Congregational Church, Historical Society and Senior Citizens, all at Onaga.
She was married to Albert E. Neiberger in 1919. He died in 1926. She was married to Earl E. Elliott March 8, 1935. He died December 22, 1978. A son, Marion Neiberger, died in July 1984.
Survivors include a son, Earl E. Neiberger, Onaga; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Congregational Church in Onaga. Burial will be in Onaga Cemetery. Mrs. Elliott will lie in state after 6 p.m. today at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga and an hour before service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church or Senior Citizens at Onaga.
John S. Eby, 84, Onaga, died Saturday, April 7, 1990, at Onaga Community Hospital.
Mr. Eby farmed in the Neuchatel community north of Onaga for 50 years before he retired and moved to Onaga in 1986.
He was born December 23, 1905, in Circleville, the son of Louis and Anna Eby. He attended school in Circleville.
He married Virgie Labbe in Holton September 13, 1928. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Ida M. Bean, Cottonwood Falls; a half-sister, Edith Gellner, Monroe, WA; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Burial was in Neuchatel Cemetery north of Onaga.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, for Gwendolyn Eddy, 85, of Indianola, Iowa, formerly of Wamego. She died Thursday, May 10, 1990, at a Des Moines, Iowa hospital.
Mrs. Eddy and her husband owned and operated Massey-Ferguson Implement Co., and she was its bookkeeper, in Wamego until they retired in 1962. Mr. Eddy was a former teacher in the Onaga school system.
She was born may 27, 1904, in Goff, the daughter of Frank and Norma Kerr Springer. She and her husband lived in Wamego from 1938 to 1962, then spent their winters in Sun City, AZ, and summers in Wamego until she moved to Indianola.
She attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a member of the Christian Church in Goff.
She was married to Avery Eddy in 1932 in Effingham. He died December 25, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Brennan, Indianola, Iowa; and three grandsons.
Burial was in Wamego City Cemetery.
Yvo R. Ebert, 44, Ford dealer in Onaga, and the father of 12 children, was killed in a highway accident early Monday morning east of Onaga. Injured in the accident was Byron Brunkow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz Brunkow, also of Onaga. Brunkow was taken to Community Hospital where he is reported recovering satisfactorily.
Mr. Ebert and Howard Manthe had gone to help a stranded oil transport truck which had become “jack-knifed” across the highway about a half mile west of the junction of K-16 and K-63. The truck’s engine had broken down and the Ebert Motor Co. wrecker was trying to pull the vehicle back into position.
A 1958 Chevrolet, owned and driven by young Brunkow, came over the hill and failed to stop before crashing into the stranded truck. It is believed that Ebert was in the path of the Chevrolet and was killed instantly.
Ebert was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 85 of Onaga, and served on the Boy Scout Committee or Troop No. 93. He also was assistant manager of the Onaga Little League baseball team.
Mr. Ebert is survived by his wife, Patricia, of the home here; 12 children: Barbara, Bill, Bernard, Ralph, Louise, Jerome, Edwin, Harold, Keven, Shawn, Maureen, and Gregory, also of the home; his father, C. A. Ebert of Manhattan; three sisters, Mrs. Tom White of Onaga, Miss Beatrice Ebert of Manhattan, and sister M. Carol, SSND, St. Louis, MO; six brothers, Aloysius, Harold, Charles, Benedict and Kenneth all of St. George, KS and Cletus of Topeka.
Services were held at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery at Flush. The Requiem High Mass was offered by an uncle of Mrs. Ebert, the Rev. Coleman Farrell of St. Benedict’s, Atchison. The sermon was delivered by the Rev. Francis Krische, Onaga.
Graveside services were conducted by Onaga American Legion Post No. 85.
Martha E. Eggerling, 76, Indianapolis, IN, died November 24, 1988 at an Indianapolis hospital. She had cancer.
She was born February 16, 1912, at Thayer, NE the seventh child of Rev. A. A. and Augusta Hilgekamp Schormann. The family later moved to Staplehurst, NE where she attended school and was confirmed.
Mrs. Eggerling graduated from Seward, NE High School in 1930 and was employed by the Seward Creamery Company until 1934. She then worked for a short time for the Seward County WPA office and then as a secretary for the Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power Company until December 1938.
She was married December 28, 1938 to Reinhard M. Eggerling. They made their first home in Clarinda, Iowa where Mr. Eggerling taught school. They also lived at Algona, Iowa; Sidney, NE, Blue Hill, NE, Duluth, KS and Farmers Retreat, IN. They moved to Indianapolis in 1974. Mr. and Mrs. Eggerling celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary in June 1988. Mrs. Eggerling was a charter member and 12-year president of the Ladies Circle at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church and also was a volunteer for Lutheran Braille workers. She had donated over 800 hours of volunteer sewing time for Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis.
She is survived by her husband Reinhard, of the home in Indianapolis.
Other survivors include a son, Roger Eggerling of Louisville, KY; four daughters, Barbara Teske, Onaga; Elaine Clements, Albuquerque, NM, Marilyn Williams, Dillsboro, IN; and Janet Trent, Indianapolis, three brothers, Martin Schormann, Beatrice, NE, Edward Schormann, Lincoln, NE, and Victor Schormann, Dekalf, IL; two sisters, Theodora Schormann, Lincoln, NE and Anna Schormann, Seward, NE; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted November 28 at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, India[na]polis. Interment was in an Indianapolis cemetery.
A college scholarship fund for full-time church workers has been established at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Indianapolis as a memorial to Mrs. Eggerling.
Russell A. Ellis, 82, of Havensville, died Saturday, June 2, 1990, at Onaga Community Hospital.
Mr. Ellis was a farmer and stockman and a lifetime resident of Havensville.
He was born February 12,1908, at Havensville, the son of Clarence H. and Katherine Allard Ellis. He was graduated from Havensville High School in 1926.
Mr. Ellis was a member of the Havensville Christian Church.
He married Wilhelmina K. Blaske August 22, 1931 at Washington. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, R. Meta Area, Havensville; three sisters, Lenore Clements, Denver, Jean Henry, Rolla, MO, and Ruth Baker, Newburg, MO; a brother, Roscoe Ellis, Havensville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated. Inurnment will be at Havensville Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund and sent in care of First National Bank at Onaga, 66521.
Helen R. Ellis, 68, of Havensville, died Saturday, February 3, 1990, at Onaga Community Hospital.
Mrs. Ellis operated the Havensville Tavern before she and her husband retired. Before that they worked on the Henry Ranch north of Havensville.
She was born April 6, 1921, in Holton, the daughter of Roy and Frances McGrath McBroom.
She was married to Glenn Ellis on December 30, 1960, in Alma. He died November 11, 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Lee Magnett, Havensville; two sons, Chuck Persons, Rossville, and Bill Persons, Gladstone, MO; her mother, Frances McBroom; four sisters, Mary Medlock, Mayetta and Mildred Baldwin, Joan Dittemore, and Barbara Fairfield, all of Holton; two brothers, John McBroom, Holton, and Marvin Mcbroom, Scott City; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Ellis was cremated.

Cecelia O’Keeffe Elder, 80, Onaga, died January 7 at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Elder and her husband owned and operated Elder Retail Liquor Store in Onaga many years. She previously was a cook at Wheaton schools several years.
She was born January 3, 1912, at Lillis, the eldest of nine children of Albert and Anna Mary Runnebaum Roggenkamp. She grew up in the Lillis area and later lived in the Wheaton and Onaga areas.
Mrs. Elder was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga, the Happy Hour Club of the Wheaton area more than 50 years and was active in Onaga Senior Citizens Center.
She married Urban O’Keeffe on June 15, 1931, at Lillis. He died January 19, 1966. She married Damien Elder in 1969 in Wheaton. He survives. An infant son, Jerome O’Keefe, died in 1935, and a stepdaughter, Carol Bahret, also preceded her in death.
Other survivors include four daughters, Verlene McNally, Havensville, Julia Conaway, Topeka, and Marsha Bergman and Pam Kufahl, both of Onaga; three sons, John O’Keefe, Phoenix, AZ, Galen “Bud” O’Keefe, Kansas City, MO and Steven O’Keefe, Topeka; a stepdaughter, Martha Bettencourt, Havensville; two stepsons, Don Elder and Paul Elder, both of Havensville; five sisters, Mildred Magnett, Likkis, Alma Matzke, Wheaton, Lorene Lefebvre, Havensville, Louella Enneking, Seneca, and Joan O’Shea, Oskaloosa; a brother, Ralph Roggenkamp, Blaine, 28 grandchildren; 28 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 31 step-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held January 10 in St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Wheaton. Memorial contributions may be made to Onaga Senior Citizens Center, St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery or the charity of the donor’s choice in care of Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton.
Damien Layton Elder, 80, Onaga, died Wednesday, March 18, 1992, at an Onaga hospital.
Mr. Elder was a farmer and later drove a bus for Unified School District No. 322 at Onaga. He also owned and operated Elder Retail Liquor Store in Onaga several years.
He was born January 28, 1912, in Kentucky, the son of Charles Layton and Viola Mae Basham Elder. He spent most of his life in the Onaga and Havensville communities.
Mr. Elder was a member of St.Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga.
He was married to Corrinne Louise Miller in 1935 in Wheaton. She died October 6, 1968. He was married to Cecelia O’Keefe in 1969 in Wheaton. She died January 7, 1992. A daughter, Carol Bahret, died in 1987.
