Marilda Grover, daughter of George and Martha Grover, was born in Chautauqua County, New York, August 15, 1837, in a family of eight children, she herself being the fifth, and she passed to her reward at her home on Onaga, Kansas, February 14, 1920, at 8:20 p.m. aged 82 years, 5 months, and 19 days.

At the age of 20, in 1857, she was united in marriage to Joseph L. Colwell at St. Joseph, Michigan. That same year they moved to LaGrange, Indiana. In 1859 the family moved to Kansas, settling in America City, where they lived for two years, then moving on a farm three miles north of Onaga, where she remained until 1886, when she moved into Onaga.

To this family were born six children as follows: Ella May, who died in infancy; Will L. Colwell, of Frankfort, KS; Frank G., of San Diego, CA; R. J. Colwell, of this city, Mrs. Florence Johnston, of Topeka, KS and L. C. Colwell of this city.

In 1880 the husband and father passed to his reward.

In the pioneer days when Mrs. Colwell came to live in Kansas there were many natural hardships to endure and there was a great opportunity for neighborly service. Mrs. Colwell always stood ready to help a neighbor in sickness or need of any kind. She would go into the home and help care for the sick and do any work, which she was for her to do. By this kindly spirit she has won the friendship of all who knew her. This spirit she drew from her knowledge of her Lord. She was an eager and appreciative attendant of the house of worship. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of ‘Onaga in 1886. Her home was always open to welcome the ministers of the gospel. To her it was a privilege and an honor to have them come.

She leaves to mourn her departure five children and seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Harriet Steel, of Waterville, KS, who is afflicted and was unable to be present at the funeral, and there are scores of neighbors and friends. Mrs. Colwell was careful to bear no ill will toward anyone. To the last she was thoughtful of her family and when the end approached she said: “I am very near the crossing and I want to bear no malice toward anyone at all”. A word of tribute is due to her son, L. C. Calwell and his devoted wife who for 17 years have devoted the most watchful care to their mother. During much of this time Mrs. Colwell was confined to her home, and was in need of the careful and loving attention she was always given.

This earth is made poorer by the passing of a faithful saint, and Heaven richer; and in a deeper sense she has not gone from us for she leaves with us her loving memory and good example.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. E. Ryerson, a former pastor of the church in Onaga, but now residing in Holton. He was assisted by Rev. C. M. Good of the Congregational Church. Interment was given in the Onaga Cemetery.
