Kenneth Lee Carl, 52, died Monday, April 18, 1994, at his home in Milan, Italy. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer.
He was born September 9, 1941 in Pendleton, Oregon, the son of Grayson and Marjorie Fuller Carl. Kenny moved to Onaga with his parents in 1951 and attended Onaga Schools, graduating from Onaga High School in 1959. He attended Emporia State University and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in engineering.
Mr. Carl was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at its plant in Waukegan, IL and was later transferred to Waringstown, North Ireland. When Goodyear moved its operation back to the States, he accepted a position with Alfagomma Rubber Co. in Milan, Italy.
He was married to Wendy Abbott August 31, 1968, in Chicago. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Michelle Nelson of Waringstown, North Ireland, and Sara Carl, at school in London; a son, Ian Carl in school in Belfast, Ireland; his parents of Onaga, and a brother, Robert Carl, Lawrence.
Mr. Carl was cremated and his ashes will be taken to Waringstown, North Ireland where a memorial service will be held at a later time.
Richard Eugene Canfield, 54, Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Topeka, died Friday, November 12, 1999, at home of complications from emphysema.
He was born September 26, 1945, in Topeka the son of Harold and Caryl Meyer Canfield. He spent his early life in Topeka and attended Topeka High School. He was a self-employed carpenter and had lived in Fort Worth for 13 years.
Mr. Canfield married Susan Crabtree on January 26, 1986, in Fort Worth. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Richard Canfield of Topeka; a daughter, Kimberly Hollis of Fort Worth, TX; a step-daughter, Lisa LeView of Topeka; step-father and mother Robert and Caryl Morrow of McAllen, TX; a brother, Lloyd Canfield of Topeka; a sister, Bonnie Wright of Topeka and five grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Congregational Cemetery in Wheaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Fund. Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton is in charge of arrangements.
Greenleaf – Maurice Dale Carlson, 68, Greenleaf, died Sunday, October 31, 1999, at a nursing home in Linn.
He was born July 27, 1931, in Marshall County, to Vern and Marie Hayes Caroson. He had been a school administrator. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenleaf and was a member of the American Legion, Development Company, tree Commission, Booster Club and Lions Club, all in Greenleaf. He has served on the board of directors at Citizens National Bank in Greenleaf. He also was a member of the Vermillion Alumni Association.
He married Margaret Kimball on October 24, 1954, in Vermillion. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Lora Eaton, Topeka, and Gracia Lawson, Arlington, Texas; a brother, Wally Carlson, Frankfort; a sister, Anna “Susie” Genschoreck, Frankfort; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenleaf. Burial will be in Greenleaf City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ward Funeral Home in Greenleaf.
Memorial contributions may be made to Emergency Medical Technicians in Greenleaf.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, for David James Cline, 73, of Denver, CO. Mr. Cline died February 6 in Denver.
The son of Catherine and Frank Cline, he was born February 24, 1921, in the Coal Creek Community and was reared in that community. Following military service in World War II, Mr. Cline resided in Denver where he was employed with Cudahy Meath Packing Co.
Survivors include a sister, Ann Sterling of Hobbs, NM, and several nieces and nephews.
Earlier memorial services were held in Denver.
Serena E. Cline, 96, of Onaga, died Tuesday, May 2, 1995 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga.
She was born January 8, 1899, in Wheaton, the daughter of Albert and Elisa Bergess Brunner and attended schools in Wheaton and Onaga.
She married James Cline in May 1919 in Mayetta. They were divorced. He died April 1980. They had lived on a farm in the Havensville area for several years. She also lived in Louisville, CO for 30 years, and in Mesa, AZ for three and one-half years before returning to Onaga in 1984. She moved to Golden Acres Nursing Home in March of 1987.
Mrs. Cline was preceded in death by a son, James, Cline, Jr., a daughter, Gloria Lewis, a grandson, Roger Lewis, and by two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include four sons, John Cline, Havensville, Harold Cline, Victoria; Paul Cline, Mesa, AZ; and Maurice Cline, Gilbert, AZ; one sister, Jean Epperson, Aurora, CO; 21 grandchildren 40 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6; at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga with burial in the Home Cemetery west of Onaga.
Memorials are suggested to the Home Cemetery Fund in care of Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Onaga.
Nora Rima Close, 101, Humansville, MO, died May 29, 1996, at her home. She was born May 3, a895, in Lenora, KS the daughter of Seymour N. and Lavina Moser Rima.
She was married to Cecil Close, December 27, 1920 and they were employed by the United Telephone Company. Mr. Close died April 29, 1968.
Mrs. Close remained in Onaga for many years, moving to Humansville, MO in November 1988.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Russell and Brenda Coffin, Bill Coffin, Haskell Coffin, Nelson Rima, Rosa Piper and Mary Hughes and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the Onaga Cemetery.
Onaga – Earnest E. Carl, 80, Onaga, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, at an Onaga nursing home.
Mr. Carl was a farmer and stockman and had been a partner in Carl’s Steakhouse in Onaga. He also had worked for the National Farmer’s Organization in the 1960s. He served in the Army in Panama during World War II.
He was born July 3, 1916, south of Onaga, the son of Ernest Colonel and Bertha Day Carl. He moved from Onaga to Virginia in 1965 and returned to Onaga in 1986.
Mr. Carl was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga. He was a former member of Masonic Lodge No. 188 AF&AM and the National Farmer’s Organization. He was a former member and past president of Onaga Lions Club, and past commander of Post No. 85 of the American Legion.
He was married to Alice M. McPartling Underwood on July 20, 1947, in Topeka. She died May 24, 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Chip Carl, Carmel, IN and Ken Underwood, Dallas, TX; two brothers, Grayson Carl, Onaga, and Ralph Carl, Oceanside, CA; two sisters, Mary Rowles, Fort Worth, TX and Donna Lee Valburg, Onaga; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, UCC in Onaga. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. Mr. Carl will lie in state at Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga, where relatives and friends will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Carl also will lie in state an hour before service time Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
Wm. Clak was born at Ayr, Scotland on march 2, 1845, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. J. Cornelius, on January 20, 1928 – aged 82 years, 10 months and 18 days. Mr. Clark came to Kansas with Mr. J. W. Wright, from Scotland in 1870, and purchased a farm in the Arispie neighborhood, which he still owns. He, with Mr. Wright, being carpenters, went to Chicago to help rebuild that city after the great fire of 1874. Mr. Clark worked on the railroad from Kansas City to Wallace, Kansas, until he earned money to clear his farm. He took out his naturalization papers in 1883, becoming a full-pledged citizen of the U. S. At the age of thirty-two years he was married to Miss Jane Neely, who passed away June 15 th, 1886.
On February 14, 1888, he was again married to Miss Mary Neely. In 1877 Mr. Clark settled on his farm and resided there until 1909, when he moved to Onaga, where he has since lived except for the time he was cared for at the homes of his children.
Mr. Clark is the last survivor of a family of eight children. He was the father of twelve children, one little girl dying in infancy. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Mr. Clark was a faithful, dutiful husband and a kind, loving father and was known by many as neighbor and friend.
James Cline, Jr. 70, of Oceanside, CA, formerly of Havensville, died February 28, 1990 at Tri City Hospital, Oceanside, after a long illness.
Mr. Cline was born November 23, 1919 at Havensville, KS, the son of Mrs. Serena Cline, Onaga, and the late James Cline.
Mr. Cline was a retired Captain of the United States Marines. He served in several overseas areas as well as in the States.
He was married to Jeffie McGregor, February 28, 1944, at Seneca. She survives.
Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Serena Cline, Onaga; a sister, Gloria Lewis, Casper, WY; and four brothers, John Cline of Havensville, Harold Cline of Victoria, Paul Cline of Mesa, AZ and Maurice Cline of Gilbert, AZ.
Military services were held in Oceanside on Saturday, March 3, 1990.
Onaga – Ida Nancy Chance, 77, Onaga, died Monday, August 31, 1992, at an Onaga hospital.
Mrs. Chance and her husband farmed 37 years northeast of St. Clere on Big Cross Creek. They retired in August 1973 and moved to Onaga.
She was born December 17, 1914, in Onaga the daughter of James and Lillie Stafford Arganbright.
Mrs. Chance was a member of the First Congregational Church in Onaga. She previously was active at the former Mount Olive Methodist Church in St. Clere.
She was married to Clifford William Chance January 16, 1936, in Holton. He died August 28, 1978.
Survivors include five daughters, Virginia F. McDougal, Silver Lake, R. Nadine McDougal, Onaga, Judy K. Ribelin, Valley Falls, Dorothy M. Kluender, Lansing, and Mary L. Ringel, Havensville; a sister, Psyche Fagan, Onaga; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Onaga. Burial will be in America City Cemetery north of Havensville. Mrs. Chance will lie in state from noon today until noon Wednesday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga where relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 9 p.m. and a family prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today.
Mrs. Chance will lie in state an hour before service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospital in Onaga or the American Cancer Society.
Services for Henry Thomas Clay, 50, of Topeka, will be 2 p.m. Friday in Tessendorf Mortuary Chapel at Onaga with burial in Onaga Cemetery. He died in a Topeka hospital Tuesday following an extended illness.
Mr. Clay was born April 13, 1917, near Onaga, where he was a farmer for many years.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Julia Clay of Onaga; two brothers, Lawrence Clay and Calvin Clay, both of Onaga; and four sisters, Mrs. Andrew Stadler, of 3316 Seward, Mrs. Glenn O’Donnell of Everett, WA, Mrs. Burton Silken of McCook, NE, and Mrs. Philip Spacek of Mayetta.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assn.
Harland K. Clements, 81, Onaga formerly of the Buck's Grove Community southeast of Havensville, died Wednesday, September 18, 1996, at Community Hospital, Onaga.
He was born February 27, 1915 in the Buck's Grove community, the eldest of eleven children of Ivan and Florence Nicholas Clements. He was a graduate of Havensville High School with the class of 1935.
Mr. Clements was a farmer and stockman and a crane operator. He had worked for several construction firms, including Midwest Construction of Holton, operating heavy equipment throughout Kansas. After retirement in 1973 he raised cattle at his home east of the Buck's Grove Church. He suffered from a heart ailment for many years and because of this condition, he and his wife moved to Onaga in 1984.
He was a member of the Buck's Grove United Methodist Church, Local No. 101 of Hoisting Engineers, and a former member of the Emmett Lions Club.
He was married to Rose Marie Boling on June 23, 1948 at Topeka. She survives.
Other Survivors include two sons, Harlow Clements, Shawnee, and Lynn Clements, Logan; two daughters, Deborah Paulsen, Onaga, and Therese Rieschick, Soldier; four brothers, Clinton Clements, Denver, CO; Ivan Ward Clements, Fairfield, Iowa, Dale Clements, Holton, and Gary Clements, Parkville, MO; six sisters, Grace Stotts, Topeka; Glenna Johnstone, Dover, Lorraine Oates, Houston, Rosalie Brenan and Phyllis Clements, both of Denver, and Sharon Lane, Holton; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Holton with burial in the Buck's Grove Cemetery.
Linda LaRue Carson, 64, Topeka, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Carson was a manager in the hotel and motel industry for years.
She was born February 7, 1933, in Onaga, the daughter of Henry Karl and Eula Irene Hartwich Kolterman. She attended St.. Paul’s and was graduated from Onaga Rural High School in 1951.
Mrs. Carson was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Topeka.
She married Howard C. Carson, Sr. on October 17, 1954, in Topeka. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Howard C. Carson, Jr., Omaha, NE; a daughter, Linda C. Carson, Topeka; a stepson, Steve Carson, Topeka; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Salisbury, Plano, TX; two sisters, Jeanette Tadlock, Norman, OK and Greta Anderson, Topeka; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Carson, May 31, 1968.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Topeka. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Onaga. Relatives and friends will meet at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Onaga following the burial.

Howard Clayton Carson, Sr., 73, Topeka, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Carson was a salesperson for various automobile dealerships for several years. He was a navy veteran of World War II and was decorated with a Purple Heart for wounds he suffered in combat.
He was born October 11, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Elmer and Lola Ellis Carson. He was graduated from high school in Topeka and returned To Topeka following his discharge from the Navy in 1945.
He was married to Linda LaRue Kolterman on October 14, 1954, in Topeka. She died June 18, 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Carson, Topeka, and Howard C. Carson, Jr., Omaha, NE; two daughters, Linda C. Carson, Topeka, and Marlyn Salsbury, Plano, TX; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 5905 S. W. 10 th. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at Duluth. Relatives and friends will meet a 2 p.m. Monday at the church following the burial for a fellowship luncheon.

When death relieved Dr. S. B. Chilcote of his suffering an Allwise Providence surely committed an act of mercy, because the Doctor had suffered for years with asthma and had traveled over a large portion of the United States in search of relief, but was unsuccessful, and also, because a few weeks ago the doctor’s mind had become unbalanced and he was taken to the State Hospital in Topeka where he died last Thursday from an attack of apoplexy, at the age of sixty years.
Dr. Chilcote was born in Centerville, Iowa in 1853 and died on July 3 rd 1918. He graduated from a medical college in Cincinnati in 1878 and began to practice medicine the same year at Oskaloosa, KS. In an early day he came to this county and practiced his profession both in Onaga, Garrison, and Wheaton. He was at one time one of the best professional men in the state of Kansas, and made a success of his profession.
In September 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Virginia Howard and shortly after his marriage moved to Onaga. To this union was born one child, but it died in infancy, and the mother died in 1879. On May 3d, 1884, Mr. Chilcote was again married, this time to Miss Francis Ingalsbe at Westmoreland, this county. Mrs. Chilcote died at the family home in Wheaton two years ago. To this union were born four sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter dying in infancy. The remaining children are: John, Clyde, Beula, and Dayton Chilcote all of this locality. The deceased also leaved three sisters and one brother to mourn his demise. They are: J. H. Chilcote, of Carlisle, KS; Mrs. Walter Payne, of Burlingame, KS; Mrs. Charles Woodward, of Richland, KS; and Mrs. Mame Curtis, of Beeler, KS. All of the above children and relatives excepting the latter sister, were present at the funeral. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church in an early day, and was also a high degree Mason. He was highly educated and stood high in medical circles in the State.
The remains were brought to Onaga last Friday evening and the funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday morning at nine o’clock, Rev. Dailey, the pastor, presiding. Interment was made in the Onaga cemetery beside the departed wife and children. The sorrowing relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in this city and community.
Hiram Wayne Channel, 89, Onaga, died Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at the Onaga Hospital.
He was born June 15, 1909, at America City, the son of Hiram Arthur and Mary Rhodes Bottom Channel. Wayne graduated from Havensville High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Washburn University, his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Kansas, and did work beyond his Master’s at Peru College.
Wayne was a member of Masonic Lodge #20, Circleville, American Legion Post 37, and the Royal Arch Masons Chapter #82, and the Soldier United Methodist Church.
He served in the U. S. Army from May 1942 to June 1946. He was a staff member of the Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia and left the service with the rank of Captain.
Wayne taught in rural schools and spent 27 years of his career as principal/superintendent of Kansas and Nebraska schools.
Wayne was married to Bessie L. Passmore July 10, 1968 at Belleville. She preceded him in death on February 13, 1998.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy McKee, Topeka; one brother, Frank Channel, Centralia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton. Burial will be in America City Cemetery.
Mrs. E. C. Carl [Bertha] of Onaga passed away Monday night at Golden Acres Nursing Home at the age of 77, following an extended illness. She was born January 4, 1896 on a farm south of Onaga and was the daughter of May and Frank Day.
At the age of five she moved, with her parents, to Salem, WA. Her father was killed in a railway accident when she was 12 years old and year later the family moved back to Onaga where she spent the remainder of her life.
She was married to Ernest Colonel Carl, December 6, 1907.
Mrs. Carl was a member of the Onaga Congregational Church and was active in the Ladies Guild of the church as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of the Tuesday afternoon Bridge Club.
Survivors include her widower, E. C. Carl of the home in Onaga; three daughters, Frances (Mrs. Clifford G. Snyder) and Mary (Mrs. Barcley Rowles), both of Topeka, and Donna Lee (Mrs. Lawrence Valburg) of Onaga; four sons, Nate, Grayson and Earnest Carl, all of Onaga and Ralph Carl of Spokane, WA; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Crum of Onaga and Mrs. Pose Sumner of Emporia; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Opal Grover, preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held today (Thursday) at 2:00 o’clock at the Congregational Church. Interment will be made in the Onaga Cemetery.
Memorial services for Ernest Colonel Carl were Sunday, December 29 in Onaga’s First Congregational Church. Burial was in the Onaga cemetery.
Mr. Carl died December 25 at Golden Acres Nursing Home. He had been in failing health for some time.
He was born June 12, 1884 in Wyanett, IL the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathional Carl. He spent his adult life in the Onaga community. He was a retired farmer and stockman.
On December 6, 1907, he was married to Bertha Ella Day who preceded him in death June 10, 1963.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Frances) Snyder and Mrs. Barclay (Mary) Rowles, both of Topeka, and Mrs. Lawrence (Donna Lee) Valburg, of Onaga; four sons, Nate Carl of Wichita, Grayson Carl, Onaga, Earnest Carl, Gordonsville, VA, and Ralph D. Carl, Chester, PA; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was married to Libbie Bairow of Wamego, KS who also survives him.
Mrs. Nate (Floy) Carl Dies in Wichita – Services were at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 11, at Tessendorf Mortuary Chapel I Onaga for Mrs. Floy E. Carl, 71, Wichita, who died Thursday, January 7, at a Wichita hospital.
She was born October 31, 1910, at Onaga, the daughter of Charles and Minnie Fields Witham. She had lived in Onaga and Topeka before moving to Wichita in 1965.
She was married to Nate Carl on December 7, 1930. He survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marlene Kay Ratcliff, Oklahoma City, OK and Mrs. Marcia Rae Dulac, Derby; a son, Charles L. Carl, Singapore; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Wright, Topeka; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Memorial services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church in Onaga for Emile F. Cass, who died early Sunday morning at Community Hospital. He was 71 years of age.
Members of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Topeka, the Onaga Masonic Lodge, Onaga Legion, and Onaga IOOF assisted in services at the church and also at the place of interment, Onaga Cemetery.
He was born January 16, 1893, on a farm near Onaga and had spent his entire life as a farmer in this vicinity. He was a county agent for the agriculture department for a number of years prior to his retirement in December 1963.
Mr. Cass was well known and greatly respected in Pottawatomie County, and active in the many service and fraternal organizations in and around Onaga. He was a member of the Onaga IOOF, Onaga Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Lone Mound Grange, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Topeka, Orient of Kansas.
Survivors include his wife, Waunita, of the home here; a son, Vincent of Moscow, Idaho; two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Rollins, Valley Falls, and Mrs. Marily Counter, Rifle, CO; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Bonjour, Topeka; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lizzie Cass, Wheaton, and 13 grandchildren.
Ida Theresa Hartwick Cass, daughter of Frederick and Sophia Hartwich, was born March 17, 1871 on the farm about 4 ½ miles northwest of Onaga, KS, and passed away suddenly of a stroke of paralysis, at the home of her brother, Herman Hartwich, about a half mile from where she was born, on January 31, 1944 at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 14 days. When a small child she was baptized and at the age of 16 years was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Duluth, and remained a firm believer in the Christian faith until the time of her death.
She was left motherless at the age of 15, and being next to the eldest of 7 children, much of the responsibility of rearing the younger children fell upon her. On July 15, 1888 she was married to Miles Dighton Cass. This union was blessed with three children: William Henry, who passed away September 9, 1920, Sarah (Mrs. Jaster Bonjour) of Centralia, and Emile F. of the home place. They resided on the farm north of Onaga all their married life with the exception of two years, until March 23, 1931, when her husband passed away. After his death she still remained on the farm until 1939, when she went to live with her brother Herman where she resided until she was called to the home of her sister Annie because of the illness of her husband, and remained there most of the time until the death of both the sister and the husband. She then returned to the home of her brother, Herman, and remained until her death. She was always willing to lend a hand to those in trouble. She had a good-natured disposition which won for her many friends, and her passing is deeply felt by her relatives and friends. She had been a member of the Onaga Rebekah Lodge for many years.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her daughter and son; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lizzie Cass, of Wheaton; three brothers, Herman and Robert of Onaga, and Edward Hartwich of Wamego; and the following step-brothers and step-sisters: Gustav Schaenke of Gridley; Quincy Howell of Emmett; Mrs. Emma Hartwick of Colorado; Mrs. Anna Estep of Belvue; also 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives. Three sisters, Mrs. Helena Brunkow, Mrs. Annie Brunner and Mrs. Lizzie Buzbee, and two step-sisters, Mrs. Marie Minsch and Mrs. Addie Heddon, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 2 nd, at 2:30, at the Tessendorf Chapel in Onaga. Services were conducted by Rev. Hildebrandt. The remains were laid to rest in the Onaga Cemetery beside her husband.
Mrs. Ferne Eustis Callahan, 71, Tucson, AZ died Sunday evening, March 29, at a Tucson hospital where she had been a patient for several weeks. She had cancer.
She was born march 19, 1916 at Onaga, the daughter of Samuel and Lydia Schwartz Eustis. She attended Onaga schools and was graduated from Onaga High School in 1934. She was employed by United Telephone Company and Kansas Power and Light Co. in Onaga.
Mrs. Callahan was a talented pianist and played in dance bands in the area for many years. She was a member of the Congregational Church and Order of Eastern Star No. 71, both at Onaga.
She was married to Holly Callahan March 30, 1962 at Abilene. He survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gwen Bohm, Cheney; a son, Don Dodds, Westmoreland; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Robison, Onaga, and a twin, Mrs. Phyllis Gendre, Henderson, Nevada; and five grandchildren.
Following cremation, memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the Shrine Temple in Tucson.
Mrs. Elise Pauline “Lizzie” Cass, 97, Onaga, died Thursday, February 7, 1991 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga.
Mrs. Cass had been a seamstress at the Onaga sportswear Co.
She was born December 1, 1893, northwest of Onaga, the daughter of John G. and Pauline F. Abitz Marten, and grew up in the Onaga community.
Mrs. Cass was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth, and the Ladies Aid of the church.
She was married to Willie H. Cass April 22, 1914, in Duluth. He died September 9, 1920. She also was preceded in death by an infant son and a daughter, Mildred Berges, on December 23, 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Luella Wrosch, Wheaton; three sisters, Caroline Falk, Amanda Honig and Olga Marten, all of Onaga; two brothers, Richard Marten, Onaga, and Eitel “Ike” Marten, Hope; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 10, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
LAST RITES TUESDAY FOR MRS. ALICE CLARK – Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Clark were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Congregational Church, conducted by the Rev. Millard Marshall. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Mrs. Clark, who was 65 years of age, passed away Sunday morning, December 27, at Community Hospital in Onaga, the victim of cancer.
She attended the Neuchatel School, in which community she was born, and the Onaga schools. After attending Teacher’s Institute at Seneca, she taught for two years in the same school where she began her education. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Onaga and served as treasurer and as a member of the finance committee of that church. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid. Mrs. Clark was a charter member of the Onaga Home Demonstration Unit and the American Legion Auxiliary, and was very active in community health campaigns such as the Tuberculosis, Red Cross and Cancer drives. It was her request that friends, instead of sending flowers for her memorial service donate the funds to the cancer drive.
In 1914 she was married to Armand Bonjour, who preceded her in death in 1947.
In 1952 she was married to David Clark, who survives her. Other survivors include a son, Everett Bonjour, and a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Hartwich, both of Onaga; her mother, Mrs. Laura Vautravers; a brother, Walter Vautravers; her step-children Delbert Clark, Cooperstown, North Dakota, Mrs. Betty Penny, Ames, Iowa, Lawrence Clark, Onaga, Mrs. Loral Kauffman, McDook, Nebraska, Edward Clark, Albany, Georgia, and Ross Clark, Onaga; eight grandchildren and twelve step-grandchildren.
Clara Mable Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam R. Walker, was born September 14, 1874, at Arispie, south of Onaga. She attended school at Vienna and Onaga.
In 1894 she was united in marriage to W. S. Clark of Onaga. They lived in this community most of their married life. One daughter, Mrs. Horace Miller of Onaga, was born to this union. After the death of Mr. Clark in 1930, she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Miller and family.
Mrs. Clark was a member of the Onaga Chapter, No. 71, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Congregational Church of Onaga, in which she was an active member until ill health kept her from attending. She was always ready to help anyone in sickness and bereavement.
After a lengthy illness, she passed away very quietly on April 4, 1962 at the age of 87 hears, six months and 21 days.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, two grandchildren, Donald Miller of Wichita, and Mrs. J. e. Johns of Granada Hills, CA four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Franklin Clark Dies in Albuquerque, N.M. – The body of Franklin D. Clark, 63, was found in his living quarters, May 13, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The remains were cremated in Albuquerque and transported to Onaga Cemetery for interment, May 21, without services.
He was born May 26, 1918, in Onaga and attended grade and high school here. After early graduation from Onaga High, he attended Kansas State University at Manhattan. He was managing a 32-unit apartment complex in Albuquerque at the time of his death.
Services are Thursday for Mrs. Velma Clark – Mrs. Velma Clark, 88, Onaga, died Monday, June 8, at a Wamego nursing home where she had been two months.
She was born July 20, 1892, on a farm five miles south of Onaga, the daughter of Moses and Alunda Hays Day, and lived in Onaga most of her life. She spent eight years in Albuquerque, NM. She attended Onaga schools and was graduated from Onaga High School.
Mrs. Clark was a charter member of the Mutual Benefit Club and assisted for many years with the 4-H Club work. She was employed for a time as a nurse’s aide and cook at the old, Onaga Hospital.
She was married to James Clark in October 1915 at Topeka. He died November 3, 1941. A son, Kenneth Clark, died in 1922.
Survivors include a son, Franklin Clark, Wamego; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Mohr, Harrison, IN; a sister, Mrs. Lorna Malone, Onaga; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Cremation followed Mrs. Clark’s death. Inurnment and memorial services are being held at 10:00 a.m. today (Thursday) at Onaga Cemetery. The Rev. Millard Marshall will conduct the service.
The community was shocked early Saturday evening by the sudden death of Mrs. David Clark, at her home in Onaga. She had not been in the best of health for the past year, but her condition was in no way considered serious. The bereaved family have the sympathy of everyone.
Margaret Alice Nightingale was born September 29, 1901, near Centralia, Kansas, the second daughter of Ed. And Oral Nightingale. She attended grade school near Centralia and at the Canfield school near Wheaton. She graduated from the Onaga High School in 1919. She taught the Arispie School for three terms.
On August 3, 1922 she was married to David Clark. They settled in the Arispie neighborhood where they reared their six children. She was a leader in the Arispie 4-H club for a number of years and also took an active part in the Home Demonstration Unit. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Onaga where she belonged to the Ladies Aid, and attended and taught the Adult Bible Class. She was active as a deaconess.
Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Clark retired to a beautiful home in Onaga, which she enjoyed so much. She loved her garden and her flowers. On June 17, 1950, she was called to her eternal rest and reached the age of 48 years, 8 months and 18 days.
She is survived by her husband; four sons, Delbert of Cooperstown, North Dakota, Lawrence of Wamego, and Edward and Ross of the home; also two daughters, Mrs. Betty Penny of Ames Iowa and Mrs. Loral Kauffman in Indianaola, Nee; her mother, Mrs. Oral Nightingale; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Rollenhagen of Westmoreland and Mrs. Mary Schwartz of Onaga; two brothers, Ben Nightingale of Clay Center and Albert Nightingale of Lebanon, OR. She is also survived by four grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the First Congregational Church by the Rev. Heinz Schwarz. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.

John R. Clark, second eldest son of William and Jane Neely Clark, was born February 27, 1880, on the Clark homestead in the Arispie community southwest of Onaga, and passed away at the Genn hospital July 6, 1942, at the age of 62 years, after several months suffering from heart disease. With the exception of a few years employed in Kansas City at the commission yards his entire life was spent in various communities of Pottawatomie County.
November 25, 1908 , he was united in marriage to Mabel Brown of Delia, KS. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Hazel Flinn of Laclede, Jean, Marvin, and Phyllis of the home.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by three grandchildren, Myron Lee, Donald and Barbara Rae Flinn; four brothers, William and Dave of Wheaton, Aaron of Dodge City, and Cecil of Manhattan; Jim preceded him in death a few months ago; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Cornelius and Mrs. Mabel Cornelius of Westmoreland, Mrs. Agnes Canfield of Topeka, Mrs. Bessie Mack of Havensville, and Mrs. Pearl Guy of Manhattan, a step-mother, Mrs. Mary Jackman of Onaga, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Until the past few years he was actively engaged as a stockman, and through this interest made many friends who greatly admired and respected him. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Stewart funeral home and were in charge of the Rev. T. W. Twining. Burial was in the Fox Cemetery south of Wheaton.
Mrs. Sarah J. Clark, who had been ill in a hospital in Topeka for several weeks, passed away in that institution on Wednesday of last week. The deceased was born in Indiana in 1850 and passed away to her reward on July 2, 1919, at the age of 69 years. The family moved from Indiana to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1857, and then moved to a farm three miles south of Onaga, Kansas, in 1870.
Mrs. Clark was one of the charter members of the Congregational Church of Vienna, having united with that church when it was first organized in 1871, and later her membership was transferred to the Congregational Church of Onaga, of which she was a member at the time of her death.
The deceased was united in marriage to Andrew Clark, in 1881. To this union was born one son, who was killed in a railroad accident in 1911. Mrs. Clark was bereaved of her husband in 1899. She is survived by three brothers and two sisters, as follows: William Grossnickle, of San Antonio, TC, Mrs. Hanna M. Elder of Lacine, KS, Mrs. Mary A. Kurtz, of Hartford, IA, and John and Sidney Grossnickle, both of Onaga.
Mrs. Clark enjoyed the acquaintance and friendship of a wide circle of friends who will always remember her for her pleasant ways and many deeds of kindness.
The remains were brought to Onaga last Thursday evening and were taken to the home of Miss Sarah and Seth Grossnickle. The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church on Saturday morning and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. M. Good, and interment was given in the family lot in the Onaga Cemetery.
William Dee (Bill) Clark, 28, Wheaton, died early Sunday morning following a pick-up accident. It was reported that the vehicle rolled off the highway and down an embankment about a mile and a half south of Corning on Highway 63.
Mr. Clark was first taken to Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, Seneca, and later transferred to St. Francis Hospital, Topeka where he was pronounced dead.
Mr. Clark was born march 8, 1953 at Westmoreland and lived all of his life in the Wheaton and Onaga communities. He attended elementary and high school in Onaga.
He was a farmer and stockman and worked at the Onaga livestock Sale Co. for several years.
Survivors include a son, Russell Clark and a daughter, Renee Clark, both of Westmoreland; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Clark, Wheaton; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Valburg, Onaga and Mrs. Judy Perry, Beaverton, OR; and his grandparents, David and Carrie Clark, Onaga, and Louis and Agnes Yonning, Westmoreland.
Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Onaga. Burial was at Onaga Cemetery.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church for Aaron Clark, 64 of Topeka. Mr. Clark passed away Sunday in a Topeka hospital. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
He was born April 15, 1901 at Onaga to William and Mary Neily Clark. He had lived in Topeka since 1943.
Mr. Clark was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a veteran of World War I. He was employed at the Topeka VA Hospital for ten years before his retirement in 1955.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Clark of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin Foster and Mrs. Robert Weinkauf, both of Topeka; two brothers, David Clark of Onaga and Cecil Clark of Pomona, CA; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Cornelius of Westmoreland, Mrs. Agnes Canfield of Topeka and Mrs. Pearl Fredrickson of Henderson, Nevada; and four grandchildren.
William Clark, Jr. son of William, Sr. and Jane Clark, passed away after a brief illness, at St. Francis hospital, Topeka, KS on Sunday, November 7, 1965.
He was born May 10, 1878 in the Arispie neighborhood, Pottawatomie County. He took pride in relating his age of 87 years to his many friends who realized his activeness.
He was united in marriage to Bertha E. Neely, February 15, 1921. To them was born a daughter, Arlene, and a son, Wilfred.
Will or “Bill” as he was known to his many friends, was noted for being happy; getting the most from life; showing his loyalty to friends, and his sincere love and interest in his family. He had spent years as a farmer and stockman in Pottawatomie County before moving To Topeka in1948.
Preceding him in death were a son, Ralph, in 1951; his parents: three sisters, Mary Cornelius, Bessie Mack and Isla; two brothers, John and James.
One of his pride and joys was the presence of his grandchildren, Janice, Marilyn, Dean, Nancy, Evelyn, Max, Chet, Connie, Barbara, Shirley and Ivan.
Those remaining of his family to suffer his loss are his wife, Bertha, and a daughter, Arlene Bernhardt of the home; a son, Wilfred and family of Wichita; his brothers, David, Onaga, Cecil, Pomona, CA; Arron, Topeka, his sisters Agnes Canfield, Topeka, Mabel Cornelius, Westmoreland; Pearl Fredrickson, Henderson, Nevada; his grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at the Wheaton Congregational Church at Wheaton, KS, on November 10, 1965, with the Rev. Moorman R. Work of the Oakland Christian Church, Topeka, officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Union Ridge Cemetery. Mrs. Vivian Harrington was pianist. Pallbearers, old friends of the family were: Leo Orsborn, Cloyde M. Henderson, Roy R. Pfrang, John W. Zabel, Don Reves and Raymond Reves.
Services were at 10:30 Saturday morning at the Council Grove United Methodist Church for Earl E. Clymer, 49, of Kelso. Mr. Clymer died Thursday in a Council Grove hospital after an illness of four months.
He was born August 22, 1925, in Kelso and lived in Morris County most of his life.
He was a member of Council Grove Saddle Club, Herington Saddle Club, and was a director of the Eastern Kansas Horsemen’s Association.
He was married to Rosalie M. Rezac of Onaga on August 6, 1966, in Abilene. She survives at the home.
Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Clymer, Council Grove; and three sisters, Mrs. Pauline Tally and Admire, Mrs. Maxine Edmonds of Council Grove, and Mrs. Velma Fraley of Kansas City.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Council Grove.
Father of a Wire Service Editor Dies in California – L. C. Colwell, 72 years old, died yesterday in Chula Vista, CA. He was the father of Ward E. Colwell, 5917 Central Street, Southwestern division radio news editor for the United Press, who has been in Chula Vista since his father suffered a stroke April 14.
L. C. Colwell retired from the post office department in Onaga, KS in 1936 after serving for many years o the carrier examination board. He also leaves his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Colwell of the home and a sister, Mrs. Florence Johnston, Berea, O. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Chula Vista, with burial in Onaga.
Graveside services for Mrs. Agnes C. Canfield, 96, of Topeka were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, at the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery. Mrs. Canfield died Friday, November 5, at a Topeka convalescent center after a long illness.
The daughter of William and Jane Neely Clark, she was born February 19, 1886, at Onaga.
Mrs. Canfield and her husband farmed in the Wheaton area many years before they moved To Topeka in 1924.
She was a member of the Congregational Church at Wheaton.
She was married to Carl Clifton Canfield on February 27, 1907 at Onaga. He died April 14, 1976. A son, Harold Canfield, died in 1960.
Survivors include a foster daughter, Mrs. Mildred Buck, Topeka; a brother, David Clark, Onaga; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Frederickson of Henderson, Nevada; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Delbert Channel, 73, of Havensville, died Saturday at Community Hospital in Onaga after a long illness. He had been in the hospital for long periods of time in the last several years and was re-admitted to the hospital about a week before his death. He had suffered several cerebral hemorrhages.
He was born October 9, 1895, at America City north of Havensville and spent most of his life in the Havensville community. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Havensville United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Onaga Lodge No. 188, AF&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Esther Channel of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Doris McKee of Wetmore, and Mrs. Myra Sauvage of Havensville; a son, Dale Channel of Rossville; two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Frantz of Junction City and Mrs. Dorothy McKee of Seneca; two brothers, Wayne Channel of Byron, NE, and Frank Channel of Soldier; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist church in Havensville. Interment was in the Havensville cemetery.
James M. Clark was born September 15, 1891, near Arispie, KS, and passed away at Christ’s Hospital in Topeka on November 3, 1941, at the age of 49 years, 1 month and 11 days.
He was the son of William and Mary Clark, and was educated in the Arispie grade school and Onaga high school, and has spent his entire life in this community.
On October 15, 1941 he was married to Velma Day, she survives. To this union were born three children, Kenneth James, who preceded his father in death in 1922, Franklin D. and Barbara Lee of the home. He is also survived by his mother and five brothers and six sisters and their families.
Mr. Clark was always active in the affairs of the community, especially in 4-H club, farm bureau and county fair activities. He served on the Victory grade school board for a number of years, and was one of the community’s most successful farmers.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church in Onaga, yesterday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Wright Horton of Frankfort. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Orville Merle Channel, 82, of Wamego, died March 16, 1982, after a lengthy illness. He died at the College Hill Nursing Home in Manhattan where he had been a resident for the past few years.
Mr. Channel was born September 28, 1899, at America City, son of Norman H. and Maraga Sarah Lewis.
In 1957, he moved to Wamego from Westmoreland. He [was] a Pottawatomie County coroner for about 10 years, and he was the director of Pottawatomie County Civil Defense for about 12 years.
He was married to Margaret Stotts, May 19, 1944, at Wamego. She died March 30, 1972.
Mr. Channel was a member of the U. S. Marines in World War II. Memberships included the Masonic Lodge No. 75 AF&AM, the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 76, and a lifetime membership with the Wamego Historical Society, all of Wamego. He also was a member of the Blackjack Post 260 of the American Legion of St. George.
Survivors include one brother, Clyde Channel, Englewood, CO; and one sister, Mrs. Stella Manuel, Havensville. He was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Lota Channel and Roy Channel.
Services were at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 19, 1982, at the Stewart Funeral Home. Burial was in the Wamego City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle M. Chapman, a resident of Orange County, CA, for 62 years were held at Santa Ana, CA on July 10.
Mrs. Chapman, 87, died at a Newport Beach hospital July 8.
She was the widow of the late C. H. Chapman, who operated the Onaga Lumber Company for a number of years.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by her daughters, Hazel Dane, Seal Beach, CA; Elva Ellis, Santa Ana and Vyola Dixon, Dana Point; two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Grover, Santa Ana, and Mrs. Arminta Day, Wellington, KS; two brothers, Alpha Hayes, Spokane, WA and Orville Hayes, Braman, OK; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Veryl Channel, 21, of rural Soldier, died last Saturday in a Topeka hospital after being injured earlier in a farm tractor accident at his home. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Channel, donated his kidneys to the Kansas university Medical Center to be used for kidney transplant.
Veryl had been working in a field adjacent to his home when his tractor became “stuck in a wet spot”. He had gone for held and it is reported that he and a neighbor were returning on another large tractor when Veryl fell off. He apparently rolled forward with the dual wheel, which is reported to have run over his head.
He was taken by a Seneca ambulance to the intensive care unit of Stormont-Vail where he died about seven hours later.
He was born November 28, 1952 at Onaga and spent most of his life in the America City community, north and east of Havensville. He was a graduate of Onaga High, class of 1971, and a member of the Onaga high basketball team that entered State Tournament play in 1970. After high school graduation, he attended Neosho County Community Junior College at Chanute.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Mary Ann Channel and Virginia Lee Channel of the home; three brothers, Arthur H. Channel, Oxford, MS and Martin and Rodney Channel, of the home; two half-brothers, Rex Taylor, Kiowa, and F. Darrell Taylor, Rossville.
Veryl was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Corning.
Funeral services were conducted for Charles H. Chapman, aged 69, on September 19 th at the Smith & Tuthill mortuary in Santa Ana, CA. Mr. Chapman, a widely known businessman and former city and county official, of Santa Ana, died September 16 th at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Dane, 904 N. Flower St.
Mr. Chapman was at one time a citizen of Onaga, working in the Trout and Leach Lumberyard under Abe Myers, the manager. He had operated a lumber business in Santa Ana for nearly 40 years, and served for 8 years as City Council man and 8 years as County Appraiser for all land taken by the government to build Prado Dam. He retired from public life until 1942 when he was named county purchasing agent. He resigned because of illness.
He leaves his widow Myrtle M; three daughters, Mrs. Dane and Mrs. Elva E. Ill of Santa Ana, and Mrs. Viola Dixon of Laguna Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Etchison of Santa Ana and Mrs. Ida Cochran of Riverside, and two brothers, Fred of Santa Ana and Edgar of Orange.
Patricia Lee, daughter of Martin and Veda Mae Armstrong, was born in America City neighborhood January 10, 1930. She, with her parents, her brother and sisters lived on the farm, which was homesteaded by Jim Armstrong, father of Ferd Armstrong, known so well by many older residents.
The children of Martin and Veda Mae started their education in the America City School. Later they attended Davenport and Havensville.
Patty, as she was known affectionately by her family and friends, was a graduate of Havensville High School with the class of 1948. Following graduation she attended summer school at Kansas State College and taught two terms at Buck's Grove District School.
In the Buck's Grove Church, on a Sabbath afternoon, August 7, 1949, Patricia Lee became the bride of Ivan Ward Clements. The beautiful but simple ceremony performed in the presence of family and friends united their love and they accepted the vows of loyalty and devotion in marriage.
The young couple lived on farms near Havensville, until two years ago when they moved to their present home on English Ridge. The two sons and little daughter who came to bless their lives were taught the principles of right and will always have memories of a Christian home and the love of devoted parents. Patty was a dedicated home builder and was faithful in the work that made their home comfortable and blessed. She shared the love of growing things with her husband, and flowers became her great interest and pleasure.
The family are members of the Havensville Methodist Church and Patty was faithful in the duties of the Sunday School and the Women’s Society of Christian Service.
Left to mourn her untimely death are her husband Ward; Ricky Lynn and Micky Ray, her sons, and Janell Kay, the little daughter; her parents and sisters, Treva Joy Mumaw, Topeka and Janice Mae Chrest, Belvue; her brothers, Max of Brownsville, TN and James Leroy and Phil Dale of the home in Havensville; her grandfather, aunts and uncles and many other relatives.
At the age of 31 years, 6 months, 12 days, life on this earth ended Monday evening, July 24, in the Johnstone home in Topeka. She was tenderly nursed many long weeks by her husband and parents and other relatives. She was truly grateful for all the love and kindness shown to her and to her family. Her failing strength was used to write little notes to thank those who expressed their concern by their many gifts and letters. Only those who cared for her knew the patience, the love and gratitude she wanted to express.
Her life was short in years and our weary minds are questioning but sure that the “pure in heart” have a place prepared for them in God’s great plan of life and eternity.
William A. Chappell, 72, of Des Moines, Iowa, died of pneumonia on March 7 at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
He was a retired machine instructor of the Globe Machinery Co. Mr. Chappell spent his years of retirement keeping up his home and garden. He was considered a model family man, quiet and kind, a perfect husband and father.
William was the son of James Madison and Cynthia Chappell. He was born in Marshall, Missouri. His family moved to Kansas when he was a young boy. He was a graduate of Ottawa University. At this school he met Glee Stallard of Onaga whom he chose for his wife. They were classmates of the 1911 class of O. U.
In the fall of 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Chappell came to care for Mrs. Chappell’s father, A. L. Stallard. They made their home on the farm with him for several years during which time they made many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Glee, of the home; three children, Mary Elizabeth Burton, Ames, Iowa, Norma Glee Khols, Des Moines and William M. Chappell, Akron, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Wingert of Wellsville, KS, a brother, Percy Chappell of Cortez, CO and five grandchildren.
Mr. Chappell was buried at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Des Moines.
John B. Chilcote, eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. S. B. Chilcote, was born at Onaga, KS, on February 18, 1887, and passed away at St. Louis hospital, June 17, 1941, aged 54 years, 4 months.
He was united in marriage to Mrs. Evelyn McGinnis on December 20, 1917 at Mankato, KS. Mrs. Chilcote passed away May 5, 1939 and the eldest daughter, Wilma preceded him in death on May 2, 1940.
The children remaining to mourn his passing are: Betty, William, Maxine, and Darlene, of the home; a sister, Mrs. L. J. Woodburn and a brother, Clyde.
For the past 30 years Mr. Chilcote had been connected with the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. in the capacity of bridge and building foreman.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Onaga, the Masonic Lodge at St. Marys and the Scottish Rite at Hastings, NE. He can always be remembered as a kind and loving father.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Otis Bussart at the V. M. Hill Funeral Home in St. Louis. Interment was made in the Onaga Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.
Louise Junod, daughter of Alex and Julia Junod, was born at Neuchatel, KS, October 17, 1884, and died at Onaga, Kansas, January 1, 1943 at the age of 58 years, 2 months, and 14 days. She was married to John Chavanne in May 1908, and has spent her entire life in the vicinity where she was born.
Mrs. Chavanne was one of the unfortunate folks to whom it is never given to enjoy good health. While active and energetic, she was always a sufferer from various ailments. But through it all she carried on with a Christian fortitude which made her life not a burden to those around her, but rather did she give of her strength and time to be a good neighbor, a loving wife, a patient Christian. She was a member of the Congregational Church affiliated with the Church of Neuchatel.
She leaves to mourn her going her bosom companion of many years, John Chavanne, a brother, Alfred Junod of Neuchatel,**
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church on Monday afternoon in charge of Rev. W. A. Lower. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Mary Ann Norton was born in Crown Point, Indiana, July 22, 1845 and died at Topeka, Kansas, August 22, 1936 at the age of 91 years and 1 month.
Her early life was spent in the vicinity of Crown Point. On May 21, 1866, she was married to Nathaniel S. Carl, in Valparaiso, Indiana, who preceded her in death on January 11, 1927. To this union were born seven children, one son, Harry dying in infancy.
In the fall of 1884 they moved from Wyanet, Illinois, to Onaga, Kansas, where they lived until Mr. Carl’s death after which she made her home in Topeka with her daughter, Mrs. Wasson.
She leaves to mourn her death, the following children: Mrs. Effa G. Irish, Santa Ana, CA; Calvin C. Carl, Council Grove, KS; Mrs. Nell Groomer, Manhattan, KS; Mrs. Hattie Wasson, Topeka, KS; Earl M. Carl, Grants Pass, OR; and Ernest C. Carl, Onaga; twenty three grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Federated church Sunday afternoon in charge of Dr. Thomas C. Hinkle. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Clay, 91, Onaga were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 7, at Tessendorf Mortuary. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
Mrs. Clay died Sunday, June 5 at community hospital.
The daughter of Xavier and Louise Menery Dulac, she was born March 27, 1892 on a farm north of Onaga and spent her life in the Onaga area.
She was married to John Clay in September 1911. He died in 1957. Two sons, Ross and Henry Clay, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Calvin and Lawrence Clay, both of Onaga; four daughters. Mrs. Cathern O’Donnell, Everett, WA; Mrs. Florence Filkin, McCook, NE; Mrs. Anna Mae Spacek, Mayetta, and Rosemary Stadler, Topeka; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Onaga – Alice Alfreda Chatelain, 87, formerly of Onaga, died Sunday, July 13, at an Eskridge nursing home.
She was born March 29, 1899, near Neuchatel in Nemaha County, the daughter of Armond and Rosalie Gilson Chatelain. She spent her life in the Neuchatel community and in Seneca before she moved to Onaga. She graduated from high school in Onaga.
Miss Chatelain was a member of the First Congregational Church in Onaga.
Several nieces and nephews survive.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church in Onaga. Burial will be in Neuchatel Cemetery. Miss Chatelain will lie in state from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
David Clark, 92, Onaga, died Monday, February 24, 1986, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Clark was a retired farmer and stockman. He first worked for an older brother, John, Clark, after World War I until he purchased the family farm in 1928. He retired in 1948 and moved into Onaga.
He was an Army veteran of World War I, having served with the First Anti-Aircraft Battalion in the American Expeditionary Forces in France.
He was born August 19, 1893, southwest of Onaga, one of 12 children born to William and Mary Neeley Clark. He attended Aristie and Onaga schools and was graduated in 1913 from Onaga High School where he played basketball.
Mr. Clark was a member of the Congregational Church, a charter member of Onaga Post 85 of the American Legion, and a former 4-H leader, Sherman Township board member and a former Aristie School board member.
He was married to Margaret Nightengale August 3, 1922, at Onaga. She died June 17, 1950. He was married to Alice Bonjour of Onaga in May 1952. She died in December 1959. He was married to Carrie Ringelman of Onaga July 4, 1966. She survives.
Other Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Betty Penny, Ames Iowa, and Mrs. Loral Kauffman, Morrison, CO; four sons, Delbert Clark, Cooperstown, N.D. Lawrence Clark, Onaga, and Edward Clark and Ross Clark, both of Dallas, Texas; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Sylvia Galloway, Onaga, and Mrs. Victorine Wilson, Norwalk, Iowa; two stepsons, Clarence Ringelman, Fairborn, Ohio, and Freddie Ringelman, Onaga; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carrie I. Clark – Onaga – Mrs. Carrie I. Clark, 83, Onaga, died Wednesday, April 29, 1987, at an Onaga hospital.
Mrs. Clark and her husband operated a restaurant in Onaga during the 1940’s. She later was a cook in Onaga schools and at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga many years.
She was born May 5, 1903, northeast of Onaga, the daughter of Fred and Annie L. Kolterman Williams.
She was married to Andrew Ringleman of Onaga April 2, 1919. He died November 17, 1960. She was married to David Clark of Onaga July 4, 1966. He died February 25, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Victorine Wilson, Norwalk, Iowa; two sons, Clarence Ringleman, Fairborn, Ohio; and Fred Ringleman, Onaga; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Betty Penny, Ames, Iowa, and Mrs. Laurel Kaufman, Morrison, CO; four stepsons, Delbert Clark, Cooperstown, ND, Lawrence Clark, Wheaton, and Edward Clark and Ross Clark, both of Dallas, TX; a sister, Mrs. Mandy Inscho, Topeka; six grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial will be in Onaga Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Onaga Senior Center or Onaga Community Hospital. Tessendorf Funeral Home in Onaga is in charge of arrangements.
Services will be held today (Thursday), May 2, a968 at the Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga for Cecil L. Close, 72, who died Monday at his home in Onaga. Burial will be in the Onaga Cemetery.
He was born April 12, 1896 near Eudora. He was a veteran of World War I. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and later was employed 34 years by United Telephone Company before he retired in 1957. He worked at Onaga, Goff, Holton, Westmoreland and Wetmore before he returned to Onaga.
He was a member of Post No. 85 of the American Legion, Onaga Lodge No. 188, AF&AM and IOOF Lodge No. 234, all of Onaga.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nora Close, of the home; and two sisters, Mrs. Irene Brooks, Chicago, ILL; and Mrs. Hazel Hiffhine, Los Angeles, CA.
Calvin C. Carl of Wilsey passed away Thursday, June 25, at his home at the age of 92. He was a brother of E. C. Carl and Mrs. Nell Groomer, both of Onaga.
Mr. Carl was born August 14, 1871 in Indiana and came to Onaga with his parents. He moved from here to Wilsey about 1920 and was employed at a Council Grove mortuary until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War I.
Besides the brother and sister here, he is survived by his wife, Agnes, of the home; two sons, one daughter and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, at Council Grove, with burial in the Council Grove Cemetery.
Roy, son of Norman and Katie Channel, was born January 13, 1884. His mother’s life ended when his began, and his grandparents, Mary Ann and Abner Channel reared him.
The family home in America City north of Havensville was the center of church activity as grandfather Channel was a pioneer minister and served a wide expanse of early settlers.
Roy attended America City church and school.
He was married to Minnie Taylor, January 17, 1905, in a home wedding officiated by his grandfather.
As a young man of exemplary habits he became a husband and father. All his life was spent believing and living a faith in God and in the scriptures.
Three daughters, Veda Mae and Leah Gale were born to this home and were much loved and carefully reared. The infant daughter who died early was never forgotten.
The family moved to the farm just west of Buck's Grove when the daughters were reaching young womanhood. Roy and Minnie and Leah Gale joined Buck's Grove Church and were a part of its ministry to the community. Roy was superintendent of the Sunday School several years and served where his grandfather was lovingly remembered as the first minister. He had performed many marriages and had comforted many sorrowing pioneers.
The Roy Channel home was a model of industry and order. Love for family, home and neighbors led to peaceful happiness and simplicity in living.
Roy had a close acquaintance with growing things. He grew fruit, grain and vegetables.
Roy and his wife moved to Havensville in the early ‘50’s. They transferred membership to the Methodist Church. This semi-retirement gave them a bit more leisure to meet friends and to do church work. He loved to attend Havensville Lodge No. 34 AF&AM.
Death claimed Mrs. Channel in 1955 and since that time he has shared his time with his daughter, Veda Mae and Martin. Leah Gale’s death less than a year ago was a great sadness for all the family.
Roy greatly enjoyed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the home that was opened to him. He was given every consideration and loving care. Many friends called to visit with him and he voiced his appreciation for this blessing.
Death at the age of 84 came July 20 th in the Onaga hospital. Survivors are his daughter, Veda Mae and husband Martin; three brothers, Lota Channel, Corning, CA, Clyde Channel, Englewood, CO, and Orville Channel, Wamego; a sister, Mrs. Stella Manuel, Havensville; five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Havensville Methodist Church on July 23 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Melvin Ammon officiated. Organ music was furnished by Miss Juliavina Ellis. Vocal music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Dean Robbins. Pallbearers were grandsons: Max Armstrong, Jimmie Armstrong, Phil Armstrong, Lyle Mumaw, Dick Chrest and Rickie Clements. Bill Coverdale of the Circleville Masonic Lodge conducted graveside services for the Onaga Masonic Lodge. Interment was in the Havensville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Esther M. Channel, 74, of Havensville were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Havensville United Methodist Church with burial in the Havensville Cemetery. Mrs. channel died Saturday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sauvage, a few miles south of Havensville. She had suffered a heart attack April 20 and had been in community hospital at Onaga and also in a Topeka hospital before going to the Suvage home.
The daughter of Otto and Emmilia Teske, she was born January 2, 1904, on a farm near Onaga, and lived her entire life in the Onaga and Havensville communities. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Havensville and the United Methodist Women’s Society of the church. She was formerly a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Duluth.
She was married to Delbert Channel, of the America City community, on March 31, 1926, in Topeka.
Mrs. Channel was preceded in death by her husband on March 1, 1968. Also preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Walter Teske.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Doris McKee of Wetmore and Mrs. Myra Sauvage of Havensville; a brother, Arthur Teske of Onaga; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Mabel Rose Clark, 70, of Kansas City, MO, died Tuesday at a Kansas City hospital. She was a sister of Miss Gladys Brown of Topeka.
Other survivors include her mother, Mrs. W. H. Brown, Delia, KS; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Finn, Wamego; Mrs. Jean Parker, Kansas City, MO; and Mrs. Phyllis Hobbs, St. Louis, MO; one son, Marvin Clark, Paola, and a second sister, Mrs. Charlotte Orsborn, Wamego.
Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, with burial in Fox Cemetery, northwest of Wamego.
Nathaniel L. “Nate” Carl, 78, Colwich, died Thursday, September 29, 1988, at a Colwich nursing home.
Mr. Carl was a construction worker for the Army National Guard at McConnell Air Force Base at Wichita. He was retired. He previously farmed in the Onaga area from 1943 until 1965 and had worked 17 years for Merchants National Bank in Topeka.
He was born September 20, 1910, at Onaga, the son of Earnest C. and Bertha Day Carl.
He was married to Floy Edna Witham December 7, 1930. She died January 7, 1982.
Survivors include two daughters, Marlene Kay Ratcliff, Wichita, and Marcia Rae Dulac, Derby; a son, Charles Lynn Carl, Wooster, Ohio; three sisters, Frances Snyder, Topeka and Mary Rowles and Donna Lee Valburg, Onaga; three brothers, Grayson Carl and Earnest Carl, both of Onaga, and Ralph Carl, in California; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 2, at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Burial was in Onaga Cemetery.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church at Onaga for James P. Cline, Sr., 83, 1514 Willow. He died Monday at a Topeka hospital.
He was born March 2, 1897, in Coal Creek community, Nemaha County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Edward Cline. He had lived at Topeka since 1958.
Mr. Cline was a farmer, stockman and realtor. He was a Catholic.
He was married to Georgia Ticehurst, who survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Lewis, Casper, WY; five sons, James P. Cline, Jr. Carlsbad, CA; John A. Cline, Havensville, Harold F. Cline, Russell, Paul A. Cline, Jacksonville, Ark., and Maurice Cline, Mesa, AZ/ a stepdaughter, Mrs. Patty Lou Chaffee, Salina; three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Corbin, Simi Valley, CA; Mrs. Frances Troutman, Redlands, CA; and Mrs. Mary B. Younge, Kaunakakai, Hawaii; a brother, Gerald Cline, Pascal, WA; 22 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, at the Coal Creek community in Nemaha County. Mr. Cline will lie in state until 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brennan Funeral Home, Topeka, and Thursday afternoon at the Tessendorf Mortuary, Onaga, where a rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
BROTHER DIES THURSDAY IN ROSEBURG, OREGON – Earl Carl, 75, twin brother of E. C. Carl of this city, and know to his friends here as major Carl, died Thursday of last week at Roseburg, Oregon. Funeral services and burial were Saturday at Roseburg.
Mr. Carl had been in ill health for the past six months.
In addition to his brother here, E. C. Carl, he is survived by his wife, Mabel, of the home; two sons, Billy of Honolulu, and Henry of Florida; two daughters, Aurelia and Dorothy also of Roseburg; another brother, Cal, of Council Grove, Kansas; two sisters, Neil of Topeka and Hattie of Santa Ana, CA; and a host of relatives and friends.
Death of Long Time Resident – Mrs. Rosalie Chatelain, one of the oldest residents of this community, passed away Saturday at the age of 89. She has been a resident of this community for over 80 years.
Rosalie Gilson was born on November 8, 1863 at Green Bay, WI, and died at her home in Onaga, on March 7, 1953 at the age of 89 years and four months. She came to Kansas with her parents at the age of eight years, and has resided in this vicinity for the past 81 years. She was one of the early settlers of the Neuchatel community, where one of her grandsons still resides on the old homestead. She has been a faithful member of the Congregational Church until her health failed her in recent years.
In the year 1897 she married Colin Louis Rossier. To this union were born five girls and one boy, two of whom preceded her in death. Mr. Rossier died in 1895.
In 1898 she married Armond Chatelain. To this union three daughters were born. One died in infancy.
Mr. Chatelain died in 1902. One sister, Mrs. Tell Perrelet, and one brother, Mr. Alexander Gilson, have preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her death, six daughters, Mrs. Ephriam Bonjour, Mrs. Phillip Cosandier, Mrs. Arthur Surdez, all of Onaga; Mrs. J. M. Gorman of Emporia; Mrs. Bob Noell of Frankfort, and Miss Alice Chatelaine of the home. Also 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church on Monday afternoon, March 9. The pallbearers were Donald Bonjour, Walter Surdez, Arthur Surdez Jr., John Gorman Jr., Howard Smith and Lloyd Berges, all grandsons.
Memorial services for Mrs. Alice M. Carl, 64, of Santa Maria, CA, will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Tessendorf Funeral Chapel, Onaga. Graveside services will be at 4:00 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. Mrs. Carl died Saturday, May 24, at a Santa Maria hospital.
She was born November 22, 1921 in Topeka, the daughter of Ernest and Cora McPartling. She was graduated from Topeka High School and attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka.
She was married to Earnest E. Carl, July 20, 1947, in Topeka and moved with him to Onaga where they resided until 1965 when they moved to Virginia. They later lived at Lake Tahoe, CA, and then at Santa Maria, CA.
Mrs. Carl was a secretary and in California was active in volunteer work at convalescent hospitals. While in Onaga, she and her husband were active in Boy Scout and 4-H work and other youth activities.
Survivors include her husband, of the home in Santa Maria; two sons, Earnest E. (Chip) Carl Jr., and Kenneth Underwood, Agoura Hills, CA; a sister, Tess Peabody, San Diego, CA; a brother, Ed McPartling, Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Francis Patrtick Cattan, 81, Meriden, died Monday, September 21, 1987, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Cattan worked for Union Pacific Railroad 30 years before he retired.
He was born March 4, 1906, in the Coal Creek community north of Onaga, the son of Henry and Rose Cattan. He lived at Lillis and Onaga before he moved to Meriden in 1985.
He was married to Genevieve Maxine “Jenny” Founds June 26, 1934, at Seneca. She died February 18, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Theodosia Markham, Meriden; a sister, Mrs. Angeline Book, Earling, Iowa; two brothers, Joseph Cattan, Leavenworth, and Peter Cattan, Veteran, WY; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Burial will be in Wheaton Congregational Cemetery at Wheaton.
Mr. Cattan will lie in state from 4 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Relatives and friends later will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Mrs. Genevieve Maxine “Jenny Cattan, 71, Meriden, died Tuesday, February 18, at a Topeka hospital. She was a former Onaga resident.
She was born August 6, 1914 on a farm near Lillis, a daughter of Joseph W. and Ida L. Garrett Founds.
She is survived by her husband, Francis Cattan, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Theodosia Markham, Meriden; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Goodman, Topeka, and Mrs. Florence Goodman, Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga with burial in the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery. Mrs. Cattan wil lie in state from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and prior to the services Friday at the funeral home.
ONAGA – Harold F. Carlson, 81, Onaga, died Wednesday, March 4 at an Onaga hospital.
Mr. Carlson worked for Woods Drug Store in Onaga 30 years before he retired in 1972.
He was born July 2, 1905, at Cleburne, the son of Ernest and Bertha Wilburn Carlson. He was graduated from Irving schools.
Mr. Carlson was a member of the former Swedish Lutheran Church in the Mariadahl community in the Blue Valley near Cleburne.
He was married to Helen Deveny of Onaga June 1, 1931, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Billie Smith, Wichita; and two granddaughters.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Onaga Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday at Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Congregational Church at Onaga.
