BRUNKOW, WILLIAM F. (1914)

William F. Brunkow was born March 11, 1831, in Doelitz, in Pommerania, Germany. Here he grew to manhood and on June 11, 1857, was joined in holy wedlock to Karoline Zabel.

In 1869 they set out to find a new home in America. The trip across the ocean, which is now made in a week, lasted five weeks. Upon their arrival in New York they immediately set out for the west, coming to Centralia, Kansas by rail. From here they drove to Neuchatel, where they took up a homestead of 80 acres near what is Duluth. This land cost them fifteen dollars, a small sum considering the present value of land. But there were absolutely no improvements on it, such as a house, etc., net even fences. The land had to be broken and buildings erected. But with God’s blessing and hard work all this was accomplished. Only those pioneers who have helped to develop this country can really appreciate the improvements to which we as the younger generation are already accustomed.

The farm products such as wheat, corn, etc., were hauled to Wamego at that time the nearest town. They could not follow the roads for there were none. Only perhaps the trail of other wagons which had passed there before them.

Little did Mr. Brunkow dream at that time that later on there could be a railroad build passing only a few rods from his home.

But these early settlers did not in all their earthly toils forget that they were only Pilgrims on this earth and that their real home was in heaven.

Shortly after Mr. Brunkow’s arrival he and eight other neighbors, who have already all passed away before him, founded the Lutheran congregation. For a few years services were held in their houses, until in 1876 they erected a small stone building which is now used as the parochial school.

Although it was a humble beginning they rejoiced for they now had a place of worship. And the Lord blessed their work to such an extent, that in a few years this building proved inadequate, so that a larger and more modern church building was erected.

The deceased had passed the Scriptural mark of three score and ten. At the time of his death, which occurred Saturday, February 21, he was 82 years, 11 months and 10 days of age. He leaves an aged widow and the following ten children to mourn his death: August Brunkow, of Middletown, Wisconsin; William Brunkow of Duluth, Kansas; Mrs. Aug. Kolterman of Onaga; Herman Brunkow of Lake Mills, Wisconsin; Ferdinand Brunkow of Onaga; Mrs. Herm. Honig, of Wheaton; Albert Brunkow of Wheaton; Mrs. H. F. Teske of Duluth, Frank Brunkow, of Duluth, Mrs. Wm. Honig of Onaga. One daughter died in infancy. The sons from Wisconsin had come about two weeks prior to the death of their father.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. G. Degner at the Lutheran St. Paul’s church. Despite the deep snow the church was crowded. The six sons acted as pallbearers. Interment was made at the Lutheran Cemetery at Duluth.

Ellen Annetta Hicks was born in Ohio, July 6, 1844, and died at her home southwest of Onaga, October 30, 1916. She was married to F. A. Brown, December 24, 1866. To this union were born three children, F. M. Brown, Miss Ruby Brown, now living and Mrs. Pearl Hardy who died sixteen years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved to Kansas in 1869 and settled on the present homestead, living there continuously ever since. Coming to the state in its early history they have seen it grow from a frontier prairie to the present settled country of splendid homes. They have seen others come and go, and as Mr. Brown said to the writer, only three of the people who were here then remain in the township at present.

Mrs. Brown has been in poor health for several years, never having fully recovered from the shock caused by the death of her daughter. She never complained and few were aware of her condition until quite recently. On the evening of her death, she was able to be about the house, but complained of not feeling as well as usual, but nothing serious was thought of, until while resting she was found to be unconscious, and passed away immediately.

Mrs. Brown united with the Christian church in early life and lived trusting in Jesus all her life. She was a kind and living wife and mother, a good neighbor and true friend. She often spoke of her hope to be able to observe with her husband their fiftieth wedding anniversary, which would have occurred December 24 th.

The funeral was held at her late home Wednesday, November 1, at 10 o’clock a.m. conducted by Rev. Jas. P. Blackledge, of the Baptist church. Mr. Geo. Grim sang, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere”. Many beautiful flowers attested to the regard of friends and loved ones. Burial was in the Onaga Cemetery, where in company of many who have gone before she awaits the call to come forth at last at the final resurrection.

BROWN, DANIEL EPHRIAM (NO DATE)

Again the Herald is called upon to chronicle the demise of one of Onaga’s oldest and highly respected citizens, Dan E. Brown, who passed away peacefully, at his home in this city last Thursday morning, after a lingering illness.

Daniel Ephriam Brown was born at Saranac, New York, July 27, 1858. At the age of 21 years he came to Atchison, Kansas with his parents, and later moved to Onaga, where he was engaged in the barber business for a good many years, and where he has since made his home. On April 12, 1905, he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Shaffer, who is left to mourn her loss.

Dan, as he is known to everyone far and near, has a host of friends who will miss his cordial welcome and hearty handclasp. He united with the Congregational Church of this city in 1916, and was interested in all its activities until failing health confined him to his home. He served twice on the Board of Trustees and faithful in discharging his duties of his office. Early in his church life he saw the need of an usher. He took upon himself this work and for almost eight years he met the people at the door, and his kindly, courteous attention gave strangers the assurance of their welcome to the services of the church.

He was a member of the AF&AM lodge of Onaga, and also of the Abdallah Shrine, of Leavenworth.

About sixteen months ago he underwent a serious operation from which he never fully recovered. During his long stay at the hospital his nephew, Bert Brice, of Topeka, devoted all his spare moments from his work at his bedside, which was a great comfort to both. During the last ten days of his sickness, his wife, with the aid of his niece, Mrs. Juna Fluke, and nephew, Dan Canfield, of Kansas City, mo., stood ready to help him in his suffering. During the night he offered a prayer for those left behind, which showed he was clinging to his faith. About one hour before he was called he again offered a beautiful prayer, but during all his sickness his first thoughts were of his loving and devoted wife, who never faltered or failed him in his sufferings, and who, at the last moments, held his hand as he passed on to his heavenly home.

Those left to mourn his demise are his wife, one sister, Ella Tryon, of Burlington, N. J. several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held at the Congregational Church, Sunday afternoon with Rev. J. W. Cone, assisted by Rev. VanSickle, in charge. The pastor paid a fine tribute to the friendly qualities of Mr. Brown, and to his great interest in the church. Consoling words were spoken based on the text: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” The singing was rendered by Mr. and Mrs. C. Haughawout. Mrs. Dinwiddie, and Mr. Sam Eustis, with Miss Ruth Haughawout, pianist. Mr. Haughawout sang “Face to Face” and Mrs. Dinwiddie sang “In the Garden”, in response to the request of Mrs. Brown. Mr. J. W. Dunn gave the Masonic lecture at the Onaga cemetery, and the masons attended in a body to pay their respects through the beautiful ritual of the order.

The following out of town relatives and friends were present at the services: Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Grice, Mrs. Mildred Buck, Mrs. Will Fluke, Mrs. Robt. McGregor, Mr. Floyd Brown and Mr. Carl Canfield, all of Topeka, Kansas; Mr. Dan Canfield and Mrs. Maude Morrison, of Kansas City, Mo; Mrs. Lillie Campbell, of Hanover, Kansas; Mrs. Juna Fluke, Mrs. Elsie Wrakestraw, Mr. Allie Brown and Mr. Charlie Brown, of Junction City, Kansas.

BROWN, ZELDA SHERMAN (NO DATE)

Zelda Sherman was born at Cedar Falls, Iowa, on March 11, 1868, and passed from this life on October 11, 1930, at the age of 62 years and six months. She came with her parents to Pottawatomie County, Kansas, when three years old, settling in the Arispie neighborhood. Here she grew to womanhood, and on March 9, 1886, she was married to Dolph Brown. This union was blessed with two children, Mrs. Zetta Guffy, of Onaga, and a son, Hiram, who died in 1923. Mr. Brown passed to his reward in 1916. She is survived by the one daughter, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Blanche Myers, of Onaga, and Mrs. Florence Alsip, of Wamego. Two sisters have gone on before.

Mrs. Brown was one of the type of women whose all was bound up in her home. She loved her home and devoted almost all her interests to it. She built into it her ideals and those of her Master. She made confession of her faith in Christ and united with the Christian Church at White Eagle, near Westmoreland, in 1888, and never changed her church relationship. Since coming to Onaga nineteen years ago, her religious activities have found expression through the Congregational church. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge.

Thoughtful of others and often self-sacrificing in their behalf, she has won a place in all hearts. In recent months she has not been well, but she has been sustained by an unfaltering trust in God that led her to face the end confidently, even in the face of great physical suffering.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Horton at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, October 12. There was a good representation of former friends and neighbors from the Arispie neighborhood, several of whom acted as pallbearers. The Rebekahs attended as a group. Interment was in the Onaga cemetery.
