Ollises Mentioned in the Switzerland Data Files


 

I have just returned from an all day visit to a LDS Research Facility.

In reference to my communications with the Australian Ollises, I searched the Switzerland Catalog and found the following, which I thought interesting.

CONTENTS: Christian Ruffner (l801-ca.1880) married Cordula Faller in 1828 and in 1846 they immigrated from Switzerland to Wartburg, Tennessee, later moving no Coalfield, Tennessee. Descendants lived in Tennessee and elsewhere. Includes some ancestors in Switzerland and many of their descendants. Includes Caldwell, Campbell, Cross, Hensley, McCartt, Ollis and....

2. Roberts Pauline H. Ruffner families of Maienfeld, Switzerland, and Morgan County Tennessee

CONTENTS: Christian Ruffnar, Jr. was born in 1807 in Maienfeld, Switzerland. His parents were Christian Ruffner and Anna Just. He married Cordula Faller in 1828. They had five children. They imigrated to America in 1846 Morgan County Tennessee. Traces the descendants of each of the their four sons, Christian, Peter, Michael and John. Descendants and....Includes Barwick. Calvin, Dagley, Hensley, Ollis and related families.

The son of Pauline H. Roberts, who wrote the book on the Switzerland & Morgan Co. TN book happened upon of Web Pages and provide the following information. Thank you Pat.

Here is information on Ruffner book. This book is out of print. should be available in local libraries, but not too many other places out of the general area.

*Ruffner Families of Maienfeld, Switzerland & Morgan Co. TN* by Pauline H. Roberts, 1981 (It doesn't say publisher, so I guess she did it privately)

There is an Overview, written by her husband, Snyder Roberts, who was a long-time local researcher, writer, educator. The book is about a family that came to America in 1846 from Switzerland. It consists mostly of family group sheets, and copies of the naturalization papers, etc. for Ruffner family, Civil War pensions, etc. There are also many pages of the correspondence between Pauline Roberts and Peter H. Ruffner, of Switzerland

As to the OLLIS family, as I said, they just appear on Family sheets:

1. Christian Ruffner b 1773, Christian Ruffner b 1807, Christian A. Ruffner b 1834, William Christian Ruffner b 1861 ancestors of:

Bertha Reba Ruffner b 5-5-1902 who married Jeffie Lee Ollis b 3-17-1894.

Their children (oldest born 1918, but i don't have ages of youngest ones), were:

Lenis W. & Italy Mae Picca
Otha Reece & Dolema Russel
Georgia Mae & Calvin Campbell
Nanna Margaret & Robert Campbell
Charles Glen b 1934 & Reba Ward, Joan Liles [Reba was a classmate of mine]
Mitchell Benton & Elaina Miller
Mildred Ann b 1939 & Woody Joe Duncan

I daresay some, or all, of these folks are still living--quite possibly in Oliver Springs or Oak Ridge area. I do not spend enough time there anymore to know personally.

I have no idea the ancestry of Jeffie Lee Ollis, but I would bet somebody in the area knows.
