On December 4, 1917, the body of Pvt. Harry R. Buchanan, first veteran to be returned
to Avery County from an overseas cemetery, was buried with full military honors at Yellow
Mountain cemetery, between Plumtree and Spear. Before removal, he had been buried in the
Henri Chappelle cemetery in Belgium. He had enlisted in the Army on June 30, 1944, served
with the 310th Infantry, 78th Division, and was killed at Schmedt, Germany on February 14,
1945.
Major Thomas W. Ferebee The man who, on August 5, 1945, dropped the atomic bomb on
Hiroshima, Major Thomas W. Ferebee, son of W. F. Ferebee, of Mocksville, North Carolina,
after graduating from Mocksville High School, entered Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, on
September 17, 1938, and graduated there on June 3, 1940. He ranked only 65th in a class of
82. He took a Liberal Arts Course which included 104 Bible, 114 Chemistry, 113 Economics,
103 English, 115B Hygiene and 102 Physical Education. In his senior year at Lees-McRae,
which is a junior college, he had 204 Bible, 203 English, 128 French, 106 History, 105
Mathematics and 202 Physical Education.
