JOSEPH STITH OF VIRGINIA

Patriot Great-uncle

Joseph Stith was born 6 September 1759, the eldest son of my ancestor Richard Stith.

At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Joseph enlisted for continental service under Captain Harvey Terrell of Bedford County, as part of Colonel Josiah Parker's 5th Virginia Regiment. Unfortunately, he soon fell ill, and had to return home. But, he did furnish a substite named James Weaver.

Upon recovery of his health, Joseph volunteered in the militia company of Captain John H. Holt and was assigned to Colonel Stubblefield's Regiment.

Finally, he served as an Ensign under Captain David Beard. They participated in the Siege of Yorktown, and were present when Lord Cornwallis surrendered the British Army to George Washington.

After the war, Joseph married 8 September 1782 to Nancy Cocke of Campbell County, Virginia. They settled in Meade County, Kentucky, where he applied for a pension based on his service 24 September 1832. He died there in 1837.

I descend from Joseph's younger sister Katherine Stith as follows:

Katherine Stith > Agnes Walker Jones > Martha Virginia Brown > William Swinney Morgan > WSM Jr. > WSM III > WSM IV > WSM V.
