WILLIAM MORGAN OF VIRGINIA

Patriot Great-uncle

William Morgan was born about 1757, a son of my ancestor Thomas Morgan.

During the Summer of 1776, William enlisted in a militia company in Cumberland County, Virginia, under Captain Robert Hughes and Lieutenant Edward Munford, and marched to Richmond, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. At the latter place, they were attached to Colonel Mason's regiment of regular troops. They were discharged after two months' service.

In 1777 or 1778, William was drafted into the militia of Powhatan County, Militia, by Colonel Mosby, and served as Sergeant-of-the-Guard in charge of about 200 British POW's being held at the old Cumberland Courthouse. He was discharged after two months' service.

In April 1780, William joined a troop of cavalry in Powhatan County under Captain Littleberry Mosby. They rode to Richmond, Williamsburg, Bottom's Bridge on the Chickahominy River, and Petersburg. At the last place, they were joined by cavalrymen from Dinwiddie County and placed under the command of Baron von Steuben. He led them in an engagement against the British, driving them downriver. He was discharged at Richmond after serving two months.

Finally, in February 1781, William joined a rifle company in Prince Edward County, Virginia, under Captain Andrew Baker, Lieutenant Parks, and Ensign Read. They joined General Nathanael Greene's corps at the Dan River. After about a month there, he returned to Prince Edward to obtain provisions from the local commissary. He rejoined his unit and accompanied them on a march to Ramsey's Mill on the Deep River in North Carolina. They were later marched back north to Halifax County, Virginia, where they were discharged by General Robert Lawson.

After the Revolution, William settled in St. Patrick's Parish in Prince Edward County. He filed a pension application there based on his war service on 17 September 1832. He never married and had no children.

I descend from William's younger brother Terrell Morgan as follows:

Terrell Morgan > Richard Morgan > James Lorenzo Morgan > William Swinney Morgan > WSM Jr. > WSM III > WSM IV > WSM V.
