Patriot Ancestor

John Cox was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1753. But, by the time of the American Revolution, he was living in Nash County, North Carolina. He married there to Elizabeth Portis.

He was drafted 5 December 1778 to serve in Captain Edward Clinch's company, Colonel Joseph Clinch's regiment, General Ashe's brigade. They were defeated at the Battle of Briar Creek. He received his discharge from this tour of duty in South Carolina in May 1780.

John was again drafted in January 1781 to serve in Captain Benjamin Evans' company, Colonel Eaton's regiment, General Eaton's brigade. They fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina in March 1781, and were discharged soon thereafter.

After the war, he settled in Anson County, North Carolina, where he applied for a federal pension based on his Revolutionary War service on 28 September 1832.
