ASHER APPLEGATE OF NEW JERSEY
Patriot Ancestor
Asher Applegate was born 13 March 1762 in East Windsor, New Jersey, son of Henry Applegate and the former Leah Wilson.
He married in East Windsor, 30 March 1786, to Miss Sarah Higbee, daughter of Obadiah Higbee and the former Anna May Brower.
Before their marriage, Asher served with the New Jersey militia in the American Revolution. His company commanders included captains Jonathan Combs, Nixon, John Dey, and John Piatt.
Under Captain Combs, his principal duty was "guarding the Hun," around Amboy, New Jersey. This apparently refers to captured Hessian mercenaries who had been employed by the British.
Under Captain Nixon, he was engaged in scouting the district around New Brunswick as far as Amboy.
The highlight of his service in the Revolution was at the Battle of Monmouth under George Washington.
Asher also served in the War of 1812, being stationed at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
When his father died suddenly in 1799, Asher served as administrator of his estate and inherited a lot of land around Hightstown.
Asher remained in East Windsor his entire life and was awarded a pension 4 March 1831 for his service during the Revolution. He died 2 March 1834, at the age of seventy-one. His widow Sarah died there 19 December 1855. I descend from their son Obadiah Higbee Applegate as follows:
Asher Applegate > Obadiah Higbee Applegate > Mary Vanderveer Applegate > James Applegate Jackson > Ann Jackson > William John Gleeson > Leigh Anne Gleeson > WSM V.
